Neither Contabo nor DigitalOcean is the universal winner. Contabo’s published VPS plans emphasize larger listed CPU, memory, storage, and traffic allowances for a displayed long-term price. DigitalOcean offers more compute families, plan-dependent outbound transfer allowances, and defined billing and overage rules. Choose by matching the plan to your workload and comparing the full cost—not by headline price alone.

Contabo vs DigitalOcean at a glance

Both providers sell unmanaged virtual private servers, but their plan structures differ. Contabo groups VPS offers into Core, Performance, and Storage families, with shared vCPU resources. DigitalOcean offers Basic Droplets and dedicated-CPU families for workloads that need more consistent compute allocation. The listed specifications are vendor descriptions, not independent speed or reliability test results. Contabo VPS documentation and DigitalOcean Droplet pricing describe the current product categories.

Factor Contabo DigitalOcean
Plan structure Core, Performance, and Storage VPS families; shared vCPU resources. Basic, CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, Memory-Optimized, Storage-Optimized, and configurable v5 Droplets.
Published example Cloud VPS 4: $5.28/month on the US pricing page for a 24-month term; 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD, and a 200 Mbit/s port. Contabo US pricing. Basic: $4/month for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD, and 500 GiB transfer; or $48/month for 4 vCPU, 8 GiB RAM, 160 GiB SSD, and 5,000 GiB transfer. DigitalOcean pricing.
CPU allocation Shared vCPU cores across the documented VPS families. Basic is intended for workloads that can tolerate variable CPU; dedicated-CPU families target more consistent compute allocation.
Traffic No default bandwidth cap, subject to fair use and possible throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive use. Plan-dependent outbound transfer pool; excess outbound traffic is listed at $0.01/GiB, and inbound Droplet transfer is free.
Backups and snapshots Snapshots on Core and Performance; Auto Backup is an add-on for those families. Storage VPS does not include snapshots or Auto Backup. Weekly and daily backup options are listed at 20% and 30% of Droplet cost; snapshots are $0.06/GB-month.

The price examples are not a like-for-like comparison: Contabo’s displayed US offer is tied to a 24-month term, while DigitalOcean’s examples have different storage and transfer allowances. Prices, catalogs, and region availability can change; check the provider pages for the exact configuration and terms before ordering.

Which provider costs less for a comparable VPS?

Contabo’s US Cloud VPS 4 example lists 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD, and a 200 Mbit/s port at $5.28 per month on a 24-month term. DigitalOcean’s Basic example with 4 vCPU and 8 GiB RAM is $48 per month and includes 160 GiB SSD and 5,000 GiB transfer. Those figures describe the providers’ published offers, not equivalent service: storage, transfer, CPU allocation, and billing terms differ. DigitalOcean also lists a much smaller Basic Droplet at $4 per month, but that plan has 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, and 10 GiB SSD.

For a meaningful comparison, price the same practical requirements on both sides: usable CPU allocation, memory, storage type and capacity, expected outbound traffic, backups, region, tax and currency, and commitment term. A low starting price is not evidence that the same application will perform or cost the same on each service.

How CPU, storage, and traffic differ

CPU: shared versus dedicated options

Contabo documents shared vCPU resources and fixed RAM. Its Core family uses SSD storage and multiple CPU generations; Performance uses AMD EPYC generations and PCIe Gen 4 NVMe storage; Storage VPS prioritizes capacity. The listed vCPU count is not a count of dedicated physical cores. Contabo’s VPS documentation lists Core tiers from 4–18 vCPU and 8–96 GB RAM, Performance tiers from 4–18 vCPU and 8–96 GB RAM, and Storage VPS tiers from 2–14 vCPU and 4–50 GB RAM.

DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplets suit bursty workloads that can tolerate variable CPU. Its CPU-Optimized and other dedicated-CPU offerings are the more relevant options when a workload needs more consistent compute allocation. This is a difference in plan design, not proof that one provider is faster in a real application.

Storage: capacity and media matter

Compare the actual disk type and capacity against the workload. Contabo offers capacity-oriented Storage VPS SSD plans and Performance NVMe plans; DigitalOcean has Storage-Optimized plans using NVMe. The appropriate choice depends on whether the application is limited by capacity, storage I/O, or another resource. Vendor specifications alone do not establish which will be faster for your workload.

Traffic: fair use versus a pooled allowance

Contabo says there is no default bandwidth cap, but its fair-use policy permits notification and throttling if traffic is exceptionally high or disruptive. Treat “unlimited” as a policy-qualified allowance, not a guarantee of unlimited throughput. DigitalOcean includes a plan-dependent outbound transfer pool, starting at 500 GiB/month in its published Basic table. The pool is shared at team level and does not roll over; excess outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB, while inbound Droplet transfer is free. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation.

Billing, backups, and recovery

DigitalOcean billing behavior

DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing effective January 1, 2026. Its bundled CPU Droplets have a 60-second minimum and a monthly usage cap of 672 hours (28 days); they continue to incur charges while powered off because compute remains reserved. Destroying a Droplet stops its billing. v5 Droplets do not have a monthly usage cap. Check the details for the specific Droplet type in the pricing documentation.

Backup costs and coverage

Contabo documents snapshots retained for 30 days on Core and Performance tiers, and Auto Backup as a paid add-on for those families. Storage VPS does not include snapshots, Auto Backup, or Storage Extension. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% and daily backups at 30% of Droplet cost, along with usage-based backup options; snapshots are $0.06/GB-month. These are provider-listed pricing terms, so verify the current options for the intended plan on DigitalOcean’s pricing page.

A snapshot or provider backup is only one part of recovery planning. Check retention, restore steps, and whether you need a separate copy that remains available if the server or account is inaccessible.

Regions, scaling, and IP changes

Contabo’s documentation lists 11 locations in 9 regions: EU, UK, three US locations, Singapore, Japan, India, and Australia. DigitalOcean lists locations including San Francisco, Richmond, New York, Kansas City, Atlanta, Toronto, Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, Bangalore, Singapore, and Sydney. Check that the specific plan is available in the region nearest your users when ordering; a location list does not guarantee availability for every configuration. Sources: Contabo VPS documentation and DigitalOcean pricing.

Contabo documents in-place upgrades within a VPS family while retaining the IP. A downgrade or family change requires provisioning a new server, manually migrating data, and canceling the original; the IP changes. Moving regions changes both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Contabo also states that nested virtualization is unsupported. Before choosing a plan, consider whether you may need to downsize, switch families, move regions, or retain an address.

DigitalOcean plan and region rules can depend on the specific move. Verify the applicable resize and region behavior for the Droplet you intend to change rather than assuming all changes preserve the same resources or address.

Which provider should you choose?

Choose Contabo Core if…

  • You prioritize large listed resource allocations for the displayed long-term price.
  • Shared vCPU is acceptable for your workload.
  • You can work within its fair-use traffic policy and migration constraints.

Consider Contabo Performance if…

  • You need the listed AMD EPYC and NVMe tier.
  • You accept that its vCPU allocations remain shared rather than dedicated.

Choose DigitalOcean Basic if…

  • Your workload is budget-conscious, bursty, or does not need dedicated CPU allocation.
  • You value a defined plan-level transfer allowance and can estimate team-level outbound use.

Consider a DigitalOcean dedicated-CPU family if…

  • More consistent CPU allocation matters more than minimizing the plan price.
  • You have checked the current plan’s exact specifications, price, and region availability.

What the published information cannot establish

The vendor specifications and pricing cited here do not establish a neutral winner for speed, uptime, or support. No independent apples-to-apples head-to-head benchmark is available in the evidence for this comparison. Treat the listed plan specifications as specifications, not measured results, and test the application in its intended region before committing to a production workload.
