A Chrome extension can attempt to capture an Instagram voice note as it plays by observing calls to URL.createObjectURL, identifying likely audio blobs, and passing the captured data from the webpage into extension code that can download it. This is a site-specific technique described by the extension’s author—not an official Instagram feature or a method guaranteed to keep working.
How the capture approach works
The implementation described by the author relies on a reported detail of Instagram’s playback: audio is supplied to an <audio> element through a URL created from a Blob. A Blob URL is therefore a possible observation point while playback is active. Instagram can change how it delivers audio, so this should be treated as an implementation-specific hook rather than a stable interface. Chrome’s content-script documentation explains why the approach also needs a bridge between webpage code and extension code.
- Observe object-URL creation. The author patches
URL.createObjectURLin a script running in the page’s MAIN world. The wrapper retains and calls the original function, then checks whether the supplied object might be audio. - Filter candidate blobs. The reported implementation checks MIME type and size before treating a Blob as a voice note. Its configured range is 2,048 bytes through 52,428,800 bytes—50 MiB using binary units. These are the author’s configuration values, not Instagram limits or general standards.
- Relay information to the extension. A separate content script runs in Chrome’s isolated world and relays event data to the extension. The author uses document-level CustomEvents between the MAIN-world script and the isolated-world script.
- Offer a save action. Once the extension associates a captured audio item with the page UI, it can offer a download action and route the data through extension code.
Why the extension needs two JavaScript worlds
Chrome content scripts run in an isolated JavaScript world, separate from the webpage’s own scripts. That isolation helps keep page code and extension code from sharing the same JavaScript environment, but it means a content script cannot simply patch the page’s own URL.createObjectURL function and directly use every extension API. Chrome documents supported communication between content scripts and the rest of an extension, while access to extension APIs from content scripts is limited. The author’s design puts the hook in the MAIN world, where it can observe page-level calls, then hands information to an isolated-world content script through DOM events. That content script can use extension messaging to reach extension components. Chrome’s Extensions API reference documents available APIs; which APIs can be used depends on the extension’s manifest and Chrome version.

Identifying the right audio and matching it to a chat bubble
Not every Blob passed to URL.createObjectURL is necessarily a voice note. The author’s implementation filters on MIME type and size, then uses a temporary Audio element to request duration metadata. After inspecting metadata, it removes the temporary element’s source and calls load() as cleanup. These are implementation choices reported by the author, not universally required steps for every extension.
A captured Blob URL alone may not provide a useful control in the chat. The author also describes using a MutationObserver to notice changes in the page and associate captured audio with visible voice-message bubbles. The reported matching method uses arrival order and timing. Because Instagram can re-render parts of its interface, those associations can become stale or mismatched; this approach depends on the current page structure and playback behavior.

What happens when the user saves a note
In the author’s reported flow, clicking save causes the MAIN-world script to fetch the Blob URL and convert the audio to a data URL with FileReader. It passes the resulting data to a background service worker, which invokes Chrome’s Downloads functionality. The save control, side panel, and daily free quota described in the article are features of that author’s extension; they are not built-in Instagram or Chrome features.

Limits and responsible use
- It can break. The technique depends on Instagram’s current client-side playback and page DOM, neither of which is established as a supported extension interface.
- Performance depends on implementation. The author reports that an earlier hashing approach made a busy Reels page hang. That is an account of one implementation, not an independently measured benchmark.
- It does not establish authorization. Capturing a URL or Blob does not grant access to content you could not otherwise access, nor does it establish permission to keep or share someone else’s message.
- Be considerate with other people’s audio. Keep saved messages for personal, authorized use and ask before republishing someone else’s words.
