To connect Bluehost AI Credits to n8n, create an AI Credits API key in the Bluehost Portal, then add it to the credential for an n8n AI provider with the base URL https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com. Bluehost’s documented setup is for n8n installed on a Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or VDS and configures each provider separately.

Before you start

Bluehost says AI Credits is available only with Self-Managed VPS and VDS plans. Its n8n guide assumes n8n is installed and you have completed its first login, and that you have purchased AI Credits. See Bluehost’s AI Credits overview and its n8n connection guide.

  • An n8n instance running on a Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or VDS.
  • A purchased AI Credits balance.
  • An API key created in the Bluehost Portal’s AI Tooling area.

Create a Bluehost AI Credits API key

  1. Sign in to the Bluehost Portal and open the AI Tooling area.
  2. Add AI Credits if you have not already purchased them.
  3. Create an API key and copy it somewhere secure. Bluehost displays the full key only once; if you lose it, create a replacement.

Use the AI Credits key—not a direct key from Anthropic or another model provider. Bluehost’s API key instructions identify the gateway endpoint as https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com/. In the n8n-specific credential setup below, use the base URL exactly as shown there: https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com, without a trailing slash.

Configure a provider credential in n8n

  1. In n8n, open Settings > Chat.
  2. Edit the provider you want to configure and create its credential. Bluehost’s example uses Anthropic.
  3. Enter the Bluehost AI Credits API key in the provider credential.
  4. Set the base URL to https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com.
  5. Save the credential and confirm the provider configuration.

Repeat the setup for each provider you want to use through AI Credits. In Bluehost’s documented example, calls are charged to the AI Credits balance rather than a separate account with the model provider. The available credential fields can vary with n8n version, so follow the corresponding fields in the installed version’s interface.

Choose a compatible provider and model

Bluehost describes gateway access to Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and model groups including Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Kimi, GLM, and MiniMax. That does not establish that every model supports every n8n operation. Check that the particular model supports the request type your workflow uses. Bluehost points to its AI Models and Credit Pricing resource for exact model identifiers and token costs; those details can change, so check the current information in the portal rather than relying on an assumed model ID or rate.

Bluehost also describes an OpenAI-compatible gateway credential as an alternative to configuring native provider credentials. The approaches are not established as interchangeable for every model or feature. Compare provider-specific functionality, the credentials you need to manage, and the request type your workflow sends; use the current n8n interface and Bluehost’s n8n gateway guidance to determine which configuration fits.

Understand AI Credits pricing and expiration

Bluehost’s AI Credits article, updated September 16, 2026, listed the following pack prices and stated that each credit has a retail value of $0.010. These are dated prices, not a guarantee of current or future pricing; check the AI Tooling tab before purchasing.

Credits Listed price
500 $5.00
1,000 $10.00
5,000 $50.00
10,000 $100.00

According to the same Bluehost article updated September 16, 2026, credits are prepaid, do not auto-renew, and are non-refundable. The balance is valid for 12 months after the most recent purchase; any new purchase resets that period for the entire balance. If credits expire without a later purchase, the balance resets to zero, but API keys and the workspace remain. Model costs vary by token, and usage is tracked per API key.

Troubleshoot connection and workflow errors

  • Authentication or connection error: Check that the credential contains the Bluehost AI Credits key and that the base URL is spelled https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com. For this n8n setup, do not add a trailing slash.
  • The credential fields do not match these steps: n8n’s credential interface can differ by version. Use the fields presented by your installed version and confirm the provider’s current setup instructions.
  • The credential saves, but a workflow request fails: Check whether the selected model supports that request type or feature before assuming the gateway key is incorrect.
  • The key was lost: Bluehost shows the full key only when it is created. Create a replacement in the Bluehost Portal and update the n8n credential.
