The day involved two Falcon 9 rockets and one Falcon Heavy, with four boosters landing and Crew-13’s Dragon later docking at the International Space Station.
What were the three SpaceX launches?
| Mission | Rocket and purpose | Launch details | Publicly reported result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew-13 | Falcon 9 and Dragon; NASA crew transport to the International Space Station | 11:10 a.m. EDT, October 1, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida | Four astronauts launched; Dragon docked at the ISS |
| Transporter-18 | Falcon 9; multi-customer rideshare | October 1 from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California | 130 payloads deployed into a polar Sun-synchronous orbit, according to Ars Technica’s October 2 report |
| NROL-97 | Falcon Heavy; National Reconnaissance Office mission | 11:54 p.m. EDT, October 1 (03:54 UTC, October 2), from Kennedy Space Center, Florida | Classified payload; Space.com identified it as the first Falcon Heavy mission for the NRO |
NASA’s Crew-13 announcement names the astronauts as NASA’s Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. NASA described their destination as a science expedition aboard the ISS.
For Transporter-18, SpaceX’s launch listing records an October 1 Falcon 9 mission from SLC-4E. Ars Technica’s October 2 account reports the 130-payload deployment and the overall timing of the launch sequence.
What was the classified Falcon Heavy mission?
NROL-97 was a Falcon Heavy flight for the National Reconnaissance Office, the U.S. government agency responsible for reconnaissance satellites. Space.com’s report on the launch identifies it as the first Falcon Heavy mission for the NRO. The payload is classified, so its design, capabilities, and exact destination are not established in the public details cited here.

How many boosters landed?
Four boosters landed across the three launches, according to Ars Technica’s October 2 report. The Falcon 9 boosters returned to their respective launch sites in Florida and California; Falcon Heavy’s two side boosters landed at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Those recoveries are separate from whether a mission delivered its payload or crew to the intended destination. They are an additional operational outcome: Falcon 9 has a single first-stage booster, while Falcon Heavy uses three first-stage cores, including the two side boosters reported recovered on NROL-97.

Why the sequence matters
The launches packed three different kinds of work into less than 13 hours, the timeframe reported by Ars Technica: transporting astronauts to the ISS, placing a large rideshare batch into orbit, and flying a classified national-security payload. The missions show why a count of launches alone does not describe what happened: the vehicles, payloads, customers, and publicly available mission details differed substantially.
NASA’s Launch Services Program describes Falcon 9 as a two-stage rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX in its LSP InfoBook 2025-2026, dated April 30, 2025. In this three-launch sequence, Falcon 9 served both the crewed flight and the rideshare; Falcon Heavy carried the NRO mission.
