Many AM4 CPU coolers can be reused on AM5, but socket-level compatibility does not guarantee that every cooler or mounting kit will fit. Check the exact cooler model, how its mount attaches to the motherboard, and the manufacturer’s AM5 compatibility instructions before installing it or buying an adapter. AM5’s backplate is fixed to the motherboard, so a cooler that requires replacing it may not be directly compatible.
Does an AM4 cooler work with AM5?
Often, yes. AMD’s Socket AM5 Motherboards Quick Reference Guide, dated November 2024, lists “Socket AM4 cooler compatibility” as an AM5 platform feature. That establishes broad platform support, not approval for every individual cooler or mounting design. The guide also identifies AM5 as a 1718-pin LGA socket.
Mounting design is the key check. Noctua says its AM4 mountings that attach to the standard AMD backplate support AM5, subject to listed model exceptions. Corsair likewise says AM5 uses the same CPU cooler bracket size as AM4, but that is guidance for Corsair products—not a guarantee for another brand. Look up the cooler’s exact model in its manufacturer’s AM5 compatibility information.
How to check your cooler before reusing it
- Identify the exact cooler. Record the full model name and, if available, its hardware revision. A brand-wide statement may not cover every model in its range.
- Check its mounting hardware. Find out whether the AM4 installation uses the standard AMD motherboard backplate and its threaded mounting points, or a cooler-specific backplate or other hardware. A mount that requires replacing the motherboard backplate is a warning sign for AM5.
- Consult the manufacturer’s AM5 compatibility listing. Confirm that it names your exact cooler and check for exceptions or required hardware. Noctua’s AM5 compatibility FAQ describes Noctua products; use the relevant manufacturer’s own support information for other brands.
- Verify the required parts. The necessary AM5 hardware may already be included, or a model-specific upgrade kit may be needed. Check that the kit is listed for your exact cooler before ordering.
- Check physical clearance separately. Socket support does not establish that the cooler will clear your motherboard components, RAM, or case. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility resources for the complete build.
- Follow the AM5 installation instructions. Do not assume an AM4 video or guide applies unchanged to AM5. In particular, do not remove or substitute the motherboard backplate unless the cooler’s AM5 instructions explicitly direct you to do so.
Why the AM5 backplate matters
The AM5 backplate is fixed to the motherboard. Noctua’s backplate and installation FAQ explains that it stays in place during the documented installation procedure. Remove the motherboard’s stock cooler retention module only as the cooler’s instructions specify; leave the AM5 backplate installed.

This is why matching bracket dimensions alone is not enough. A cooler mount designed to replace the standard AMD backplate may not work on AM5 even if the cooler otherwise appears similar to an AM4 setup.
When an AM5 upgrade kit is needed
Some coolers need additional mounting hardware. Kits are specific to the cooler model or series, and some also depend on mounting pitch. Confirm both the cooler listing and the kit’s intended fit before buying.

Noctua NM-AM5/4-MP78 and MP83
Noctua’s NM-AM5/4-MP78 is for compatible coolers with 78 mm mounting pitch; the NM-AM5/4-MP83 is for compatible coolers with 83 mm pitch. Both attach to the stock AMD backplate. The pitch by itself does not prove that a cooler is compatible—check Noctua’s detailed compatibility information for the exact model.
Noctua also lists an AM5 upgrade kit for certain NH-L9a, NH-L9a-AM4, and NH-L9i coolers. Its compatibility FAQ names the NH-L9a-AM4 and NM-AM4-L9aL9i among exceptions to the general rule for standard-backplate AM4 mounts because those designs require replacing the standard backplate. Check the exact cooler entry and instructions rather than assuming an exception applies—or does not apply—to a related model.

Corsair ELITE Series retention kit
Corsair’s ELITE Series AM5/AM4 Retention Kit (CW-8960098) is described for RGB ELITE, ELITE Capellix, and LCD Series AIO coolers. Corsair says it is not compatible with PRO XT, Platinum, or older cooler series. Check Corsair’s current listing and your cooler’s exact model before purchasing, because product details and availability can change.

If compatibility is unclear
- Do not infer support from the cooler brand, an AM4 label, or another cooler in the same product family.
- Do not install a kit based only on its pitch or apparent bracket similarity; verify the model listing.
- Do not force the mount or remove the AM5 backplate to make an AM4 procedure work.
- Contact the cooler manufacturer with the full model and hardware revision if its compatibility listing does not resolve the question.
