You can inspect parts of social-media data exports in a browser, but Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook do not provide one common archive format. Start by identifying the platform, the export request date and the file type; then open a small HTML, JSON or text file before exploring the rest. Treat the archive as sensitive personal data, not as an ordinary sample dataset.
How do I download my Instagram or Facebook data?
Meta routes Facebook and Instagram data tools through Accounts Center. Meta says you can request information from both accounts together or separately; the available categories and format choices should be confirmed in the live account flow, since they can change. Facebook and Instagram archives reflect the categories and controls offered by Meta, rather than a guaranteed copy of everything held internally. Meta’s 2020 description says Instagram’s Download Your Data can include additional interaction data and inferred categories used for Explore; that does not mean every archive includes every category. Meta describes a data-log entry as “a formatted version of a single row of data from Hive” that has been processed to make underlying data transparent and easier to understand. What is in a TikTok data download, and what might be missing?
TikTok’s consumer support page says some data may be unavailable, and some categories may not include the latest 24 to 48 hours. Once the file is prepared, TikTok says it remains available to download for up to four days. Request the file when you are ready to retrieve it, and check the current instructions at TikTok Support’s data-request page.
TikTok’s developer documentation describes a separate Data Portability API. Its “text” and “json” formats describe API output; they should not be treated as a definitive inventory of formats or options in the consumer app. The API page was updated August 4, 2026. How do I read an X archive?
X says its archive is a ZIP with HTML and JSON files and requires identity verification during the request process. Its help page describes the archive as a snapshot of X information starting with the first post. The archive can also include sensitive material such as Direct Messages, media, contacts and inferred information. Consult X’s archive instructions for the current request and retrieval flow.
Open an HTML file in a browser when you want a human-readable view. JSON is structured data: its braces, keys and values are intended to be interpreted as records, not laid out like a conventional web page. Do not assume that a particular filename, folder arrangement or field will be present in every archive.

Can I open a social-media data export in a browser?
Often you can browse HTML directly, and many browsers can display JSON or plain text. Whether that is useful depends on the files you received: archives can include structured records as well as media and other files that are not naturally readable as a page. The platform documentation establishes different formats and scopes, not compatibility results for every browser or parser.
- Keep the original archive intact. Make a working copy before opening, reorganizing or experimenting with the files.
- Record what the archive is. Note the platform, the date you requested the download, and any version or date information shown with it.
- Start with a small file. Inspect one HTML, JSON or text file before attempting a large, media-heavy archive. Use the file extension and contents to distinguish a readable page from structured records.
- Interpret fields in context. A posted item, a message, a viewing record and an inferred interest are different kinds of information. Do not treat a platform-generated label or inference as objective fact.
- Keep sensitive files under your control. Avoid uploading an archive to an online parser unless you have deliberately assessed that service and how it handles the data.
This is a cautious way to inspect an export, not a claim that any particular tool parses every platform’s files locally or safely. Official descriptions show why care matters: an archive may contain private messages, contacts, media, activity records or inferred attributes.

Can I parse Instagram and Facebook exports together?
You can analyze information from both, but the available documentation does not establish a shared schema. Meta provides access to both through Accounts Center, while its export categories and records are platform products; X and TikTok document their own archive or portability formats. A parser should identify the source platform, request date and file type before interpreting fields, rather than treating similarly named fields as equivalent.
Nor should an export be treated as a complete mirror of a platform’s internal database. TikTok explicitly notes unavailable categories and recency gaps for some data. Meta describes data logs as processed records drawn from its warehouse. The products give users access to specified information, not a promise that every internal record is included.
