What you need before you start
- Hermes Agent and Open WebUI installed and running. Bluehost’s integration guide is aimed at users running them on a Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or Virtual Dedicated Server.
- Command-line access to the machine running Hermes, plus administrator access to Open WebUI.
- A Bluehost AI Credits API key and an available credit balance.
- A model ID supported by the Bluehost AI Gateway. Use the exact ID expected by the gateway; the integration guide does not provide a definitive model list.
On Windows, the Bluehost guide notes that a Unix-like environment such as WSL2 may be needed for the command-line steps. For the current requirements and setup assumptions, see Bluehost’s integration guide.
1. Configure Hermes to use Bluehost AI Credits

In a terminal on the machine where Hermes is installed, run:
hermes model -
Choose Custom endpoint and enter these values:
- Base URL:

Hermes can also be configured with provider fallbacks. A fallback may help if the primary provider is rate-limited or its credits run out, but it requires a separately configured provider. The Bluehost connection details and command above are documented in the Bluehost guide.
2. Enable Hermes’s API server
Open the applicable Hermes environment file and add the following settings. Replace the example value with a long, unique secret; do not publish or share it.
API_SERVER_ENABLED=true
API_SERVER_KEY=your-strong-random-secretStart the API server by running:
hermes gatewayKeep this process running while you use Open WebUI. The default API server port documented by Open WebUI is 8642. For an always-on setup, Bluehost suggests running Hermes in a terminal multiplexer or under a system service. If you use multiple Hermes profiles, check which profile is active: profiles have separate environment configuration and may use separate server ports. Hermes describes this as an OpenAI-compatible HTTP endpoint in its API server documentation.

3. Connect Open WebUI to Hermes

In Open WebUI, go to Admin Settings → Connections → OpenAI → Add Connection.

Enter the endpoint and key:
- URL:
http://localhost:8642/v1 - API key: the same secret you set as
API_SERVER_KEY

Choose Verify, then save the connection. Hermes should appear in the model dropdown, commonly as
hermes-agentfor the default profile.
Open WebUI’s official Hermes Agent connection guide documents the same endpoint and key pattern. This OpenAI connection is to Hermes, not directly to the Bluehost AI Gateway: Hermes handles the agent interaction and uses Bluehost upstream for model inference.

Choose the URL for where the services run
The URL must be reachable from the Open WebUI server process, not merely from the browser showing the interface.

For Docker on Linux, host.docker.internal may not resolve by default. Open WebUI documents options including adding a host mapping, using host networking, or connecting to a reachable Docker bridge IP. Optional: configure the connection with Docker Compose
Bluehost’s example Compose configuration sets Open WebUI’s OPENAI_API_BASE_URL to http://host.docker.internal:8642/v1, sets OPENAI_API_KEY to the Hermes API key, adds the host.docker.internal:host-gateway host mapping, and persists /app/backend/data in a volume. Use the exact variable names and values in the Bluehost example for your deployment.

Open WebUI reads these environment variables on first launch. After initial setup, change connection settings in the Admin UI; changing Compose variables alone may not update a saved connection. Resetting the data volume can remove stored Open WebUI data, so do not use that as a routine way to apply a changed key.

Hermes does not appear in the model dropdown
- Confirm that
hermes gatewayis still running. - Check that Open WebUI can reach the host and port where Hermes is listening.
- Make sure the URL ends with
/v1and uses the right hostname for the container or host arrangement. - Check that you are using the intended Hermes profile and its corresponding server port.
Open WebUI reports an authentication error
Compare the saved Open WebUI API key with the current API_SERVER_KEY. If you changed the value in Hermes’s environment file, update the connection saved in Open WebUI as well.
Verify fails, but the connection may still work
Open WebUI’s verification action requests the provider’s /models endpoint with a Bearer token. Some compatible services may not expose that endpoint, so a failed verification alone does not establish that chat completions will fail. Open WebUI explains this behavior in its connection troubleshooting documentation.

Responses use an unexpected model or credits are being spent unexpectedly
Check the active Hermes profile and provider with hermes doctor and inspect /usage. A different profile can select a different model or provider.
Tool actions happen on the wrong machine
Hermes terminal and file tools execute on the machine hosting Hermes’s API server, not on the computer displaying the Open WebUI browser. If Hermes runs remotely, tool actions take place on that remote host.
The provider stops responding
A depleted AI Credits balance can prevent Bluehost-backed responses. A configured fallback provider may keep requests working, subject to its own credentials and availability.
Understand AI Credits before relying on a balance
Bluehost’s AI Credits help documentation, accessed October 5, 2026, describes credits as prepaid and available for Self-Managed VPS and VDS plans. It lists one credit at $0.010 and packs of 500 for $5, 1,000 for $10, 5,000 for $50, and 10,000 for $100. These are vendor-published figures, not a permanent quote: Bluehost warns prices may change and directs customers to the AI Tooling tab in the Bluehost Portal for current pricing. Model costs vary by model and token use, and one wallet is shared across API keys on the account.
