If you want a free alternative to 8mb.video, HandBrake is the clearest option supported by the available documentation: it runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, and includes presets with file-size and duration targets. It works on files stored on your device, so you do not need to upload a video to a browser compressor. The tradeoff is installing and using a desktop app instead of a quick online workflow.
8mb.video remains the more direct browser option. Its September 2026 release notes advertise premium queue-skipping, but that is a paid convenience feature—not evidence of better compression quality or a faster result overall.
Which 8mb.video alternative should you use?
Choose HandBrake if your video is already on your device and you want a free desktop tool with documented size-targeted presets. Choose 8mb.video if you prefer a browser workflow and are willing to accept its queue or consider its paid queue-skip option. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of the tools’ speed, output quality, or privacy.

What does “skip the line” mean on 8mb.video?
8mb.video is an online video-compression service where users choose a target size. Its release notes describe a premium option that skips the upload line. In release #89, deployed September 12, 2026, the service said: “A full year of premium for the price of ten months, and you skip the line on every single upload.” That is the vendor’s promotional wording, not an independently verified price comparison or a guarantee of compression speed.
#1 Best Overall
- Convert or compress video files within minutes
- Universal video converter supporting all popular formats
- Batch video conversion to convert thousands of videos
- Set compression/encoder rates, resolution and frame rate of output files
- Add video files directly from DVDs
The service’s terms, effective January 10, 2025, say subscriptions recur until canceled and payments are final and non-refundable. Canceling prevents future charges but does not refund the unused subscription period. The reviewed information does not establish the current dollar price, so check the live service and terms before paying.
Later release notes show ongoing changes: release #90, dated September 17, 2026, describes an optional compressor preview; release #91, deployed September 25, 2026, mentions resumable uploads and immediate file-type and size feedback. These are the company’s descriptions of its product, not independent performance tests. (8mb.video release notes)

Why HandBrake is the strongest free alternative
HandBrake is a free, open-source desktop transcoder for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It can create MP4, MKV, or WebM output. Its official presets include social-sharing options labeled with a target duration and file size; for example, “Social 25 MB 30 Seconds 1080p60” targets 25 MB or less. That preset is a specification, not a promise that every input will fit while retaining a particular visual quality.
To use it, install HandBrake, open your local video, choose a suitable preset, and encode an output file. If the result is still too large or looks worse than you want, adjust the settings and encode again. File size and perceived quality depend on the source and chosen settings; the cited documentation does not establish a universal result or encoding time.

This recommendation follows from the documented workflows: HandBrake offers local processing and size-targeted presets, while 8mb.video offers an online path. It is not based on a head-to-head speed, quality, or privacy test. (HandBrake project information; official presets)
Privacy and safe use
Using a desktop transcoder avoids uploading the source video to an online compressor as part of that workflow. That does not amount to a full privacy or security audit of either product.
The 8mb.video privacy policy discusses website logs that may include IP addresses, browser type, internet service provider, timestamps, referring and exit pages, and click counts. It also says third-party advertising partners may use cookies, JavaScript, or web beacons. The retrieved policy appears old—the search result marked it as crawled 4.6 years ago—and does not establish how uploaded videos are retained, whether they are inspected, or what current security controls apply. Do not assume files are private or deleted immediately based on that policy alone. (8mb.video privacy policy)

Other tools to consider
Directories such as AlternativeTo list FFmpeg, HandBrake, and other candidates. A directory listing can help you discover options, but it is not enough to establish a tool’s current features or make a like-for-like recommendation. The available documentation here supports a specific recommendation for HandBrake; it does not support giving other listed tools the same level of feature detail. (AlternativeTo listing)
