Source code management (SCM) records and organizes changes to code and related project files so a team can collaborate, review work, and recover earlier versions. The right SCM tool depends less on a universal ranking than on the workflow you need: Git or centralized version control, code review, delivery automation, deployment and governance, and the kinds of assets in your repositories.
What source code management does
SCM gives a project a shared, traceable history of changes. Developers can work in parallel, see what changed and when, review proposed work, combine contributions, and restore an earlier state when needed. Microsoft Learn describes a source control system as a way for developers to collaborate on code and track changes in its Understand Source Control – Azure DevOps documentation.
A common workflow is to create or clone a repository, make a branch for a change, commit updates, share the branch for review, resolve conflicts, merge approved work, and validate the result. The exact tools and checks vary by platform and team. SCM is useful for more than application source: project files and other digital assets can also be versioned.
Git is not GitLab: know what you are comparing
Git is version-control software. It is distributed: each clone has local repository history, so developers can commit and inspect history locally before sharing changes. GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea, Forgejo, and Harness are platforms or services built around Git workflows, although their surrounding features and deployment choices differ.

GitLab, for example, describes a broader platform that connects Git repositories with merge requests, CI/CD, security, governance, and deployment options. Microsoft’s Azure DevOps documentation also covers Team Foundation Version Control (TFVC), a centralized model in which historical data is kept on a server; Azure DevOps supports both Git and TFVC. These are different version-control models, not interchangeable product names.
How to compare SCM tools
Compare the workflow you need rather than repository hosting in isolation. Before choosing, check:
Rank #2

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Version-control model: Does the team want distributed Git, centralized TFVC, or a product-specific workflow documented by the vendor?
- Platform scope: Do you need repositories and review, or an integrated environment for planning, CI/CD, security, governance, and delivery?
- Deployment and control: Is the required option SaaS, self-managed, or another deployment model? Confirm availability for the product, edition, and plan you will use.
- Stack fit: How well does it work with your existing development, build, issue-tracking, and deployment systems?
- Repository and asset needs: Consider repository scale, contributor workflow, and whether you must version binaries or other non-text assets as well as code.
- Governance: Verify permissions, approvals, audit capabilities, and security controls in the relevant tier; do not assume the same controls are included across plans.
- Total cost: Check current official plan or quote information for your region and required features. Prices and entitlements change, so avoid relying on an old comparison.
Eight source code management tools to consider
The options below cover hosted Git platforms, broader development suites, self-managed platforms, and a system designed to handle code alongside other digital assets. They are alternatives to evaluate, not a feature-equivalent ranking. Confirm each vendor’s current documentation for deployment, integrations, governance, and plan entitlements before making a purchase or migration decision.
1. GitHub
GitHub is a Git-based platform for hosting repositories and collaborating on changes. Consider it when the team wants repository hosting and review within a widely used developer collaboration environment. Its official pricing page lists free and paid plans and describes public and private repository capabilities. Check the live plan details for your geography and required features; the page’s prices and entitlements can change.

6. Gitea
Gitea is one of the Git-platform candidates in a June 2026 buyer guide. Teams considering it should assess its current official documentation against their needs for hosting, review, integrations, deployment, scale, and governance. The guide identifies it as an option but does not establish feature-by-feature comparisons for those requirements.
7. Forgejo
Forgejo is another Git-platform candidate named in the June 2026 buyer guide. Evaluate it using the same concrete criteria as any other platform: confirm current deployment options, integrations, repository workflow, permissions, and operational requirements in its official documentation before adoption.
8. Harness
Harness appears among the source-code-management and DevOps platform options in the June 2026 buyer guide. Consider it if you are comparing broader platform scope as well as repository workflows, but verify the particular SCM, integration, governance, and deployment capabilities you need in current vendor documentation rather than inferring them from the category label.
Quick Recap
When a game-development team may want a different shortlist
For teams managing game projects, Unity Version Control (formerly Plastic SCM) is a relevant candidate alongside general-purpose platforms. Perforce’s vendor-sponsored 2024 State of Game Technology Report surfaced the following tool-usage percentages among its surveyed game-technology population: Helix Core 51%, GitHub 42%, GitLab 15%, Unity Version Control 8%, Bitbucket 5%, and Azure Repos/Azure DevOps 4%. These are reported usage percentages, not market shares or general adoption rates; the available excerpt does not establish that respondents chose only one tool or that the figures sum to 100%. Use them as game-technology survey context, not as a ranking for all software teams.
Choosing a shortlist that fits your team
- Write down your workflow. Specify how contributors branch, review, approve, merge, validate, and recover changes, and whether distributed Git or centralized TFVC is required.
- Decide how much platform you want. If repository hosting is the main need, compare that workflow directly. If you want planning, CI/CD, security, governance, or delivery in the same environment, include those requirements in the evaluation.
- List your assets and scale constraints. Identify whether the repository is mainly text-based code or also contains binaries and other digital assets; document repository size and contributor needs rather than assuming one platform fits all.
- Check deployment and control requirements. Confirm the exact current plan or edition that supports your required hosting model, permissions, approvals, and audit controls.
- Validate stack fit and cost. Test the required integrations and compare current official pricing or quotes for your region and feature set before committing to a migration.
