To connect a phone, computer, or other device, open its WiFi settings, choose your Spectrum home network (SSID), and enter the password shown on the router label. If you’re installing new equipment, first follow the connection steps for your service type—coax or fiber—then activate the equipment using the My Spectrum app or Spectrum’s self-install website.
Connect a device to your existing Spectrum WiFi
- Find the network name (SSID) and password on the label attached to your router. For some eligible equipment, you can also view or change these details through Spectrum account tools. See Spectrum’s instructions for finding or changing your WiFi name and password.
- On your phone, computer, tablet, or streaming device, open WiFi or network settings. Select the matching network name.
- Enter the password exactly as shown, including capitalization and any symbols, then choose Connect or Join.
If you or someone in your household changed the network name or password, use the current credentials rather than the router’s original label. Spectrum’s WiFi 6 router guide says that the default credentials for that equipment are printed on its label; other router generations may have different network arrangements.
Install new Spectrum equipment
The physical setup depends on whether your service uses a coax-connected modem or fiber. Follow the path that matches the equipment and connections in your home; don’t try to connect a fiber installation using the coax-modem sequence.
Coax modem and router
- Connect the coax cable from the wall outlet to the modem, then plug in the modem. Spectrum’s setup guidance says to allow approximately two to five minutes for the modem to come online. This is an estimate for the described setup, not a guaranteed startup time for every model. See Spectrum’s coax self-installation instructions.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s internet port, then plug in the router and let it start. If the supplied Ethernet cable is missing or damaged, you will need a replacement for this modem-to-router connection.
- Wait for the router to finish starting. For the equipment described in Spectrum’s guide, the WiFi light may take up to ten minutes to come on; timing can vary by equipment.
- Join the network using the SSID and password printed on the router label.
- Activate the new service in the My Spectrum app or at Spectrum’s self-install page. Spectrum describes the app as a guided option with installation tips, equipment checklists, and activation instructions; the website is another route.
Spectrum fiber equipment
Fiber wiring differs from the coax setup. Depending on the installation, the router’s Ethernet cable may connect to a Spectrum-branded wall plate or directly to the home’s Optical Network Unit (ONT). Once the router is connected, join the WiFi network using the credentials on its label and activate the router through Spectrum’s self-install site. Follow the equipment-specific directions in Spectrum’s fiber connection guide.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Understand the network name on your router
On the particular Spectrum WiFi 6 router covered by its setup guide, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands share one network name, and the router selects between them automatically. That behavior should not be assumed for every Spectrum router: some previous-generation equipment uses separate names for the two bands. If you see multiple network names, use the credentials and directions for your specific router rather than expecting every model to display one combined SSID. Spectrum’s WiFi 6 setup guide describes that router’s behavior.
If your device won’t connect
Work through these checks in order. Spectrum’s WiFi troubleshooting guidance recommends checking credentials and signal, toggling WiFi, and restarting equipment.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Check the network and password. Confirm that you selected your home SSID, not a nearby network with a similar name, and re-enter the current password carefully. Find the credentials on the router label or use Spectrum’s name-and-password instructions for account options.
- Check WiFi and range. Make sure WiFi is switched on for the device. Move closer to the router and check whether the network appears in the available WiFi list. If it is not listed, try searching manually for the exact network name.
- Refresh the connection. Turn the device’s WiFi off and back on, then restart the device. If it still will not connect, restart the router and try again.
- For a new installation, check the cables and startup lights. Make sure coax and Ethernet connections are firmly seated and that the modem and router have had time to start. The coax guide gives an approximate two-to-five-minute modem startup estimate; Spectrum’s guide for the described router says its WiFi light can take up to ten minutes. These are equipment-specific estimates, not universal guarantees.
- Check equipment-specific instructions. Router steps and indicator lights can differ by model. Spectrum provides equipment manuals for its devices.
Improve router placement
For a better chance of reaching devices around the home, place the router centrally and away from electronics that can interfere with WiFi, such as microwaves, baby monitors, and wireless headsets. Placement advice cannot guarantee the same signal in every room; walls, distance, and the home’s layout also affect reception. See Spectrum’s router setup and placement guidance.
