To set up the built-in “mouse pad” on a Lenovo laptop, turn on its touchpad in Windows: in Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Touchpad and switch it on. In Windows 10, search for Touchpad settings and confirm the touchpad is on. Lenovo calls this built-in pointing surface a touchpad or trackpad.
Turn on the Lenovo touchpad in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Touchpad.
- Switch Touchpad to On.

Windows 10
- Search Windows for Touchpad settings and open the result.
- Confirm the touchpad is set to On. If available, open Additional Settings for further controls.
Lenovo describes these Windows 10 steps in its ThinkPad touchpad guidance. If you cannot use the touchpad to navigate, press Windows key + I, search for touchpad settings, and use the arrow keys, Tab, Enter, or Space to select and change options, as applicable. Lenovo’s IdeaPad instructions also describe keyboard navigation.
Check the touchpad function key
Some Lenovo laptops have a keyboard key marked with a touchpad icon that toggles the touchpad. The key varies by model; Lenovo gives F6, F8, or an Fn combination as examples on some IdeaPad models, not as universal shortcuts. Check the user guide for your exact laptop. Lenovo notes, “Some keyboards may not have a key for the touchpad.” See its IdeaPad touchpad guidance and Lenovo user guides.

Adjust touchpad behavior
After turning it on, open the same Touchpad settings page to see which controls your laptop supports. On supported Precision Touchpads, Windows may offer tap-to-click, two-finger scrolling and zooming, scroll direction, and three-finger gestures. These controls are not available on every Lenovo touchpad; the options depend on the device and its hardware. Lenovo describes these settings for supported Windows 10 Precision Touchpads in its Precision Touchpad guidance.
If the touchpad stops responding when you connect a mouse, look for Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected and enable it if the option is present. Lenovo includes this check in its IdeaPad troubleshooting guidance.

If the touchpad does not work
- Check the model’s touchpad key. Press its touchpad-icon key or the Fn combination specified in your laptop’s user guide, if one exists.
- Confirm the Windows switch is on. Use Start > Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Touchpad in Windows 11, or search for Touchpad settings in Windows 10.
- Check the mouse-connected option. If a mouse is attached and the setting is available, enable Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.
- Update the model-specific driver. If touchpad controls are missing or greyed out, get the touchpad or mouse driver for your exact Lenovo model from Lenovo Support, or use Lenovo System Update. Lenovo’s IdeaPad instructions also advise checking Device Manager for a warning on the driver and updating it if needed.
- Consult the exact model’s support page or user guide. If the touchpad still does not appear, use Lenovo’s documentation for that laptop rather than assuming a universal BIOS setting or shortcut.
You do not need a separate mouse to set up the touchpad. If you need to navigate while troubleshooting, keyboard controls are an alternative; a USB mouse is optional.
