There is no universally most accurate AI detector. A detector score is a signal about patterns in a sample of text—not proof of who wrote it. Results depend on the model, language, length, subject, and how the text was edited. For a fair review, choose a tool that fits your workflow, examine the passages it flags, and use other evidence before making a consequential decision.

The eight options below are GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, Winston AI, Turnitin, Sapling, ZeroGPT, and QuillBot. Their independent test results are not equally established, and several product details could not be verified from current official documentation. Treat this as a use-case guide, not a definitive ranking.

How to choose an AI detector

Start with the decision you need to make. A writer checking a draft has different needs from an instructor reviewing student work or an editor screening submissions. Consider these factors before comparing scores:

  • Evidence quality: Find out what models, human-written samples, languages, and text transformations were included in any accuracy claim. A score from one test set does not guarantee the same performance on your material.
  • Workflow: Decide whether you need sentence-level highlights, a document report, integrations, or a record of how a draft developed.
  • Limits and access: Check current scan allowances, text-length limits, language support, plan terms, and whether access is available to individuals or only through an institution.
  • Privacy: Review how text is stored, who can access it, and whether it may be used to train models.
  • Cost of error: Consider the consequences of both a false positive and a missed AI-written passage. The higher the stakes, the less appropriate it is to rely on a score alone.

There is no single accuracy figure that resolves these questions. A review by Fraser, Dawkins, and Kiritchenko in the National Research Council Canada Publications Archive notes that comparisons depend on the test data and evaluation metric, and finds no clear overall winner. It also discusses the potential value of combining detector results rather than depending on one tool.

Eight AI detector tools compared

The table distinguishes the limited independent test evidence available from product capabilities described by vendors. “Not tested” means the cited 2026 study did not include that product; it does not mean the tool is ineffective.

Tool What the available evidence says Practical fit and limits
GPTZero The 2026 Journal of Advances in Information Technology study reported 100% aggregate accuracy for GPTZero on its combined baseline dataset. Potentially useful for writers and educators who want document scans and writing-process tools. GPTZero’s official page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes a 10,000-character unauthenticated input counter, document and advanced scans, plagiarism checking, writing feedback, writing replay, Chrome and Google Docs tools, and integrations including Google Classroom and Canvas. It says English prose is its strongest language setting and recommends document-level results over sentence- or paragraph-level results. Its 99% accuracy and 95.7% RAID figures are vendor claims, not independent guarantees.
Originality.ai The same study reported 100% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. Its official product page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes AI and plagiarism checks, sentence highlights, writing replay, team features, and enterprise and education workflows. It advertises three free AI scans per day for up to 2,000 words. The page describes TLS 1.2-or-higher encryption, optional use of scan data for training, and the ability to delete scan history. Its claims that it is “most accurate” and performs well on adversarial data are vendor claims. Current paid-plan prices were not confirmed.
Copyleaks The study reported 100% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. The independent result is specific to that study’s corpus and method. Current official feature, language, privacy, and plan details are not established here, so verify them with the vendor before choosing it.
Winston AI Not tested in the cited 2026 study. It appears among the products readers encounter in this category, but the available evidence does not establish its current features, plan limits, or comparative accuracy. Check its current official documentation before relying on it.
Turnitin The study reported 93.2% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. In one paraphrased Grok condition, it reported 45.7% accuracy. These results show why baseline performance should not be generalized to edited text. Do not assume an individual can access Turnitin AI detection: availability may depend on an institution’s subscription and configuration.
Sapling The study reported 97.7% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. This is a result for the study’s sample, not a general accuracy promise. Current product workflow, limits, languages, and privacy terms are not established here.
ZeroGPT The study reported 95.5% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. Use the result only as a benchmark from that particular test. Current product features and terms should be checked directly with the vendor.
QuillBot The study reported 95.5% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset. The figure is not a guarantee for a different model, language, text length, or edited sample. Current detector limits and workflow details are not established here.

Grammarly was also tested in the same study, although it is not included in this eight-tool shortlist. The paper reported 90.9% aggregate accuracy on its combined baseline dataset and 19.0% in one paraphrased Grok condition. The study’s findings for Grammarly, like those for the eight tools above, apply only to the paper’s test sample and method.

What the accuracy figures do—and do not—show

The peer-reviewed Journal of Advances in Information Technology study, published March 10, 2026, evaluated nine detectors on text from ChatGPT-4, DeepSeek, Gemini, and Grok, as well as human-written samples. Its baseline combined-dataset results were:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 100% aggregate accuracy for Copyleaks, Originality.ai, and GPTZero.
  • 97.7% for Sapling.
  • 95.5% for ZeroGPT and QuillBot.
  • 93.2% for Turnitin and 90.9% for Grammarly.

Those percentages describe performance on the study’s combined baseline dataset; they do not tell you the probability that a particular accusation or clearance is correct in your own case. The authors also reported lower accuracy after paraphrasing, translation, or NNES-style rewriting. For example, in one paraphrased Grok condition, Turnitin scored 45.7% and Grammarly 19.0%. That condition is not a universal measure of either product, but it illustrates how much outcomes can change after text is transformed.

A detector can produce a false positive by flagging human writing, or a false negative by missing AI-generated text. A clean result therefore does not prove that a person wrote the material, and a flagged result does not establish that they did not. GPTZero’s official FAQ puts the limitation plainly: “No AI detector is 100% accurate, and AI itself is changing constantly.”

How to use a detector result responsibly

  1. Check whether the sample is suitable. Use enough continuous prose for the tool’s stated requirements. Very short passages, mixed-source text, non-English writing, or specialized subject matter may not match the conditions behind a tool’s claims.
  2. Read the flagged passages in context. Treat sentence highlights as places to investigate, not as proof. Look for evidence beyond the wording pattern that triggered the flag.
  3. Compare with the work process. When appropriate, review drafts, notes, version history, citations, or an author’s explanation of how they developed the text. A writing-history feature may help, but it is not itself a definitive authorship certificate.
  4. Use another source of evidence for high-stakes decisions. A second detector may offer another signal, but agreement between tools still does not prove authorship. Follow applicable institutional policies and provide a fair opportunity to respond.
  5. Protect the text you submit. Before uploading unpublished, personal, or confidential material, check the service’s current retention, access, and model-training terms.

For a comparison based on the cited study

GPTZero, Originality.ai, and Copyleaks had the highest reported baseline aggregate accuracy in the 2026 paper. That is a reason to consider them for a trial under your own conditions—not enough to declare any one the most accurate detector overall. The remaining scores and the study’s transformed-text results reinforce the need to compare tools on the kinds of writing you actually review.
