Researchers say the site’s location fits Ptolemy’s coordinates and may match his reference to a river flowing in from the north, but the identification remains a hypothesis—not a confirmed name.
Where the settlement was found
The settlement lies near St. Pantaleon-Erla in Lower Austria, within the Danube frontier landscape between Enns and St. Pantaleon-Erla. An interdisciplinary project investigating about 10 kilometres of the frontier has worked in the area since 2015. Participants named by the University of Innsbruck include Forum Donaulimes, GeoSphere Austria, Research Archaeology, and the archaeological services of Upper and Lower Austria. The University of Innsbruck describes the project and its findings.
The new settlement should not be confused with the unfinished legionary camp at Albing, also in the municipality of St. Pantaleon-Erla. At Albing, researchers identified foundation trenches and substantial foundations for fortifications and a headquarters building; the walls were never raised and the camp was not completed.
What the surveys revealed
Geophysical work mapped a planned settlement covering approximately 25–30 hectares (about 62–74 acres), according to the University of Innsbruck. Its regular street grid, cemeteries along roads leading out of the settlement, and amphitheatre point to an urban centre rather than a small military outpost. ORF reports that the amphitheatre may have held about 8,000 people.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The researchers say the settlement’s scale and planned form are unusual for an auxiliary fort intended for about 500 soldiers. They compare its layout with autonomous Roman towns in Noricum. The combination of streets, cemeteries and an amphitheatre supports an urban interpretation, though these features do not establish what the town was called.
Why researchers think it may be Claudivium
The proposed identification rests chiefly on the site’s location. Researchers say its position corresponds with coordinates given by Ptolemy, and that his description of a river flowing in from the north could refer to the Aist. Those clues make Claudivium a plausible candidate, but they do not amount to confirmation that the mapped settlement is the place Ptolemy named. The University of Innsbruck presents the identification as a possibility.

- Ptolemy’s coordinates: Researchers say they fit the settlement’s location and support the name hypothesis.
- The river clue: The Aist is one possible match for Ptolemy’s description; that identification is also tentative.
- The archaeological plan: Streets, cemeteries and an amphitheatre characterize a substantial settlement, but do not independently prove its ancient name.
- The chronology: Finds help date occupation and abandonment, but likewise do not confirm the name Claudivium.
When it was occupied—and why it may have been left
The University of Innsbruck reports that finds, including coins, indicate occupation from around 80 CE and an apparent end around 180 CE. That timing places the settlement’s abandonment near the transition from Marcus Aurelius to Commodus, but the reported evidence does not show that the city was destroyed in battle or fully explain why its inhabitants left.
The research team suggests that a change in Danube frontier strategy after the Marcomannic Wars may have led Rome to leave this settlement while retaining the legionary base at Lauriacum. This is a proposed explanation, not established causation. The university account outlines the proposed strategic context.

What is known about the site today
ORF reports that the land is currently used for agriculture and says further research and heritage support may be needed to protect important parts of the site. Its report does not establish that the settlement is open to visitors, so the discovery should not be taken as evidence of publicly accessible ruins. ORF’s report covers the site’s current agricultural use and protection concerns.
The discovery has drawn attention to how much archaeological evidence can remain underground. Rebecca Jones of National Museums Scotland, co-chair of the International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies, said the survey “and demonstrates what huge scientific potential still lies in the ground,” in a fragment quoted by Smithsonian Magazine.
