Astronomers have identified evidence for a possible planet formed from material its star expelled late in life. The candidate, associated with the hot white dwarf HS 0209+0832, is inferred from an unusual mix of elements in material falling onto the star and a repeating signal in observations from NASA’s TESS mission. It has not been directly imaged, and the signal has more than one possible explanation.

What does “second-generation planet” mean?

Most planets are thought to form from the disc of gas and dust surrounding a young star. A second-generation planet would form later, from material the star expelled during a subsequent giant phase, after its original main-sequence lifetime. In the case of HS 0209+0832, the proposed sequence is that expelled material formed a disc and a planet formed from that disc. The study also considers whether an existing planet could instead have acquired a second-generation atmosphere. These are possible histories, not events directly observed in this system.

The distinction is both about timing and ingredients. The proposed planet-forming material came from stellar ejecta, rather than from the original planetary system. Its measured chemistry is also unlike familiar rocky Solar System material: it is rich in carbon and certain heavy elements made through slow neutron capture, or the s-process.

What did the observations show?

An unusually young, hot white dwarf

HS 0209+0832 has an effective temperature of 35,800 ± 500 kelvin and an estimated cooling age of about 5 million years, according to the study published in Nature Astronomy on 5 October 2026. Ultraviolet spectra show helium and metals in its atmosphere. Because a white dwarf’s atmosphere should not retain these heavier elements for long, the authors interpret their presence as evidence that material is currently being accreted.

A chemical mix unlike familiar planetary debris

By reanalysing ultraviolet spectra, the team identified copper and niobium lines that had not been identified in earlier work. The analysis reports five Nb III lines and 57 Nb IV lines, measures abundances for nine metals, and sets upper limits for 15 more. The resulting pattern includes abundant carbon and strong enrichment of trans-iron elements—elements heavier than iron—including zinc, copper and especially niobium. Silicon is only present at trace levels, and iron was not detected.

One striking comparison is the nickel-to-iron ratio in the accreting material: greater than 2.09, versus about 0.05 in CI chondrites and bulk Earth. The comparison supports the authors’ conclusion that this material does not resemble known Solar System rocky bodies. They point particularly to the carbon and s-process enrichment as clues to a possible origin in stellar ejecta.

What does TESS add to the planet case?

The authors report a sinusoidal signal in TESS photometry with a period of 4.399 ± 0.026 days and an amplitude of 0.120% ± 0.018%. They suggest two possible explanations: changing thermal emission as a planet’s day and night sides rotate into view, or a transiting cometary tail produced by an evaporating giant-planet candidate.

The signal is consistent with a close-in companion, but it does not by itself establish that a planet is responsible. The chemistry and the photometric variation are different kinds of evidence: the abundance pattern supports the proposed second-generation origin of the accreted material, while the periodic signal is suggestive of a companion and remains open to more than one interpretation. The paper estimates that atmospheric escape could provide more material than the white dwarf’s measured accretion rate, while noting that much of the escaping material may never reach the star.

How strong is the evidence—and what remains uncertain?

The planet is a candidate, not a directly photographed or conclusively confirmed world. The evidence comes from atmospheric pollution and a periodic brightness variation. The observations do not reveal the proposed planet-forming disc or directly record a planet forming from stellar ejecta.

To infer the accreted material’s composition, the authors modelled the white dwarf’s atmosphere and considered processes including radiative levitation and element diffusion, which affect how elements appear in the atmosphere. The analysis draws on archival Hubble/STIS, FUSE and VLT/UVES spectra, Pan-STARRS photometry and Gaia parallax; TESS data provide the periodic signal. The authors also discuss uncertainties in formation timescales, accretion and atmospheric physics.

The result makes second-generation planet formation a plausible possibility around stellar remnants, but a single candidate cannot show how often it happens. The discovery is best read as evidence for an unusual accretion event with a compelling planet-formation interpretation—not as a settled account of the system’s history.
