They address endpoint security, but they are not proven to be the three most effective products—and the available evidence does not support a reliable seven-tool ranking. “AI threat detection” can also mean managed monitoring, security analytics across business systems, or protection for AI applications, which are different jobs from protecting employee laptops.
What does AI threat detection mean for a small business?
The label covers several kinds of security work. An endpoint product protects devices such as employee computers; endpoint detection and response (EDR) adds tools to investigate suspicious activity and take action. A managed detection and response (MDR) service adds outside monitoring and response. A security information and event management (SIEM) platform analyzes security data from multiple sources. Security for AI assets, meanwhile, focuses on AI applications, agents, and their infrastructure—not ordinary endpoint antivirus.
These categories can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable. Choose based on the asset or workload you need to protect and who will handle alerts and investigations.
Three endpoint products to evaluate
Microsoft Defender for Business
Microsoft describes Defender for Business as an endpoint security product for small and medium-sized businesses, including organizations with up to 300 users. Microsoft lists next-generation protection, attack-surface reduction, EDR, and automated investigation and remediation. It is available as a standalone product for eligible organizations and is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium; check your eligibility and existing license before comparing costs. See Microsoft’s product overview, purchase and availability information, and its frequently asked questions.
#1 Best Overall
This is a natural candidate if your business already uses Microsoft services and wants endpoint detection and automated response in that environment. The documentation establishes the intended audience and listed capabilities; it does not establish that Defender outperforms another vendor.
CrowdStrike Falcon Go
CrowdStrike markets Falcon Go specifically to small businesses, listing AI-powered next-generation antivirus, device control, and mobile-device protection. Its US pricing page lists US$7.99 per device per month or US$59.99 per device per year, and says direct purchases are limited to 100 devices. These are vendor-listed US terms, not a market-wide price comparison; confirm the current price and purchase limit before budgeting.
Rank #2
Check whether the included device coverage and controls match your mix of computers and mobile devices. Do not treat vendor marketing language as independent evidence of detection performance.
Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security
Bitdefender positions GravityZone Business Security for small and medium-sized organizations and describes prevention, detection, and blocking capabilities. Its Business Security product page is the place to verify current scope and packaging. Bitdefender also describes AI-powered security features across its broader business and enterprise platform; do not assume every platform capability is included in this specific product plan.

Managed monitoring and response
If no one at your business can routinely review alerts and coordinate incident response, consider an MDR service rather than assuming endpoint software alone provides staffed monitoring. CrowdStrike markets Falcon Complete Next-Gen MDR for SMBs with expert monitoring and end-to-end threat remediation. This is a service option, not the same product tier as Falcon Go, and the description is vendor positioning—not independent proof of effectiveness. See CrowdStrike’s 2024 Falcon Complete for SMBs brief for its description of the service.
SIEM analytics across security data
Microsoft Sentinel is a SIEM for detection, investigation, response, and proactive threat hunting across data sources. That broader security-operations role is different from buying an endpoint product to protect devices. Microsoft’s Sentinel overview describes its scope; businesses considering it should account for the people and processes needed to operate security analytics.
Rank #4
- SonicWall TZ370 with 1 Year EPSS - TotalSecure (02-SSC-6817) - Designed for growing SMBs that need more throughput and scalability, delivering multi-gigabit firewall performance with best-in-class price to performance.
- Essential Protection Service Suite (EPSS) delivers comprehensive firewall security with Gateway Anti-Virus, Intrusion Prevention, Application Control, Content Filtering, and 24×7 Support with firmware updates. Provides full-spectrum defense against known and emerging threats while simplifying renewals and licensing for small and mid-sized businesses.
- Protects against encrypted malware and intrusions using DPI-SSL inspection, IPS, anti-malware, and Capture ATP sandboxing with RTDMI detection.
- Secure SD-WAN intelligently steers traffic across links to reduce MPLS costs and improve cloud application performance for branch users.
- The SonicWall TotalSecure Trade Up program enables customers with an eligible SonicWall or third-party firewall to upgrade to a new Gen 7 appliance bundled with a protection service suite such as Essential or Advanced. This all-in-one option simplifies purchasing by combining next-generation hardware with active security services, helping organizations modernize defenses and maintain continuous protection in a single package.
Security for AI agents and applications
Businesses deploying AI agents or generative AI applications may also need controls for those assets. Microsoft describes discovery, posture management, detection, blocking, and investigation of AI-specific threats during development and runtime in its Defender security for AI documentation. These controls address AI assets and infrastructure, not a substitute for protecting employee endpoints.
Microsoft also documents a Dynamic Threat Detection Agent that works across Defender and Sentinel environments. Its deployment documentation lists a Security Copilot workspace with capacity as a prerequisite for Security Store agents. Check current availability and licensing before treating it as a practical or generally available small-business option.
How to choose without a misleading “best” ranking
- Define the workload. List the devices needing protection separately from AI applications, cloud infrastructure, or broader security data you want analyzed.
- Check your existing environment and eligibility. For Microsoft Defender for Business, verify your organization qualifies and whether Microsoft 365 Business Premium already includes it. For other products, confirm the plan covers the devices and controls you need.
- Decide who will handle incidents. Compare a product with self-managed alerts against a managed service if your staff cannot monitor and respond consistently.
- Compare full costs and operating effort. Include device counts, license terms, required add-ons, management workload, and any service fees. CrowdStrike’s cited prices are US vendor listings and may change; the cited materials do not provide a consistent cross-vendor cost comparison.
- Validate coverage before purchase. Confirm supported endpoint platforms, mobile coverage, device-control needs, response capabilities, and current plan packaging directly with the vendor.
The available product documentation and marketing establish intended audiences, described features, and a small number of commercial terms. They do not provide a consistent independent head-to-head test of seven SMB tools or comparable detection rates. Treat the three endpoint products above as candidates to evaluate, not a validated ranking.
