The right VPN for remote work depends on what you need it to connect. For access to company files, apps, or networks, compare services built for team administration and controlled access. For one person who mainly wants encrypted internet traffic while traveling, an individual VPN may be enough—but it is not a substitute for company access controls.
Below are six products marketed for business or team use and one individual service that may suit a small-business user with simpler needs. This is a feature-and-fit comparison, not a ranking based on independent speed or security tests. Prices are provider-displayed figures seen on October 5, 2026; confirm current checkout terms before buying.
Business VPN or personal VPN: which do you need?
A remote-access VPN gives authorized users a protected way to reach an organization’s private network or resources. A site-to-site VPN instead connects networks, such as two offices. A personal VPN is generally intended to protect an individual’s internet traffic; it does not inherently provide centralized employee accounts, resource-level permissions, or company network administration.
Some modern business access products use identity-based controls to connect a person or device to selected resources rather than placing them on a broad network. Choose the model that matches your applications, identity policies, and network architecture. A corporate VPN also does not guarantee privacy from the employer: organizations may monitor, filter, or log activity under their policies, so employees should follow company rules.

Seven VPN services to consider for remote work
| Service | Best-fit use | Published price or minimum | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Teams seeking a managed business VPN, centralized control panel, integrations, and gateway or site-to-site options. | Lite displayed at $8 per user per month, with a five-user minimum, on the provider page accessed October 5, 2026. NordLayer pricing | Confirm which access, gateway, and integration features are included in the current plan. The former NordVPN Teams name is historical; the current product name is NordLayer. NordLayer rebrand statement |
| Proton VPN for Business | Remote or hybrid teams that want centralized administration, organization-wide 2FA, SSO/SCIM, and options such as dedicated servers. | Provider support documentation listed VPN Essentials at $6.99 per user per month and VPN Professional at $9.99 per user per month; Professional also required a dedicated server at $39.99 per server per month. Prices exclude tax. Proton business plans | Professional’s server charge changes the total cost. Check the current pricing page and checkout cadence. Router support is listed, but compatibility depends on the router; no model-specific recommendation is established. Proton VPN for Business |
| Tailscale | Organizations that want identity-based mesh networking and access to specific business resources. | Provider page displayed Standard at $8 per user per month and Premium at $18 per user per month; Enterprise pricing is custom. Tailscale pricing | A mesh access model is not interchangeable with a consumer VPN that routes general browsing traffic. Assess whether it fits your architecture and access policies. Tailscale Business VPN |
| ExpressVPN for Teams | Teams considering team licenses, endpoint coverage, global locations, and a fixed-IP add-on for allowlisting. | The order page displayed a five-license minimum; price and discounts vary with term and volume. ExpressVPN order page | Compare the full commitment and any add-ons rather than relying on an introductory monthly equivalent. ExpressVPN says it supports expert review sites through referral compensation. ExpressVPN for Teams |
| Windscribe ScribeForce | Teams seeking centralized billing and a team VPN; its business page says connections are unlimited. | $5 per user per month starting price and a five-seat minimum; optional shared static IPs are listed at $2–$8 per month. Windscribe ScribeForce | Check the applicable billing and static-IP terms, platform support, and administration features. Treat compliance and network claims as vendor statements to verify against your requirements. |
| Perimeter 81 | Businesses looking for managed remote access to local networks, cloud infrastructure, and applications. | Current comparable price not stated in the product information available here. Perimeter 81 pricing | Confirm current branding, plans, and feature availability directly with the provider; surfaced product information may be older than that for other options. Perimeter 81 |
| ExpressVPN individual service | An individual professional or very small business primarily seeking encrypted internet traffic while traveling. | Business-specific seat pricing not stated. This is an individual service, not a team plan. | Use it only when centralized company-resource access and user administration are not required. It is not equivalent to a managed business VPN. |
The listed prices are provider-published page values visible on October 5, 2026, not guaranteed quotes. Geography, billing cadence, taxes, promotions, plan configuration, seat minimums, servers, and add-ons can change the bill. No independent, same-protocol comparison establishes that one of these services is faster, more reliable, or more secure than another.
How to choose a remote-work VPN
- Define the access requirement. List whether staff need general traffic protection, access to an internal network, or access only to particular applications and devices. Distinguish remote-user access from site-to-site office connectivity.
- Check identity and administration. Verify supported SSO or identity-provider integrations, provisioning such as SCIM, centralized account management, organization-wide two-factor authentication, and how promptly administrators can remove a user’s access.
- Map permissions to resources. Determine whether users receive broad network access or only access to specified resources. Confirm that the product’s model supports the company’s policies and existing network design.
- Check device and deployment fit. Confirm support for employees’ operating systems and any gateways, dedicated servers, fixed or static IPs, or routers your setup requires. A provider’s router-support statement is not a compatibility guarantee for every model.
- Calculate the actual bill. Multiply per-seat charges by the minimum and expected user count, then include required servers, optional IPs, taxes, and the full billing term. Verify the total at checkout before committing.
- Evaluate security as a system. A VPN does not make an endpoint safe, prevent phishing, or replace identity and endpoint protections. Assess any broader zero-trust claims against concrete company requirements rather than assuming that the label supplies a particular control.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for a small business
A managed business VPN can provide a controlled route to company resources and administrative tools for assigning or revoking access. It is one layer of a security program, not a complete one: it does not by itself establish device health, stop a user from entering credentials on a phishing site, or replace strong identity and endpoint controls.
Rank #2
For a small business with no private resources to reach and no need to manage employee access, an individual VPN may address the narrower need of encrypting a worker’s internet traffic. If the business must manage users, limit access to internal systems, or retain administrative oversight, compare team products instead.
How much does a business VPN cost?
Among the provider pages checked on October 5, 2026, published starting prices ranged from Windscribe ScribeForce’s $5 per user per month to Tailscale Premium’s $18 per user per month, but those figures describe different products and plan levels—not a like-for-like market comparison.

Minimum seats materially affect entry cost: NordLayer Lite and Windscribe ScribeForce each listed five-user or five-seat minimums, and ExpressVPN for Teams displayed a five-license minimum. Proton VPN Professional adds a required dedicated-server charge in the support documentation. ExpressVPN’s order page varies offers by term and volume, while Perimeter 81’s comparable price was not stated in the available product information. Start with the access model, not a claim that one VPN is universally best. For managed access to company systems, compare the six team-oriented services by identity integrations, permission granularity, infrastructure needs, and full per-seat cost. For one worker who only needs encrypted browsing traffic, an individual service such as ExpressVPN may fit—but it does not provide the same company administration. Treat provider feature descriptions and pricing as claims to verify, not independent test results.
