1080p sends more source detail than 720p, but that does not mean every viewer will see the stream at 1080p or notice the difference. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats and adjusts playback quality to viewing conditions. Choose the highest resolution your connection can sustain reliably, with bandwidth left over for headroom.
720p vs. 1080p at a glance

These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 live ingest, not universal minimums or promises about viewers’ download speed. YouTube lists different figures for other ingest codecs. Check the YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec and frame rate you use.
What viewers actually see
The encoder resolution is the source you send; it does not dictate the resolution every viewer receives. YouTube Help says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, and playback quality can change based on a viewer’s conditions. Factors include connection speed, player size, browser or device support, and the quality of the original stream.
More source pixels at 1080p can provide finer detail than 720p. That potential benefit is more relevant when fine detail matters or the video is shown in a larger player. It is not a guarantee that every viewer will notice a difference: YouTube may offer or select a lower quality, and some formats may not be available on every device or browser.

Viewers can use the player’s Quality control to choose an available option on supported devices. YouTube may also adjust quality to suit viewing conditions. Selecting a higher option cannot add detail that was absent from the source, and it may not play smoothly on a limited connection.
Bitrate, upload capacity, and stability
Higher-resolution live streams generally need more bitrate at comparable frame rates. For YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, 1080p30 is 10 Mbps versus 4 Mbps for 720p30; 1080p60 is 12 Mbps versus 6 Mbps for 720p60. These settings are for sending the stream to YouTube, not estimates of what each viewer needs to watch it.

Your sustained upload capacity must support the stream bitrate alongside other network use. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% additional bandwidth as headroom. A connection that only just accommodates your chosen bitrate may be vulnerable to competing traffic or changing network conditions.
Choose a resolution and frame rate that your connection can sustain, rather than selecting the highest option by default. A stable 720p stream is preferable to a 1080p stream that repeatedly drops or has poor stream health.

How to choose your live resolution
- Choose the content detail you need. Consider whether fine text, graphics, or other detail is important and whether viewers are likely to watch in a large player. Treat 1080p as added potential detail, not a guaranteed visible improvement for everyone.
- Check YouTube’s live recommendations. Use the bitrate entry for your ingest codec and frame rate. Compare like with like: 720p60 and 1080p30 differ in frame rate as well as resolution.
- Check upload capacity and leave headroom. Account for other devices and activity sharing the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% beyond the total stream bitrate.
- Test before going live. YouTube advises testing with similar movement and audio to the planned stream. Check stream health and playback under representative conditions.
- Monitor the live stream. If the stream has stability problems, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. Prefer the setting that works reliably on your actual connection.

Can viewers force YouTube to show 1080p?
Viewers can select 1080p in the Quality control when YouTube makes that option available for the stream and their device supports it. Playback quality can still depend on connection conditions, and a viewer cannot recover source detail that was not sent.
