To resize a video, first decide whether you need different pixel dimensions, a different frame shape, or both. For a straightforward offline conversion or downscale, use HandBrake; for timeline editing, use Shotcut; for browser or app-based reframing, consider CapCut or Canva. Upscaling can add pixels to an export, but it cannot restore detail that was never captured.
Resolution and aspect ratio are different
Resolution is the width and height of the exported image in pixels—for example, 1920 × 1080. Aspect ratio describes the frame’s shape, such as landscape 16:9 or vertical 9:16. You can change one without changing the other, or change both.
When fitting landscape footage into a vertical frame, choose how to handle the mismatch: crop the sides, keep the full image with unused space, or fill the extra area with a background treatment. Preview the framing, subject placement, and text safe areas before exporting.
Choose a free tool for the job

Resize or downscale a video in HandBrake
- Open the video in HandBrake and choose a preset suited to the intended destination. Presets can impose resolution or frame-rate limits, so do not assume one preserves the source settings. See HandBrake’s official preset documentation.
- Open the Dimensions or sizing controls and inspect the displayed output dimensions and crop. HandBrake says it tries to detect and crop black bars by default; turn off or adjust cropping if those bars are intentional.
- Choose an appropriate Resolution Limit if you need to cap the output size. With Automatic sizing, HandBrake says it maximizes output size up to the source resolution or the configured limit. Details are in HandBrake’s resizing guide.
- Review the preview and confirm the dimensions, frame rate, and format meet the destination’s requirements. Start the encode and keep the original file.
Set up a timeline edit in Shotcut
Choose Shotcut when resizing is part of a broader edit—such as trimming clips, arranging a timeline, or adjusting the picture—not just a one-off transcode. Set the project or export frame dimensions for the intended output, then inspect how the footage fits that frame. If the target aspect ratio differs, decide whether to crop, fit with space, or use a background. Shotcut describes itself as free, open-source, and cross-platform, with resolution support up to 4K: Shotcut’s official site.

Resize in CapCut or Canva
CapCut
Import the clip, choose the export resolution, and review related options such as quality, frame rate, and format before exporting. For a frame-shape change, select the target aspect ratio and adjust the fit, crop, or background treatment. CapCut’s converter page lists options from 360p through 4K, but available choices vary: CapCut’s resolution converter explains its workflow and notes that interpolation does not give low-resolution footage native high-resolution detail.
As of January 2026, CapCut’s help page says 2K and 4K availability depends on platform, device, and operating system. Web exports depend on browser and device support; desktop and mobile options are device-dependent. The page also notes possible watermark or bitrate limits for free-account 4K exports. Canva
Use Canva when you need to adapt a video canvas for vertical, landscape, or another design format. Choose the target layout, position or crop the footage, review the result, and export. Canva lists support for MP4, MOV, MKV, MPEG, and WEBM on its video-resize page. That page does not establish that every resizing feature is free in every plan or region, so verify access in your account.

Choose output dimensions and quality sensibly
- Start with the destination’s required pixel dimensions and aspect ratio, then match the export to those requirements where possible.
- Downscaling a larger source changes its pixel dimensions; it does not require reframing unless the target shape also differs.
- Upscaling creates more output pixels, not additional captured detail. CapCut’s example notes that a 480p source will not match footage captured natively at 1080p.
- Before export, verify resolution, frame rate, format, and available quality settings. Keep a copy of the original so you can revise the crop or export later.
