“Internet of Money” is a metaphor for internet-native value that can be transferred digitally. It is especially associated with Bitcoin: an open, peer-to-peer network intended to let people send value online without routing each payment through a bank. The phrase is not a formal technical standard, nor does it describe every online payment service or cryptocurrency.
What the phrase means
The analogy is to the internet’s open protocols for moving information. In the Bitcoin context, “Internet of Money” suggests a network that can move value across the internet, rather than requiring every transfer to pass through a financial institution. It is a way to explain an idea, not a precise technical category.
That distinction matters: paying with a banking app is an internet payment, but it does not necessarily use an open peer-to-peer monetary network. When using the phrase, name the particular network or system you mean.
Why Bitcoin is associated with it
Bitcoin’s original whitepaper, titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System,” proposed online payments sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Its abstract describes that purpose explicitly. Read the Bitcoin whitepaper.

Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin as an open-source, peer-to-peer payment network with no central authority or banks. Its FAQ puts the user-facing analogy simply: “From a user perspective, Bitcoin is pretty much like cash for the Internet.” These are descriptions of Bitcoin’s design and intended function, not a claim that every transaction is instant, free, or indistinguishable from physical cash. How the phrase became popular
The expression is closely associated with Bitcoin educator and author Andreas M. Antonopoulos. Google Books’ record for his 2016 book says he was among the first to use “The Internet of Money” to describe Bitcoin and its potential impacts. Antonopoulos’s official site describes the series as explaining why Bitcoin matters, including its technological, philosophical, social, and historical implications. - Not every online payment: A payment made through a website or app may still rely on banks, card networks, or a payment provider.
- Not a formal standard: The phrase is explanatory language, not a protocol specification or official technical classification.
- Not a synonym for every cryptocurrency: The phrase’s prominent usage is tied to Bitcoin. Other systems may have different operators, participation rules, and ways of transferring value.
Bitcoin educator Andreas M. Antonopoulos described Bitcoin in a 2015 WIRED interview as “the ‘internet of money and currency is just the first act’.” That is his framing of Bitcoin’s potential, not a technical guarantee or an outcome established by the quotation. WIRED interview.
