They are living sponges growing on a framework left by earlier generations, with sediment accumulating around them.
What are glass sponge reefs?
Glass sponge reefs are mounds built over generations by animals in the class Hexactinellida. Their skeletons contain silica spicules, which give the reefs their glass-like description. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) identifies cloud sponge (Aphrocallistes vastus) and goblet sponge (Heterchone calyx) as reef-building species. New sponges settle on the rigid skeletons of earlier ones; sponge growth and trapped fine sediment gradually build the reef framework and mound. DFO’s overview of British Columbia’s glass sponge reefs explains their composition and distribution.
That framework is not all alive. A reef can include living sponges, the hard skeletons left by dead sponges, and accumulated sediment. The word “reef” describes the structure and habitat, not a colony of coral.
Where are they, and how deep?
DFO lists glass sponge reefs in four British Columbia regions: Hecate Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and Howe Sound. Its overview gives a typical depth range of 90 to 300 metres. These are offshore, deep-water habitats; the cited information does not establish a public viewing site or guarantee that a reef can be seen by visitors.

Why are these reefs unusual?
According to NOAA Ocean Service, living glass sponge reefs were discovered by Canadian scientists off British Columbia’s northern coast in 1987, after reefs of this kind had been thought extinct for about 40 million years. NOAA describes them as the only such reefs known to exist. Those claims refer to NOAA’s account of this particular reef type, not to every kind of sponge habitat. NOAA’s glass sponge fact page provides its history and context.
What lives in and around the reefs?
The complex reef framework provides habitat for fish and invertebrates, while the sponges filter water and contribute to processing carbon, nitrogen, and silica. DFO’s 2019 announcement says Howe Sound reefs support more than 84 species of invertebrates and fish; that figure applies to Howe Sound as described in that announcement, not automatically to every reef in British Columbia. The announcement also describes eight refuges established to protect nine newly discovered Howe Sound reefs. DFO’s 2019 Howe Sound announcement gives those local details. DFO’s open-data description of glass sponge reef functions outlines filtration, sediment trapping, and the reefs’ role in seafloor habitat.

How are the reefs protected?
Bottom-contact fishing can damage the fragile reef framework, so designated marine refuges restrict such activities. DFO’s regulations page for the Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound Glass Sponge Reef Conservation Initiative lists 17 established marine refuges and five additional proposed refuges. Those are initiative-specific counts—not a national total—and proposed refuges should not be treated as established protections. Rules and geographic coverage can differ, so consult the relevant DFO notice or map before assuming a particular refuge has the same restrictions as another. DFO’s initiative regulations page describes the refuge counts and protections.
Reef condition also varies by site. In a technical survey of a Passage Island polygon, researchers found only dead reef habitat within the surveyed area; the report cautions that living sponges may occur beyond the survey boundary and that dead reef structure could allow future recovery. That is a finding about one survey area, not a description of all British Columbia glass sponge reefs. The Passage Island survey report provides the site-specific qualification.
