The difference between 8-inch, 5.25-inch, and 3.5-inch floppy drives is the size and format of the removable disk they accept, along with the era and computer uses each served. The names refer to the disk format, not the width of the whole drive. Capacity also depended on the recording format and generation: IBM cites 1.2 megabytes for its 1984 high-density 5.25-inch disk and 1.44 megabytes for the later 3.5-inch format, not universal limits for every disk of those sizes.

How the three floppy formats compare

Format Historical role Capacity example Physical detail
8-inch Early removable storage used to load software and updates onto computer systems IBM compares the original disk’s capacity to 3,000 punched cards; this is a historical analogy, not a byte figure. Large flexible disk by later personal-computer standards
5.25-inch Smaller, lower-cost format associated with desktop and early personal computing IBM reports 1.2 megabytes for its 1984 high-density disk. Flexible disk in a smaller format than the 8-inch predecessor
3.5-inch Compact format that became a mainstream personal-computer standard IBM describes the later format as holding 1.44 megabytes. Rigid plastic case protects the flexible magnetic disk inside

These capacity examples describe particular historical implementations, not a fixed capacity determined by diameter alone. Recording standards and product generations differed. A drive also needs to support the relevant media format and recording standard; being a floppy drive does not make it compatible with every floppy size. IBM’s history of floppy disk storage provides the cited capacity examples, while the Computer History Museum’s account of early drive milestones records the 8-inch and 5.25-inch chronology.

Why floppy drives evolved from 8 inches to 3.5 inches

8-inch: removable storage for computer systems

IBM says it began selling floppy disk drives in 1971. The original 8-inch disk helped load software and updates onto mainframe computers; IBM describes its capacity as equivalent to 3,000 punched cards. That comparison indicates the role it played in its own era, but should not be mistaken for a precise modern byte conversion.

The chronology includes more than one milestone. The Computer History Museum dates Shugart Associates’ 8-inch drive introduction to 1975. IBM’s 1971 sales date and the museum’s later introduction date refer to different events, so they should not be collapsed into a single launch date.

In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
  • Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.

5.25-inch: a smaller, more affordable desktop format

The Computer History Museum says Shugart Associates announced a 5.25-inch drive in 1976 after Wang Laboratories requested a lower-cost drive for its word-processing machines. The smaller format fit the emerging desktop-computing market. IBM notes that the Apple II, introduced in 1977, used 5.25-inch drives, and that the IBM PC, introduced in 1981, was available with two floppy drives.

IBM gives 1.2 megabytes specifically for its 1984 high-density 5.25-inch disk. That figure belongs to that disk standard and generation; it does not describe every 5.25-inch disk.

3.5-inch: a protected disk for personal computers

The Computer History Museum credits Sony with introducing 3.5-inch drives and diskettes in 1981. Hewlett-Packard’s general-use adoption in 1982 helped the format gain momentum. IBM describes the later 3.5-inch disk as holding 1.44 megabytes and notes its plastic case, which protected the flexible magnetic disk inside.

The rigid case changed how the medium was handled, not the underlying naming convention. The disk inside remained flexible, which is why the medium was still called a floppy disk. IBM’s account identifies the 1.44-megabyte format as a mainstay in the 1990s.

What the inch labels actually mean

“8-inch,” “5.25-inch,” and “3.5-inch” identify floppy-disk media formats. They are not measurements of the complete drive assembly. The format label helps identify which disk a drive accepts, but compatibility also depends on the recording standard the drive supports. A drive designed for one format cannot be assumed to read another simply because both use magnetic floppy media.

What floppy disks made possible—and why they declined

Floppy disks made it easier to move data and load software or updates without relying on a computer’s internal storage alone. Each reduction in disk size helped the technology fit changing computer systems, from early system use to desktop and personal computers. The 3.5-inch shell also provided more physical protection for the recording medium.

Floppies were eventually displaced as other technologies offered much greater capacity and faster transfers. IBM names optical discs, USB flash drives, memory cards, and cloud storage among the alternatives. Their use has not disappeared entirely: IBM says floppy disks remain in limited use with legacy equipment.

A historical recollection

IBM attributes this reflection to Warren L. Dalziel, whom it identifies as the lead inventor of the floppy disk drive: “I had no idea how important it would become and how widespread,” (IBM).
