Most conventional wired headphones use a 3.5 mm plug, but audio connections also include 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) and 2.5 mm plugs. To identify yours, check the plug’s shaft diameter and the device’s port, then check the contact layout: a plug can fit physically while its microphone or controls do not work as expected.

USB-C and Lightning are device ports, not analog headphone-plug diameters. A port-specific adapter may connect a standard 3.5 mm plug to a compatible device, but the adapter and host determine what functions work. USB audio connections involve device behavior defined by USB Audio Device Class specifications; they are not simply a physical change in plug size. Check the official device specification or manual for the audio connection. It may list a 3.5 mm jack, another size, or only USB-C, Lightning, or wireless audio options. Apple’s compatibility guidance is model-specific. Apple Support

Look at the headphone plug and, if its size is unclear, compare the shaft diameter with a ruler or caliper. Do not force a plug into a port.

If you need a microphone, inline controls, or a professional audio interface, check that the device and adapter support the plug’s wiring and those functions.

Choose an adapter by port, size, and function
Match the device’s port to the headphone plug, then confirm contact layout and which features you need. An adapter that changes physical size does not necessarily convert the wiring or make every headset feature work.

Why a plug can fit but still not work properly
Diameter answers whether a plug can physically enter a socket; TS, TRS, and TRRS describe how its contacts are arranged. A TRRS headset may not work correctly with a TRS-only headphone output, even when both use the same 3.5 mm diameter. Depending on the mismatch, listening may work while the microphone or inline controls do not. Check the device’s stated connection requirements and the adapter’s supported functions rather than relying on physical fit alone. Focusrite Apple Logic Pro documentation
What to verify for a model-specific answer
The size and wiring of an unspecified device or headset cannot be determined from the connector standards alone. For a reliable compatibility check, use the device and headphone model numbers and look up the host port, supported plug type, and adapter feature support in their official documentation.
