750 kW is a specific peak charging capability announced for some heavy-duty electric trucks; megawatt charging describes the higher-power Megawatt Charging System (MCS), not a promise that every truck will receive 1 MW. The European Commission says MCS can allow charging up to 3 MW, but its 2025 report noted that up to 1 MW was considered sufficient for road vehicles’ mandatory-rest charging needs at the time. Actual session power depends on the truck, charger, battery and site.

What is the difference between 750 kW and megawatt charging?

A megawatt is 1,000 kilowatts, so 750 kW is three-quarters of a megawatt. But these figures describe different things in this context: 750 kW is the announced peak capability of particular MCS-equipped trucks, while MCS is a charging system with a broader technical capability. The European Commission’s 2025 report says MCS can support charging up to 3 MW; it also says that maximum was not considered necessary for road vehicles at the time. European Commission report, 27 May 2025.

That distinction matters when reading product claims. MAN says MCS-equipped eTGX and eTGS trucks can charge at up to 750 kW. Scania likewise describes an implementation supporting up to 750 kW. Those are manufacturer-stated vehicle capabilities, not a definition of MCS or independent measurements of what a driver will get at every stop. MAN Truck & Bus; Scania.

Does a megawatt-rated charger mean your truck charges at 1 MW?

No. A headline peak rating describes capability, not a guaranteed rate throughout a charging session. The power delivered is constrained by the vehicle and charger together, including their voltage and current limits, the battery’s state of charge, thermal conditions and any sharing of power among charger outputs. A truck that supports a lower peak cannot make use of a higher charger rating; a high-capacity charger also cannot exceed the vehicle’s limits. CharIN MCS recommendations.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Power sharing can make the difference between a station’s headline capacity and the amount available to one truck especially important. For example, Kempower describes a system with a 1.2 MW peak across CCS and MCS outputs, with unused capacity distributable among outputs. That illustrates why a system-level peak does not by itself specify one vehicle’s charging power. It is an equipment example, not a universal MCS station configuration. Kempower MCS infrastructure.

What charging speed have truck makers announced?

Example Published claim How to interpret it
MAN eTGX and eTGS with MCS Up to 750 kW MAN’s stated maximum for these trucks; not a guaranteed session average. MAN.
Scania MCS implementation Up to 750 kW; 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes Scania’s manufacturer claims for its announced implementation, not a result established for all MCS vehicles or charging conditions. Scania.
MCS technical capability Up to 3 MW The European Commission’s description of what the system can allow—not the rating of every truck or charger. Its 2025 report said this maximum was not then considered necessary for road vehicles. European Commission.

These numbers are not directly interchangeable: one is a system capability, while the truck figures describe manufacturers’ implementations. The Commission also assessed up to 1 MW as sufficient for road-vehicle recharging during mandatory driver rest times; that is the report’s assessment, not a binding MCS limit.

EV Charging Station Sign, 8 x 12 Inch Reflective Aluminum
  • EV Charging Message: The 8 x 12 inch single-sided sign displays “Electric Vehicle Charging Station” with a charging icon; designed with high-contrast white graphics
  • Reflective for Low-Light Visibility: The reflective surface returns light from headlights, flashlights, or nearby fixtures; the sign does not glow in the dark or produce light on its own
  • Aluminum Construction: Made from aluminum with UV-protected printing for routine indoor or outdoor placement at homes, garages, parking areas, and businesses
  • Mounting on Multiple Surfaces: Four pre-drilled corner holes support installation on doors, walls, fences, gates, or poles using fasteners selected for the mounting surface
  • What’s Included: The package contains one electric vehicle charging parking sign; mounting hardware and a stake are not included

Is MCS for passenger cars?

The available evidence describes MCS as a high-power charging standard aimed at heavy-duty vehicles. The European Commission’s 2025 report describes CCS as the DC charging standard then applied to EU passenger cars and MCS as supporting substantially higher-power heavy-duty charging. It does not establish MCS as a passenger-car charging option, so car drivers should not assume their vehicle can use an MCS connector. European Commission report.

What should a fleet check before planning around MCS?

  1. Confirm the truck’s specification. Check the exact model and model year for an MCS inlet, supported voltage and current range, and its maximum charging power. Do not infer compatibility from a general MCS label or a different vehicle’s rating.
  2. Check the charger and connector. Confirm the site has MCS equipment compatible with the truck. CharIN recommends a broad MCS operating range of 400–1,250 VDC to reduce vehicle–infrastructure incompatibility. That is a recommendation, not proof that every deployed charger covers the whole range. CharIN recommendations.
  3. Ask how site power is allocated. Find out whether charger capacity is shared across ports and what output is available to a single truck when other dispensers are in use. System peak alone does not answer that question.
  4. Verify the route’s live charging options. General deployment plans do not establish that public MCS stations are available on a particular corridor. Check current operator and vehicle information before relying on a stop.

Why is MCS charging equipment different?

Very high charging power puts demands on thermal management as well as electrical compatibility. CharIN’s recommendations address thermal responsibilities for both the vehicle and the charging equipment, and Scania describes liquid-cooled connections in its implementation. A high-power MCS cable or charger should not be treated as interchangeable with ordinary passenger-car charging hardware. CharIN recommendations; Scania.

How long does megawatt charging take?

There is no single time implied by the term “megawatt charging.” Scania claims under 30 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% for its implementation, but that is a manufacturer claim, not a universal promise for MCS trucks. The time for a particular stop depends on the vehicle’s charging curve and operating conditions, the charger’s available output and site power sharing. Scania; CharIN.
