YouTube says it uses an age-estimation model to decide whether an account belongs to someone under 18, even if the birthdate on the account says otherwise. If the model places you under 18 and you think it is wrong, you can use an age-verification option in your Google Account. YouTube says you do not have to submit ID just to keep using the service; without verification, teen protections remain in effect.
What YouTube’s age-estimation system does
YouTube calls the process age estimation, rather than age verification. Its model estimates whether an account holder is over or under 18 and may apply teen protections if it estimates the user is under 18. The estimate can override the birthdate entered when the account was created. YouTube describes the system on its age estimation Help page.

In a July 29, 2025 announcement, TeamYouTube said the U.S. rollout would begin August 13, 2025. It described multiple signals, including YouTube activity and account longevity. The follow-up FAQ says the model does not judge an account from one video genre in isolation; it names Pokémon, Minecraft, anime, and Roblox as interests that do not by themselves classify an account as under 18. YouTube has not published the full set of signals, their weights, or the model’s accuracy or error rate in these sources.
The current Help page lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and countries in the European Economic Area as markets where the model is applied, and says expansion will continue. Availability can change, so this list is not a permanent statement of coverage.

YouTube thinks I’m under 18: what changes?
If YouTube estimates that an account belongs to someone under 18, it says it automatically applies standard teen protections. The changes may include:
- Blocking access to age-restricted videos.
- Turning break and bedtime reminders on by default.
- Adjusting recommendations to limit repeated exposure to material that could be problematic for younger viewers.
- Applying search safeguards.
- Showing only non-personalized ads and excluding sensitive ad categories such as gambling and alcohol.
- Adding privacy reminders and changing autoplay behavior.
YouTube’s Help page also lists possible creator-account effects: new uploads may be set to private in Creator Studio, and earning from gifts on vertical livestreams may be limited. These are stated account effects, not a guarantee that every listed change will appear for every account or configuration.

YouTube got my age wrong: how to challenge the estimate
YouTube says people who believe the under-18 estimate is wrong can verify their age through a process in their Google Account. Depending on what is offered to the user, the listed options include government ID, credit-card information, or a selfie. YouTube does not say that every user will see all three methods, or give a guaranteed correction time.
- Open the age-verification prompt or flow associated with your Google Account. Follow the on-screen instructions to see which verification options are available to you.
- Choose an offered method. YouTube lists government ID, credit-card information, and a selfie as possible options; availability may vary.
- Complete the requested steps. The official route described by YouTube is the Google Account verification flow. The available sources do not specify a universal review period or promise an immediate change.
If you do not verify, YouTube says you can continue using the service with standard teen protections applied. It does not require users to submit ID simply to use YouTube. The steps and available methods are described in YouTube’s Help page and its age-estimation FAQ.

Three different YouTube age checks—not the same process
An account estimate, a restriction on a particular video, and verification for creator features address different things. Their triggers and documented next steps differ.

If it is your own video that has been age-restricted, that is a separate decision from an estimate about your account. YouTube Studio provides an appeal, and YouTube says a video’s age restriction can be appealed only once. See YouTube’s guidance on appealing age restrictions.

What YouTube has not established publicly
The official sources cited here do not state the model’s accuracy, an error rate, the full signal list or signal weights, or how long a successful correction takes. They also do not establish a universal appeal channel beyond the Google Account verification flow for someone challenging an under-18 estimate. Treat claims about precise model behavior or guaranteed turnaround times with caution unless YouTube publishes further details.
