To take a screenshot on a Samsung Chromebook, press the dedicated screenshot key if your keyboard has one. Otherwise, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, choose Screenshot, then select Full screen, Partial, or Window. The image saves to Downloads by default and is also copied to the clipboard.
Take a screenshot with the keyboard
- Check for a screenshot key. Some Chromebook keyboards have a key marked with a screenshot symbol. Press it to open the capture controls.
- Open Screen Capture if there is no dedicated key. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is on the Chromebook’s top row and is used to display open windows.
- Choose still-image capture. In the toolbar, select Screenshot, not screen recording.
- Select the capture area. Choose Full screen, Partial, or Window. For a partial screenshot, select and drag across the area you want to capture. For a window screenshot, select the window.
Google’s shortcut guidance is written for a standard English US QWERTY keyboard, so key labels or placement may differ on other layouts. If you are using an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative. See Google’s Chromebook keyboard shortcut guidance.
Use the system menu instead
For a mouse-driven route, select the time or system area at the bottom right of the screen, then choose Screen capture. Use the toolbar to select Screenshot and the full-screen, partial, or window option you need. The same toolbar also offers screen recording, which creates a video rather than a still image.
Take a screenshot in tablet mode
On a Chromebook in tablet mode, press Power + Volume down to capture the screen. Google documents this button combination in its guide to using a Chromebook as a tablet.

Find the screenshot and change where it saves
By default, screenshots are saved in the Downloads folder. Google also says captures are automatically copied to the clipboard, so you can paste an image into an app that accepts pasted images. To choose another save location, open Screen Capture settings and select a folder. These file and destination details are covered in Google’s screenshot and screen recording instructions.

Some touchscreen Chromebooks with stylus support offer capture options in the stylus menu, including capturing a region or the full screen. This is device-dependent and is not required for ordinary screenshots. Google notes that Bluetooth styluses cannot be used with Chromebooks and that capacitive styluses may not work well; check its stylus compatibility guidance.

If the shortcut or key does not work
- Look at the key legends. Samsung Chromebook models and keyboard layouts can differ; the available official instructions do not establish one dedicated screenshot-key layout for every model.
- Use the visible control. Open the time/system area and choose Screen capture if the shortcut is unavailable or unclear.
- Check which mode is selected. Choose Screenshot for an image; screen recording captures video.
- On an external keyboard, try the documented fallback. Use Ctrl + Shift + F5 if it lacks the Chromebook Show windows key.
