In a September 18, 2026 test of a US-region SofaBaton X2, the remote and app continued several control and setup tasks after internet access was cut. The hub also maintained one encrypted external connection, measured at about 110 bytes per minute. Because the tester did not decrypt that connection or capture traffic between the phone and hub on the local network, this is a bounded network observation—not a full privacy or security audit.

What the September 2026 test found

Smart Home Perfected’s test, published September 28, 2026, examined a US-region X2 kit on September 18. The X2 pairs a physical remote with a Wi-Fi-connected hub: the remote talks to the hub over its own radio link, while the app connects to the hub over Wi-Fi. The hub uses IR to control equipment and can use emitter cables for devices outside the remote’s line of sight.

The reviewer reports that the hub opened one external TLS connection to an AWS IoT endpoint in Northern California. It also queried pool.ntp.org about hourly, looked up its hostname, and broadcast locally for app discovery. No additional analytics, advertising, CDN, or cloud hosts were reported during the measured session. The TLS traffic was encrypted; the reviewer measured connection traffic but did not inspect its contents.

During button presses, activity execution, syncing, and renaming, the hub’s cloud-connection counters showed no additional command-related traffic. The review describes the connection’s volume as a heartbeat of approximately 110 bytes per minute. That figure is the reviewer’s measurement for this test session, not a replicated or independently verified rate.

Did the SofaBaton X2 work without internet?

In the tested setup, cutting internet access did not stop several core tasks. The reviewer reports controlling a television with both the remote and app, renaming a device, adjusting power behavior, creating and running an activity, syncing the remote, and rebooting the hub.

A separate attempt to add another television reported success in the app, but the reviewer could not verify its IR operation because the television was outside the hub’s IR range. An app success message alone therefore does not establish that a device was actually controlled.

What changes if the hub loses Wi-Fi?

Blocking the hub from Wi-Fi while leaving it powered produced a different result from cutting internet access. The remote continued working through its radio connection to the hub, but the app could not connect and remained on a spinner. The hub indicator changed from green to white.

In other words, the test separated two situations: the hub could still reach the phone locally over Wi-Fi when internet service was cut, but the app could not reach the hub after the hub’s Wi-Fi access itself was blocked.

Does the X2 need an account or internet for setup?

The app required account registration or sign-in to set up and control the hub. Setup screens also showed cloud account access and node association. The reviewer inferred from those screens that first pairing depended on internet, but did not personally repeat first-time setup with internet unavailable.

In follow-up answers reported by Smart Home Perfected on September 21–22, 2026, SofaBaton said offline setup completes with a cloud verification error. The company said cloud backup, voice assistants, and API access remain unavailable until internet access returns. Those details are vendor statements, distinct from the reviewer’s hands-on observations.

The official X2 instruction manual describes setup through the SofaBaton app with account sign-in, Bluetooth enabled, and the phone and hub on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. SofaBaton’s Hub Connectivity FAQ recommends matching subnet and network conditions and warns that guest Wi-Fi or VPN-related configuration can cause setup problems.

What did the app contact, and what was not measured?

The app had its own external network activity, separate from the hub’s egress. The reviewer reports that opening the app triggered connections to third-party services, including repeated attempts to reach Agora servers. After the app was in use and steady, the reviewer observed no external connections during one 20-minute interval; the phone communicated with the hub over the LAN.

The phone and hub were on the same network segment, so their local traffic did not cross the firewall used to measure and log the hub’s external traffic. As the author put it, “The firewall sees traffic that crosses it.” Consequently, the test does not establish everything exchanged between the app and hub.

  • The reviewer did not decrypt or inspect the contents of the hub’s TLS session.
  • The test did not inspect every endpoint on the hub’s local service or capture same-network phone-to-hub traffic at the firewall.
  • It did not verify every added device code against a reachable target, test the Home Assistant integration end to end, or test all Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, dock, and rollback paths.
  • Setup with location or local-network permissions refused was not tested.

The result is therefore an instrumented observation of one defined test session, not a cryptographic assessment, comprehensive security audit, or guarantee about later firmware and app versions.

Home Assistant, local control, and compatibility

SofaBaton told the reviewer that Home Assistant communication uses an MQTT broker configured by the owner and stays on the local network without a cloud round trip. The reviewer observed the hub attempting to reach a local broker but did not run an end-to-end command test. That claim should be treated as a vendor description rather than an independently confirmed integration result.

SofaBaton’s X-series FAQ lists Sonos, Philips Hue, and Roku among supported Wi-Fi-connected devices. Its Roku instructions say mobile control must be enabled in Roku settings. The same FAQ notes device-specific Bluetooth support limits, so compatibility should not be read as support for every Bluetooth device or command.

The manufacturer’s X2 product page describes support for IR, Bluetooth, Home Assistant, local IP control, and customizable activities or macros, and lists an optional IR repeater. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities; the privacy bench did not validate each one.

Versions and test scope

The tested configuration was a US-region kit with hub firmware 8, hub Wi-Fi firmware 1.2.15, remote firmware 7, and SofaBaton iOS app 4.1.5. The app offered updates, which the tester declined, so the results apply to those versions rather than later software.

The reviewer placed the hub behind an OPNsense firewall, logged connections and DNS lookups, and polled packet and byte counters every five seconds. The test covered setup, idle and app-use periods, internet outages, recovery, and a hub Wi-Fi block. Its results describe the observed unit and session, not all regions, firmware versions, network configurations, or future behavior.
