It can reduce the data needed to store or transmit video, but longer prediction chains can make seeking, editing and decoding less convenient.
How long GOP compression works
GOP means “group of pictures”: a sequence of coded pictures built around independent refresh pictures and predicted pictures. A GOP is defined both by its picture arrangement and by how often independent refresh points occur. “Long” describes an extended interval or predictive run compared with a shorter-GOP or all-intra arrangement; it does not specify one universal number of frames. The codec and encoder settings determine the actual structure. AWS Elemental Live describes GOP size as the interval between I-frames, while AWS Elemental MediaConvert describes GOPs as arrangements of compressed frame types.
I-pictures provide independent access points
An I-picture (often called an I-frame) is coded independently of other pictures, so it can be decoded without reconstructing earlier pictures in the sequence. An IDR picture is a particular refresh boundary: following pictures do not refer back to pictures from before that IDR. Independent pictures generally require more bits than predicted pictures, according to AWS’s MediaConvert guidance.
P- and B-pictures use prediction
A P-picture predicts from earlier pictures and stores information needed to represent changes rather than a complete independent image. A B-picture can use earlier and later pictures as references. AWS describes B-pictures as potentially efficient in bit use, but the result and latency depend on the encoder configuration and reference structure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why encoders use long GOPs
Because predicted pictures can encode changes instead of storing every picture independently, a long-GOP stream can represent video with fewer bits than an all-intra stream. In Canon’s camera terminology, increasing the number of P/B pictures per I-picture reduces file size. This can help meet a constrained bitrate or storage budget, but it does not guarantee better visual quality: the outcome also depends on content, codec, bitrate and encoder settings. Canon explains the IPB/Long GOP and ALL-I/Intra-frame distinction in its videography FAQ.
What the trade-offs mean in practice
- Seeking and editing: To reconstruct a requested predicted picture, a decoder may need neighboring reference pictures. Seeking and frame-accurate editing can therefore be less convenient than with independently coded pictures. The effect varies with the format and editing application. The EBU/SMPTE task force report discusses GOP structure in relation to latency, and SWGDE’s technical overview covers digital-video structure and workflow considerations.
- Latency: Picture dependencies and ordering can affect how much buffering or reordering is needed. GOP length is one contributor among several; it is not, by itself, a complete measure of end-to-end latency.
- Refresh frequency and bit use: Shorter intervals between independent refresh pictures can make random access more frequent, but independent pictures generally spend more bits than predicted ones.
- Motion and scene changes: Rapid changes can make prediction less effective. SWGDE notes that shorter GOP patterns may suit rapid transitions, but does not establish a universal frame count.
How to choose a GOP setting
There is no best GOP length for every camera, encoder or delivery format. Choose based on the constraints that matter to the final workflow:

- Set the bitrate and quality target. A longer predictive run may use bits more efficiently, but judge the result on the actual footage rather than treating GOP length as a quality guarantee.
- Consider the footage. Motion-heavy scenes and frequent cuts may benefit from more frequent independent refresh pictures; test representative scenes when quality and access behavior matter.
- Match the editing and playback workflow. If users need fast arbitrary-frame seeking or precise editing, weigh that need against compression efficiency and available decode resources.
- Account for latency and reference ordering. Live workflows may constrain B-picture use and reference structures. Adjusting GOP length alone may not achieve the required latency.
- Check delivery and segmentation requirements. GOP boundaries and open-versus-closed reference behavior may need to align with segment boundaries. AWS Elemental Live recommends a closed-GOP cadence of one for segmented HLS or DASH output in its service guidance, while allowing open GOPs for non-segmented output; follow the current requirements of the target service or specification.
- Translate frames into time for the actual frame rate. The same frame count represents a different duration at different frame rates, and codec implementations differ.
AWS MediaConvert gives a typical GOP duration of 1–2 seconds as vendor guidance, with examples of 30 or 60 frames at 30 fps. That is not a universal standard or prescription; the appropriate setting depends on the codec and delivery workflow. See AWS MediaConvert’s encoding guidance.

| Approach | Picture coding | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Long GOP | Independent pictures anchor a run of P- and/or B-pictures that use prediction. | Can reduce data compared with coding every picture independently; picture dependencies may make random access and editing less convenient. |
| All-intra | Each picture is coded independently rather than relying on inter-picture prediction. | Supports independent access to pictures, but does not gain the same data savings from predictions between pictures. |
These are general characteristics, not guarantees about a specific codec, camera, file size or editor. The exact behavior depends on encoder settings and the intended workflow.
