A software port number is a logical number used by network transport protocols to distinguish communication endpoints and, by convention, identify services. It is not a physical connector, and the number alone does not prove which program is using it.

What a software port number means

RFC 7605, an Internet Engineering Task Force Best Current Practice published in August 2015, defines a port number as a 16-bit number used for two purposes: demultiplexing transport endpoint associations within a host and identifying a service. In practical terms, a port helps a computer work out which network communication endpoint should receive particular traffic.

Port numbers are used by transport protocols such as TCP and UDP, as well as SCTP and DCCP. They are part of logical network addressing, not hardware. An Ethernet jack, USB connector, or router socket may also be called a port, but that is a different meaning of the word.

How port numbers help distinguish network traffic

When network traffic arrives, a host considers the transport protocol, IP addresses, and source and destination port numbers to distinguish transport sessions and direct traffic to the appropriate endpoint. A port number is therefore meaningful as part of this combination; it is not a standalone address for a computer or application.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

Port numbers also have conventional service meanings. IANA’s Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry records service names, port numbers, transport protocols, and related assignment information. These shared defaults let communicating systems use familiar mappings without negotiating a port for every service. RFC 6335 describes the registry procedures and the role of those assignments.

Does a port number identify a specific program?

No. An IANA assignment is a convention, not proof that a particular service is running on a host or that a port is currently in use. A service can use a different port if the communicating endpoints are configured to use that alternative. Likewise, a device or network intermediary that guesses an application from a port number can be wrong.

Always pair a port number with its transport protocol when checking an assignment. TCP and UDP entries with the same numeric value are distinct registry entries and do not automatically mean the same service.

IANA range name Numbers What the category means
System Ports 0–1023 Assigned through IANA; a System port does not necessarily require special operating-system privilege.
User Ports 1024–49151 Assigned through IANA. System and User ports are sometimes both called “registered,” which can make that term ambiguous.
Dynamic and/or Private Ports 49152–65535 Not assigned in the registry in the same way as System and User ports.

These are IANA categories, not universal rules about what every operating system permits an application to use. For a current service-specific assignment, check the registry entry for both the number and transport protocol rather than relying on an old port list.

How to check what a port number is assigned to

  1. Open the IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry.
  2. Look up the numeric port and identify the relevant transport protocol, such as TCP or UDP.
  3. Read the service name and assignment details as the registered convention, not as confirmation that a particular device is running that service.
