For curls, rough-dry first, leave the lengths slightly damp, use a suitable barrel and styling product, then let the curl cool before releasing it. These seven practical lessons cover technique, attachments, cleaning and travel.
1. Start curls on damp—not soaking-wet or fully dry—hair
Dyson’s owner guidance says to “Start with damp hair.” Its Australia support guidance distinguishes attachments: brushes can be used on wet hair, while barrels work best on damp hair. For curling, rough-dry first, especially near the roots, then leave the lengths slightly damp. About 80–90% dry is a practical rule of thumb for the lengths, not a Dyson specification. 2. Use a hold product and the smallest suitable barrel
Dyson recommends applying a pre-styling product with hold and choosing the smallest barrel that suits your hair and intended curl. Treat that as a starting setup rather than a promise that curls will last: section size, hair texture and length also affect the result. Dyson’s owner guidance recommends both steps.
3. Dry the curl, then cool it before release
For a barrel curl, Dyson recommends high heat and high airflow. Keep the hair wrapped until it is dry, then press the cold shot for 5–10 seconds. Switch the machine off and pull it downward to release the curl. The stated 5–10-second interval is Dyson’s technique recommendation, not a guarantee of hold time. Dyson owner guidance gives that interval. A 2025 practical guide recommends a 10–15-second cold shot and holding until the hair feels dry to the touch; that is a different recommendation, so follow the method you choose consistently rather than treating the times as a single official range.

4. Choose an attachment for the finish you want

Dyson’s attachment guidance describes the brush finishes and wide-tooth comb use. Work through manageable sections and keep the brush moving until each section is dry. The best choice depends on both your hair texture and the result you want—not on a single attachment being best for everyone. Dyson’s attachment guidance covers these uses.
5. Adjust your technique to your hair
Hair type changes how you should section and handle it. Dyson’s guidance for fine, curly and coily hair emphasizes working on damp hair, controlled brush use, sectioning and avoiding tangles. If a brush catches or pulls, use a smaller section and guide it carefully rather than forcing it through. Choose the attachment according to the desired finish as well as texture: smoothing, volume, or curl. Dyson’s hair and attachment guidance provides the relevant technique advice.

6. Clean the filter when performance drops
Dyson recommends cleaning the filter about monthly or when the white LED flashes continuously. Brush the mesh without using chemicals or water, and clean the filter cage as directed in the instructions for your model. Hair products, dust and lint can restrict airflow, so a drop in performance may be a maintenance issue rather than a styling technique problem. Use the cool-touch tip or edge when handling attachments, and let the machine cool before swapping them. For international travel, check the manual: Dyson says the styler is engineered for the voltage of the country where it was purchased.
