A lawn tractor or zero-turn can make it easier to mow around trees and flower beds, but the nine candidates below have not been independently tested against one another. The right choice depends on mowable area, terrain, obstacles, access, clipping needs, power source, and local service.
How to choose a mower for a big yard
Measure the grass you actually mow, rather than the total property size. Then check the tightest gate, passage, and storage opening the mower must fit through. A wider deck covers more ground per pass; a narrower one is generally easier to maneuver in confined spaces. Those trade-offs matter as much as the mower’s advertised acreage.
- Open lawn: Compare deck width against your storage and access limits. A deck that cannot pass through a gate or around a narrow section will not help you mow faster.
- Trees and landscaping: Zero-turn steering can help navigate obstacles; lawn tractors can also make it easier to cut around trees and flower beds. Consumer Reports describes both categories as useful for large properties, not as a ranking of these specific models. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide
- Uneven ground: Look for model-specific traction and terrain information. Features such as a differential lock or a stability-oriented frame are not guarantees of safe use on slopes.
- Clippings: Decide whether you need mulching, bagging, or side discharge. Verify whether the bagger or mulch kit is included; compatible accessories may be sold separately.
- Ownership: Check warranty terms for the exact model and use, maintenance requirements, dealer support, and the machine’s storage footprint. Warranty coverage and availability can vary.
Models to compare by fit
This is a shortlist, not a tested ranking. Manufacturer acreage and speed figures below are manufacturer claims or published specifications, not independent performance results. Confirm the current configuration, accessory compatibility, warranty, and local availability before buying.
| Model | What the available information supports | Best reason to compare it |
|---|---|---|
Cub Cadet Ultima Z |
Cub Cadet describes the Ultima Z series as suitable for properties up to 5 acres and highlights zero-turn maneuverability. This is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed capacity. Cub Cadet Ultima Z information | Compare it if you want a residential zero-turn and have obstacles to navigate. Confirm the exact model and deck size; series-level guidance does not establish the capacity of every configuration. |
Craftsman T4400 |
Craftsman markets this 54-inch gas garden tractor for lawns up to 3 acres. The product page cites a fabricated deck and differential lock. The acreage is the manufacturer’s target, not an independent estimate. Craftsman T4400 product page | A tractor-style option to consider if you want the cited traction feature and a wide deck. Check the manufacturer’s terrain guidance for your property. |
Honda ProZision HZ54SXB / HZ60SXB |
Honda describes these 54- and 60-inch battery zero-turn mowers as commercial models and claims up to 15 acres per charge. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent runtime test; results depend on operating conditions. Honda ProZision product information | Compare it if you want a battery-powered commercial mower. Confirm availability, charging arrangements, warranty terms, and whether the claimed coverage suits your conditions. |
Husqvarna TS 375XD |
This riding tractor has a 54-inch fabricated deck and a listed maximum forward speed of 5.5 mph. Husqvarna lists a 54-inch triple bagger and mulch kit as separate accessories. Husqvarna TS 375XD product page | A tractor-style candidate if you want the option to collect clippings or mulch. Verify accessory compatibility and whether the added equipment is worth the extra cost. |
Scag Freedom Z |
Scag positions the Freedom Z for homeowners and professionals, with 48- and 52-inch widths and a listed forward ground speed of 8 mph. The cited information does not establish an acreage capacity. Scag Freedom Z product page | Compare it if you are considering a pro-style zero-turn. Do not treat its positioning or speed figure as proof that it suits a particular lawn size. |
Exmark Radius S-Series / E-Series |
Exmark lists the 2026 S-Series in 48-, 52-, and 60-inch widths, and the E-Series in 48-, 54-, and 60-inch widths. The page lists speeds up to 8 mph and describes Radius as commercial. Exmark Radius product information | Compare exact series and deck configuration rather than treating Radius as one specification. Check the warranty and dealer support for the model you are considering. |
John Deere Z545R |
A manufacturer search-result excerpt lists 48-, 54-, or 60-inch decks and a four-year/500-hour warranty subject to model terms. The full product details were not available for verification. John Deere Z545R product page | Consider it for comparison, but verify the exact deck choices and warranty in current product documentation before relying on the excerpted details. |
John Deere Z530R |
A manufacturer search-result excerpt lists 54- or 60-inch decks and a four-year/500-hour warranty subject to model terms. The full product details were not available for verification. John Deere Z530R product page | Compare it with the Z545R only after confirming current specifications, configuration, and warranty terms from John Deere documentation. |
John Deere X580 |
A manufacturer search-result excerpt lists 48- or 54-inch deck options and positions the tractor for bigger jobs. Detailed product-page information was not available for verification. John Deere X580 product page | A tractor-style candidate to investigate if you prefer that format; verify current specifications and compatibility for any attachments you need. |
Zero-turn or lawn tractor?
Neither type is automatically the better choice for every large property. A zero-turn may save maneuvering around obstacles, while a tractor-style mower may suit buyers who prefer a conventional steering layout or need compatible attachments. Consumer Reports’ guidance supports both categories for large properties; it does not establish which of these named models cuts better.

The Honda ProZision figures provide one manufacturer’s claim for a commercial battery zero-turn, while the Craftsman T4400 is a gas tractor. Do not transfer Honda’s “up to 15 acres per charge” claim to other battery mowers—or assume it will apply unchanged to your own terrain and mowing conditions. Ask the manufacturer or dealer about charging needs, operating conditions, and local service for the exact model.

What to verify before purchase
- Measure the route and storage space. Check gates, narrow passages, and the garage or shed opening against the mower’s overall dimensions, not just its deck width.
- Match the deck to the lawn. Favor coverage on open ground without choosing a deck too wide for your access or tight areas.
- Confirm cutting and collection equipment. Check whether bagging or mulching hardware is included, optional, and compatible with the exact model and deck.
- Read the exact warranty and manual. Confirm coverage limits for your model and intended use, and review the manufacturer’s maintenance and terrain guidance.
- Check local support and availability. Ask an authorized dealer about current configurations, service, parts, and delivery before settling on a model.
