Clean test code makes failures easier to understand and behavior safer to change. The goal is not fewer lines at any cost: keep the checks that protect users, while making each test’s intent, setup, and failure conditions easier to see. When refactoring tests, ask: “How do you know that your refactoring of the tests was safe and you didn’t accidentally remove one of the assertions?” That question from the Google Testing Blog is a useful standard for every cleanup below.

1. Name the behavior the test protects

A test name should tell a reader what observable behavior is expected, not how the implementation happens to produce it. Google’s guidance on what makes a good test emphasizes clear tests that describe code through its public APIs.

For example, test_retry_count_is_three describes an implementation detail. A name such as test_payment_retries_after_temporary_gateway_failure states the behavior and scenario. If the retry policy changes while the promised behavior remains the same, the second name is less likely to become misleading.

Prefer names that make the expected outcome and relevant condition apparent. Avoid encoding every setup detail in the name; the test body should provide those particulars.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Keep each test focused on one scenario

A focused test has one clear intent and a failure that points reasonably directly to that intent. The UK Home Office’s Developer Testing guidance describes a good test as clear in intent and having one test case.

If one test exercises a successful payment, a declined payment, and a network timeout, a failure may leave the reader unsure which behavior broke. Separate scenarios when they represent distinct outcomes. A parameterized test can still be appropriate when the same behavior is checked against several inputs and each case remains easy to identify.

Focus does not mean mechanically limiting a test to one assertion. Several assertions can form one coherent check—for example, verifying both the returned status and the resulting public response body—provided they establish the same scenario rather than bundling unrelated behaviors.

3. Remove duplication only when a helper clarifies the test

As suites grow, repeated setup and assertions can make maintenance harder. HMRC’s test automation guidance recommends reducing duplication across testing levels and maintaining test packs. Extraction is useful when a helper gives a repeated operation a clear name and lets the test read more directly.

For example, a helper such as create_active_customer() can be clearer than repeating a long, identical customer setup. But a helper that accepts many obscure flags or hides the important condition can make a test harder to understand than the duplication it removed. As a practical rule, extract stable, repeated mechanics; keep scenario-defining details visible near the test.

Also consider duplication across unit, integration, and UI tests. HMRC notes that test levels have different execution costs and that testing the same functionality at multiple levels has diminishing returns. Prefer a faster unit test when it provides the confidence needed, while retaining integration or UI coverage where interactions between components or the user-facing flow matter. The right mix depends on the software; unit tests do not automatically replace higher-level tests.

4. Make setup and fixtures understandable

Test setup should make the conditions of the case clear. A reader should not have to chase several layers of fixtures or global configuration to discover why a test is expected to pass or fail. This is practical advice based on the sources’ emphasis on clarity, isolation, and comprehensible test cases.

Keep case-specific data close to the test when it explains the scenario. Use shared fixtures for genuinely common foundations, such as constructing a test client, but avoid oversized fixtures that create unused records or silently change behavior for every test that consumes them.

  • Use descriptive fixture and factory names that communicate the state they create.
  • Make important differences explicit in the test, such as an expired token or an unavailable dependency.
  • Review fixture scope: wider-scoped state can save setup time, but may introduce order dependence if it is mutated.

5. Make assertions communicate the contract

An assertion is the test’s evidence. It should check observable behavior and make the failure useful to whoever investigates it. Google’s test-refactoring guidance specifically warns against accidentally removing assertions while restructuring tests.

When changing test code, compare the old and new checks deliberately: identify what behavior each assertion established, then verify the revised test still establishes it. Do not preserve an assertion merely because it exists if it checks an irrelevant implementation detail; replace it with an appropriate behavioral check rather than silently dropping coverage.

Assertions can also be too strict. The pytest documentation on flaky tests notes that overly strict assertions can contribute to flaky tests, including comparisons involving floating-point values or timing. Use tolerances where the contract permits variation, and assert stable outcomes rather than incidental ordering or exact timing unless those are requirements.

6. Control state and external dependencies

Repeatable tests should not depend on uncontrolled environment values, hidden ordering, or data left behind by another test. The Home Office guidance says test values should not vary by environment and unit tests should avoid external dependencies such as third-party APIs. Pytest’s documentation also identifies uncontrolled state, ordering dependencies, and missing cleanup as possible contributors to flaky tests.

Make inputs deterministic where possible: set dates, time zones, locale, random seeds, and configuration explicitly when they affect the behavior under test. Substitute a controlled fake or mock for an external service in a unit test; use a separate integration test when the real boundary itself needs verification.

Ensure each test owns and cleans up the state it changes. A database row, temporary file, environment variable, or global setting that survives a test can make later outcomes depend on execution order. Cleanup should run even when an assertion fails.

7. Refactor in small steps and check the signal

Make one meaningful cleanup at a time: rename, extract a helper, simplify setup, or restructure assertions, then run the relevant tests. Keep tests passing while refactoring production code; Google’s article distinguishes that from refactoring the tests themselves.

For test-code refactoring, Google Testing Blog’s Testing on the Toilet article proposes a more demanding check: deliberately make the code under test wrong, confirm that the expected assertions fail during the restructuring, restore the implementation, and confirm the tests pass. Its concise summary is: “Refactor test code with the tests failing.” This is a specific technique, not a requirement for every edit. Use it carefully in a controlled environment, and avoid leaving an intentionally broken implementation committed or deployed.

  1. Run the relevant tests before editing so you know the baseline.
  2. Make a small test-code change and inspect which checks remain.
  3. Where appropriate, introduce a deliberate defect locally and verify the intended assertions catch it.
  4. Restore the implementation, run the tests again, and review the diff for removed or weakened checks.

When a test is flaky after cleanup

A flaky test can pass or fail intermittently without a relevant code change. If a test becomes unreliable, do not simply rerun it until it passes or weaken the assertion without understanding the cause. The pytest guide identifies state control, ordering, cleanup, and overly strict assertions as areas to investigate.

  • Failure varies with test order: look for shared mutable state or missing cleanup; run the test alone and with its neighbors to isolate the dependency.
  • Failure varies by machine or environment: identify values such as locale, time, configuration, or service responses that differ, then control them for the test.
  • Failure involves timing or approximate values: check whether the test asserts a value more strictly than the behavior requires.
  • Failure follows a helper or fixture change: inspect what the helper initializes, mutates, and cleans up, and whether it is shared more broadly than intended.

These are diagnostic starting points, not proof of a single cause. Preserve a meaningful behavioral check while making the test’s dependencies explicit.
