To add a Google Meet link automatically, create or update the Google Calendar event through the Calendar API and include a conferenceData.createRequest with conferenceDataVersion=1. Conference creation is asynchronous: keep the event in a pending state until Google returns a successful conference with a video entry point, then display that join link.
Use the Calendar API to create an event with Meet
For the common scheduling workflow, the Calendar API is the direct integration: your app creates the Calendar event and asks Google to attach a new Meet conference to it. The Google Calendar event creation guide describes event creation and the required event fields.
Choose the target calendar ID and provide valid start and end values. For a timed event, set start.dateTime and end.dateTime; for an all-day event, use start.date and end.date. The signed-in user must have write access to the chosen calendar, and the app must be authorized to edit calendar data. Google’s guide gives https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar as an example edit scope; request the narrowest scope that permits the specific actions your app performs.
Request a new Meet conference
Include a conferenceData.createRequest object in the event and set the conferenceDataVersion request parameter to 1 on the insertion or modification request. The solution type for Google Meet is hangoutsMeet. The Calendar API supports conference-data creation as well as reading, copying, and clearing conference details; see the Calendar API event reference.

Handle conference creation as an asynchronous step
An event may be created before Google finishes generating its conference. The first response can report conference status pending; processing later changes the status to success or failure. A successful result supplies entry points, including the video entry point used for joining. A failure has no entry points. Google documents these states in its Calendar event reference.
- Submit the event with conference data requested and
conferenceDataVersion=1. - Inspect the returned conference status. If it is
pending, show the event as awaiting a meeting link rather than rendering a join URL. - Check the event again after processing, using your app’s event-update or refresh flow.
- Show the video entry point only when the conference status is
successand that entry point is present. If the status isfailure, do not present a missing or guessed link as a working meeting.
Keep event creation and link availability as distinct states in the interface. This avoids implying that a usable Meet URL exists merely because the Calendar event itself was accepted.

Choose the right Google API for the feature
Use the API surface that matches what the web app needs to do. Attaching a meeting to a scheduled event is not the same as managing Meet spaces or embedding your product inside the Meet interface.

These distinctions are described in Google’s Meet API overview. A calendar-scheduling app that only needs to attach a joining link generally does not need to build its integration around the Meet REST API.

Authorize users with appropriate OAuth scopes
The Meet REST API uses user authentication: the app operates on behalf of the signed-in user and is limited by that user’s permissions. Google recommends choosing the narrowest scopes needed. Its Meet authorization guide classifies scopes by sensitivity, including sensitive scopes for meeting-space access and restricted scopes for downloading Meet-created Drive recordings and transcripts.
Before launch, check the current scope classifications and verification requirements for the exact features you intend to offer. Google states that restricted-scope data stored on or transmitted through servers requires a security assessment. Adding access to recordings, transcripts, or other meeting data can therefore introduce authorization and compliance work beyond ordinary Calendar event creation.

Protect conference privacy and existing event data
Generate a separate conference for each event
Do not reuse Google Meet conference data across multiple Calendar events. Google warns that reuse can create access problems and expose meeting details to unintended users. Its event reference recommends generating a unique conference for each event with createRequest.
Full-sync a local event cache before enabling conference changes
If your existing app stores Calendar events locally, perform a full sync of events before enabling conferenceDataVersion=1 for modifications. Google’s event creation guide warns that modifying events without first syncing can inadvertently remove conference details already on them. This is a migration precaution for an app with a local event store, not an extra step for every new integration.
Do not use Meet data to evaluate users
Google says the Meet REST API is not intended for domain performance tracking or user evaluation, and Meet data should not be collected for those purposes. Keep product analytics separate from gathering meeting data for evaluation; consult the Meet API overview when defining your data use.
