PC port colors are quick visual clues, not a universal specification. On many desktop motherboards, green is headphone or front-speaker output, pink is microphone input, and light blue is line input. For the exact function of a port, check its label and your computer or motherboard manual.
What do the common PC audio port colors mean?
The familiar color scheme applies mainly to analog 3.5 mm audio jacks. Intel lists these assignments for a common six-jack motherboard panel:

These are common assignments, not a guarantee for every computer. Intel notes that audio-port colors may vary by manufacturer. Intel’s motherboard guide describes the six analog audio ports and their typical roles.
How do simpler audio panels differ?
A PC with basic audio may have just separate headphone or speaker output and microphone input, rather than the full set of surround-sound jacks. Some systems also combine headphone and microphone functions in one combo jack.

For example, ASUS documents a desktop arrangement with a pink microphone port, a lime line-out port, and a light-blue line-in port, as well as front-panel headphone and audio combo jacks. The exact layout depends on the model and may vary by region. See ASUS’s desktop computer port guide.
How can you identify an uncertain port?
- Look for a label or icon. A headphone, microphone, or speaker symbol can clarify the intended function when color is ambiguous.
- Check the connector and location. Determine whether the port is a separate audio jack or a combo jack, and whether it is on the front or rear panel.
- Find the exact computer or motherboard model. Consult its manual or official support page for the port layout and capabilities.
- Follow the model-specific documentation over a generic color chart. Lenovo’s ThinkStation P520 rear-view documentation explains that color coding can help identify cable connections, while noting that hardware may differ from an illustration.
Do USB port colors indicate speed or charging?
Not reliably across PC manufacturers. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal meaning for blue, red, yellow, or black USB ports. Do not assume speed or charging support from USB color alone; check the manual for the particular PC or motherboard.

What does “PC color codes” cover?
There is no single color legend for every connector on a PC. The best-known color scheme is for analog audio jacks; other ports should be identified by their labels, documented functions, and the manual for the specific machine.
