A free browser version of Grand Theft Auto V briefly appeared on PlayGTA5.com on October 6, 2026, then the site stopped offering the game within hours. Reports attributed the disappearance to Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, but no official confirmation that either company ordered the removal was reported. The port was described as unofficial, so it should not be treated as an authorized way to play GTA 5.
What happened to the GTA 5 browser port?
Beebom reported that PlayGTA5.com made the full game playable in a web browser for a short time on October 6, 2026. It described story mode and free roam, with keyboard, mouse, controller and mobile touch controls; later, the site displayed a “Thanks for Playing!” message. These are details reported by the outlet, not statements confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Beebom’s report also characterized the project as using roughly 700 MB of assets, but that figure has not been independently established as the game’s size.
GTA BOOM likewise reported that the site was available for a few hours before it disappeared. The reporting supports that the browser experience went offline; it does not establish precisely what happened behind the scenes. GTA BOOM’s report described the project as unofficial.
Did Take-Two or Rockstar shut it down?
Some coverage attributed the removal to Take-Two, but the claim remains unconfirmed. Windows Report explicitly noted that neither Rockstar nor Take-Two had officially confirmed ordering the site’s removal. The safest description is that the site disappeared after reports of the port went live, with the reason not publicly confirmed by either company. Windows Report’s coverage discusses that distinction.

Beebom also described the port as relying on leaked GTA V source code and AI. The reviewed reporting does not independently establish those technical claims, so they should be treated as the outlet’s account rather than verified facts.
What Rockstar’s port policy says—and does not say
Rockstar’s published policy offers context, but it does not prove that the company invoked it against PlayGTA5.com. The policy on posting copyrighted Rockstar Games material, last updated January 10, 2025, says Take-Two generally does not object to certain non-commercial fan uses while reserving the right to remove copyrighted material. Among examples that may lead to a takedown notice, it lists promoting modifications or ports, including:

The statement is from Rockstar Games Customer Support’s copyright policy. It explains the company’s stated policy; it is not confirmation of the cause of this site’s disappearance or a legal ruling about this particular project.

Rockstar separately warns that unauthorized GTA online services violate its software license and may expose developers or hosts to legal risk. That guidance concerns unauthorized multiplayer servers, not this reported browser port, and does not establish consequences for people who visited PlayGTA5.com. Rockstar’s guidance on unauthorized GTA online services is specific to that subject. The reviewed sources do not report that visitors to the browser site were banned or otherwise sanctioned; Rockstar’s separate online suspension policy describes possible account actions for violations of its terms, not actions tied to this event.

PlayGTA5.com stopped offering the game after its brief appearance. No competing browser port is established by the reviewed reporting as both authorized and reliable. Do not assume that a mirror or archived copy is safe, authentic or authorized, and avoid downloading files that claim to provide the removed experience.

If you want to play Grand Theft Auto V, use an official listing for your platform and region. Check the current Rockstar or console/PC storefront listing directly for availability and edition details; these can vary by platform and location. Rockstar’s official GTA V store listing is a starting point.
