If After Effects 2026 reports that it is out of memory or freezes when you press Spacebar, first check the exact app version. Adobe documents a compressed disk-cache crash issue in versions 26.0 and 26.2, and later releases include fixes for specific playback problems. Then address memory pressure, test the cache setting if applicable, and simplify the project or isolate effects if the problem continues. A spacebar freeze does not have one universal cause.

Start with the After Effects version and the symptom

Open Help > About After Effects (Windows) or After Effects > About After Effects (macOS) and note the version number. Adobe’s release notes describe fixes for particular issues, not a guarantee that every freeze is fixed by updating.

  • Versions 26.0 or 26.2: Adobe documents unexpected crashes when Compressed Disk Caching is enabled for some projects or hardware. Try the cache workaround below.
  • Version 26.2.1: Adobe lists a fix for a separate issue in which preview stopped and the application could not be closed.
  • Version 26.5: Adobe says playback stability improved when using disk cache. The release was published in September 2026.

Install a current update available for your system, then retry the affected project. See Adobe’s known issues in After Effects and fixed issues in After Effects for the version-specific details.

Turn off compressed disk caching in versions 26.0 or 26.2

If you are on 26.0 or 26.2 and see a crash or freeze during playback, test Adobe’s documented workaround:

  1. Open Preferences > Disk > Disk Cache.
  2. Uncheck Enable Compressed Frames (Lossless).
  3. Close Preferences and retry the project. Restart After Effects if the symptom does not change immediately.

Adobe says the option is enabled by default and may be incompatible with some projects or hardware. Treat this as a targeted test for those versions, not a universal fix for low-memory warnings. Details are in Adobe’s known issues page.

Free memory for previews

Close other Adobe apps and unnecessary programs, then restart After Effects and preview again. Adobe notes that other Adobe applications share memory resources, and third-party effects can add substantial memory use.

Check how much RAM is available to After Effects in the Memory & CPU preferences:

  • Windows: File > Preferences > Memory & CPU > RAM available for.
  • macOS: After Effects > Settings > Memory & CPU > RAM available for.

Adjust the allocation only with your total system RAM and other running applications in mind; there is no single allocation that suits every computer. Adobe’s low-memory preview guidance is in How After Effects handles low memory issues while previewing.

Purge the cache and check whether memory use keeps rising

Purging is useful both to free cached resources and to diagnose a recurring preview problem:

  1. Choose Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache.
  2. Preview the problem section and note whether the warning or freeze returns.
  3. Watch After Effects memory use in Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor while repeating the preview-and-purge cycle.
  4. If memory use keeps increasing, test the project in a copy: remove a suspected effect, restart After Effects, and repeat until you identify whether an effect is contributing to the problem.

Adobe recommends this diagnostic approach for memory issues. See its low-memory preview guidance.

Reduce the demands of a project that still runs out of memory

A project-specific warning can come from the demands of its layers, effects, output settings, or frame size—not just the amount of disk cache. Work on a copy and narrow the problem:

  • Disable or remove effects and plug-ins one at a time to identify a high-memory component.
  • Reduce unnecessary layers or visual complexity, and pre-compose or divide a complex project where that makes the work easier to process.
  • Check layer styles, blending modes, output options, and 3D effects; Adobe notes these can increase memory requirements.
  • Update After Effects, graphics drivers, and plug-ins, and close unnecessary applications.

Adobe recommends at least 2 GB of RAM per processor core as broad performance guidance, not as a guaranteed minimum or a diagnosis of a particular project. Its recommendations are on Improve performance in After Effects.

Check disk-cache storage—but do not confuse it with RAM

Disk cache stores frames on a drive and can help when retrieving a cached frame is faster than rendering it again. Adobe recommends a fast separate disk for cache and says SSDs are well suited. These measures may improve cache performance, but they cannot supply the RAM needed to render a frame.

Adobe explains: “After Effects requires a contiguous block of memory to store each frame; it cannot store a frame in pieces in fragmented memory.” In other words, a large disk cache does not eliminate the need for enough contiguous RAM for an individual frame. Adobe’s Memory and storage in After Effects page says the default maximum disk-cache size is 10% of the volume’s total size, up to 100 GB, and that After Effects checks for 10 GB free beyond the configured cache amount. Those are documented defaults and checks; they do not mean that increasing cache size will fix insufficient RAM.

Choose the next test based on what happens

What you observe Best next test
Out-of-memory warning or preview range shrinking Close unused apps, review RAM available for After Effects, purge all memory and disk cache, and monitor memory use during repeated previews.
Crash or freeze on 26.0 or 26.2 while using disk cache Uncheck Enable Compressed Frames (Lossless) and retry the same project.
Preview stops and the app will not close on 26.2.1 or earlier Update and check Adobe’s release notes for the specific fix; test again before changing unrelated settings.
Only one project or effect triggers the issue Test a copy of the project, simplify the affected section, and isolate effects or plug-ins.
Cache-related playback trouble persists on an older build Update to a release that includes Adobe’s playback-stability improvement, then retest; do not assume that the update addresses unrelated memory pressure.

Use older memory-allocation workarounds only if needed

Adobe’s September 2024 memory-allocation article lists additional options such as reducing RAM reserved for other applications, disabling Mercury Transmit, removing third-party plug-ins, pre-composing, and resetting preferences. Because that guidance predates the 2026 interface and current low-memory documentation, verify the labels in your installed version. Try non-destructive checks first; resetting preferences can change custom settings. Consult Adobe’s Unable to allocate memory article if the current steps do not resolve the issue.
