Nodal processing delay is the time a network node, such as a router, spends examining and handling a packet before forwarding it. It is one of four components in the basic nodal-delay model; the other three are queueing, transmission, and propagation delay.

What happens during nodal processing?

As a packet reaches a router or switch, the node may check it for errors, inspect its header, and use its destination information to determine the outgoing link or next hop. The time spent doing that work is processing delay.

Processing is distinct from what happens after the node has decided where to send the packet. If the packet waits for the outgoing link to become available, that is queueing delay, not processing delay.

How it differs from the other network delays

Delay component Where the time is spent What primarily affects it
Nodal processing Inside the node, examining and handling the packet and selecting an outgoing link. The node’s packet-processing work.
Queueing Waiting in a queue at the node before the packet can use the outgoing link. Queue load and link availability.
Transmission Putting all the packet’s bits onto the communication medium. Packet length and transmission rate; the basic calculation is packet length divided by transmission rate.
Propagation The signal traveling along the link from one node to another. Distance and the signal’s propagation speed through the medium.

The basic equation is:

Nodal delay = processing delay + queueing delay + transmission delay + propagation delay.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

This model separates time spent handling a packet at a node from time spent waiting, sending bits, and moving the signal across a link. The University of Minnesota Duluth explains these four components in its overview of network delays and losses.

Is processing delay always negligible?

No fixed processing-delay value applies to every router, switch, packet, or workload. An educational overview may describe processing as usually negligible compared with other delay components, but that is a simplifying generalization, not a guarantee. In networks that apply additional services to packets, service-function processing can also contribute to delay. The IETF’s 2016 Internet-Draft on packet-delay measurement for service-function chains treats nodal and service-function processing as distinct contributors.

For that reason, do not assume processing delay is zero or assign it a universal number. A meaningful value depends on what node and packet handling are included, and on how and where the delay is measured. The reviewed sources establish no named statistic that quantifies nodal processing delay generally.

What does measuring it require?

A measurement needs a defined scope: identify the observation points and specify which interval counts as processing. For service-function chains, the IETF draft describes synchronized measurement agents reporting transmit and receive times to a collector. It discusses measuring one packet or multiple packets over a window. That is a context-specific method in a historical Internet-Draft, not a universal requirement or the definition of processing delay.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

There is also a related but different use of the term in network control. RFC 5814 includes nodal processing among the contributors to GMPLS label-switched path setup delay. That is control-plane setup time, not a direct measurement of how long a node takes to process and forward an individual data packet.
