Before publishing an AI-written petition, verify every factual claim against the original evidence, then correct, qualify, attribute, or remove anything the evidence does not support. An AI-generated citation, confident tone, or plausible quotation is not proof. Google Search Central advises manual fact-checking before publication, and the House of Commons Library says to treat every AI-produced factual statement as unverified until checked.

1. Turn the petition into checkable claims

Read the whole draft and mark each statement that could be true or false. Split compound sentences into individual claims so one supported detail does not make an unsupported detail look verified.

Include claims about names and roles, dates, places, organizations, quantities, statistics, events, causes, quotations, allegations, laws, policies, and procedures. British Columbia’s government guidance identifies these as areas to check and also recommends looking for contradictions across an output.

Give each claim a short label or number. That makes it easier to track what you checked and prevents a paragraph’s general plausibility from standing in for evidence on each point.

2. Verify each source and what it actually says

Open every link and locate the cited passage, table, recording, or data. Check that the source exists, is relevant to the exact claim, and supports the wording used in the petition. A plausible-looking title or URL, or a quotation produced by AI, does not establish that the source contains the stated evidence. British Columbia’s government guidance puts it plainly: “Always check that sources are real, relevant and reliable.”

Prefer evidence closest to the fact being asserted: an original document, official government or organization page, original dataset, primary legislation, recognized regulator, or peer-reviewed publication, as appropriate. Secondary sources can add context, but several pages repeating the same claim are not independent confirmation. The House of Commons Library’s guidance recommends checking factual statements rather than relying on an AI’s presentation of them.

Check quotations word for word

Compare a quotation with the original document, transcript, or recording. Confirm the speaker, wording, and surrounding context; do not publish a paraphrase in quotation marks. If you cannot find the original, remove the quotation or rewrite the point as an appropriately attributed, unverified claim only if there is a sound reason to retain it.

Check dates, numbers, and context

For every figure, find its source and preserve the source’s timeframe, population, geography, definitions, and qualifications. Check whether an older statistic, policy, officeholder, or procedure is still current. Read enough of the original material to ensure the petition has not dropped a caveat that changes the claim’s meaning.

3. Treat legal and procedural claims as high risk

Check that each cited law, case, rule, or procedure exists, is current, applies in the relevant jurisdiction, and supports the proposition the petition makes. Legal AI can produce plausible but false citations, distorted quotations, or incorrect procedural guidance. The National Center for State Courts advises checking citations directly in primary sources and independently verifying case names, holdings, and references.

A public campaign petition is not the same as a document filed with a court. If the petition is for a court or a particular official process, check that court’s current rules and guidance; requirements for one court do not automatically apply elsewhere. For claims that require legal interpretation or could materially affect someone, ask a qualified legal reviewer rather than relying on the AI draft.

4. Compare sources and inspect the petition as a whole

When sources disagree, compare their dates, jurisdictions, definitions, methods, and proximity to the underlying evidence. Prefer the source closest to the fact being asserted. If the disagreement remains unresolved, explain it accurately or narrow the claim; do not quietly select whichever source best supports the petition.

Then read the entire petition for conflicts: do its dates, numbers, quotations, or descriptions agree with one another? Does it omit relevant evidence that cuts against its argument? Correcting claims individually is not enough if their combined presentation creates a misleading impression.

5. Decide what to do with every claim

Use a claim-by-claim record to make the review repeatable. A simple table can capture the statement, its evidence, and your decision:

Review field What to record
Claim The exact factual statement, split into one checkable point
Evidence The source and the passage, data, or recording that bears on it
Decision Keep, correct, narrow, attribute, or remove
Reason How the evidence supports the final wording, or why it does not
  • Keep a claim when reliable evidence supports its wording and context.
  • Correct or narrow it when the evidence supports only a more limited statement.
  • Attribute it as an opinion or allegation when that is what it is, rather than presenting it as an established fact.
  • Remove it when you cannot substantiate it and have no defensible way to present it.

Give extra scrutiny to numbers, named people or organizations, quotations, allegations, legal or procedural statements, and claims about current policies or events. This is a practical editorial priority based on their potential to mislead or cause harm, not a formal risk scale. Have a subject-matter expert review technical or contested claims, and a qualified legal reviewer assess claims that depend on law or procedure.

Finally, a responsible human editor should review the finished petition and its public-facing headline, description, and other summaries. Google Search Central’s publication guidance includes reviewing metadata as well as the content itself.

6. Do not use AI detectors as fact-checkers

An AI detector cannot tell you whether a petition’s claims are true. The House of Commons Library warns that detection tools are unreliable and should not be treated as conclusive. Check the evidence and wording directly instead; a detector result is not a substitute for source review.

7. Check whether disclosure rules apply

There is no universal disclosure rule established for every petition. Requirements depend on where and how it is published, the applicable law, and the platform’s terms. Check those rules before deciding what to disclose, and do not treat guidance for one jurisdiction or court as a general rule.

For example, the European Commission describes AI Act Article 50 transparency obligations that apply from 2 August 2026 to certain AI-generated or manipulated text publications informing the public on matters of public interest. The page also describes an exception where material has undergone human review and is subject to editorial responsibility. This is EU-specific information, not a disclosure rule for every publisher or location.

Separately, the Federal Court of Australia practice note sets expectations for people who appear before or file documents with that Court, including verification responsibilities and disclosures in specified evidentiary circumstances. It should not be generalized to ordinary public campaign petitions or to other courts. Check the current rules of the specific platform, jurisdiction, or court relevant to your petition.
