Why rotating a leg can leave a visible seam
A leg drawn as one rigid shape and rotated around the hip is simple to animate, but its outline can pull away from the rump or belly as it swings. That gap is especially noticeable where the leg meets the body.
A bone rig gives the limb internal structure so its outline can follow the bones. In the example described by SVG Lab’s cat-walk article, published September 25, 2026, points along a bone follow that bone, while points near a joint blend between neighboring bones. Points above the first joint stay with the body. The author also reports subtly blending the body outline with the upper leg to soften the hip seam. Those are details of that rigging approach, not a guarantee that every SVG renderer or animation system supports the same deformation.
How to keep the paws planted during a walk
Define a paw target in the ground frame instead of animating a leg angle in isolation. During stance, keep the paw’s horizontal position fixed while the body moves over it. Once the paw leaves the ground, lift it, swing it forward in a low arc, and plant it for the next stance. Inverse kinematics (IK) solves the leg’s joint angles to reach each target; a practical rigging example also describes fixed bone lengths and ground-relative foot targets in its Stick Motion documentation, version 1.1.0.

- Set the ground target. Place the paw where it should contact the floor and express that position in ground coordinates, not relative to the moving torso.
- Hold it through stance. Keep the target stationary while the body travels past it, and solve the leg pose to meet the target.
- Animate the swing. Lift the paw after stance, move it forward, and bring it down at the next contact.
- Close the loop. Coordinate body speed with the gait so each paw returns to the same relationship to the body at the start of the cycle. Ease the body into motion, maintain its cruising speed, then slow it before returning to the starting pose.
As SVG Lab author Usman Bashir puts it: “The fix turns the question around. Instead of deciding how far each leg rotates, you decide where each paw is on the ground, and the leg works out how to reach it.”
How to check the gait timing
Plot each paw’s contacts in a separate lane, marking stance and swing intervals. This makes the sequence easier to inspect than a still frame. SVG Lab describes its corrected cat walk as a lateral sequence: a hind paw, the forepaw on the same side, the other hind paw, then that side’s forepaw. It also reports that at least two paws remain on the ground in the walk it describes. Treat those as that article’s gait guidance, not a universal veterinary rule, and check the sequence in your own footfall plot.

How to animate a jump with a readable arc
Break the jump into four phases. The body and legs need not move as rigid pieces, but the timing should make the change from pushing off to flying feel continuous.
1. Crouch
Lower the body and bend the legs to establish anticipation before the jump.

2. Push off
Extend into the takeoff. Match the upward velocity at the end of push-off to the starting velocity of the flight phase; a pause or abrupt speed change at this handoff can read as a hitch.
3. Fly
Under the constant-gravity model described by SVG Lab, the body follows a parabolic path: vertical speed decreases toward the top of the arc and increases again during descent. Let the hind legs trail and tuck, and keep airborne paws above the ground plane until their intended contact.

4. Land
Reach with the front legs, make contact, then compress and settle the body into the landing pose.

These elements can move SVG artwork and change its attributes, but simply sending a group along a path does not provide a deforming bone rig or solve foot-target IK. Those require additional implementation logic. SVG Lab says its example uses a separate animation MCP for the rigged cat and that this tool remains in development; that status was reported in its September 25, 2026 article and may change.
How to validate the walk and jump
Check the animation at intermediate times, not only at its key poses. Sampling at a fixed interval—such as 30 or 60 samples per second—can reveal sliding or contact errors between keyframes.
- Track every paw against the ground, and measure horizontal drift only during stance.
- Count grounded paws at each sample and compare the result with the gait guidance you chose.
- Plot the contact intervals in separate lanes to inspect the intended footfall order.
- Zoom in on the hip and other joints at the most extreme poses, where outline gaps are most likely to appear.
- For a jump, inspect position and velocity continuity at the push-off-to-flight handoff, and verify that airborne paws stay above the floor until contact.
SVG Lab reports a maximum planted-paw drift of 0.04 pixels across its example walk and jump, and says it sampled the near hind paw’s horizontal position 30 times per second. These are the author’s measurements for that animation, not an independently verified benchmark or a general no-slide threshold.
