To use Python for data science, learn the language fundamentals, set up a repeatable workspace, then practice numerical computing, data analysis, cleaning, visualization, and—when a question calls for it—statistics or machine learning. These seven steps are a practical sequence, not a rule that every learner must follow in exactly the same order.
If you are new to programming as well as Python, start with basic programming concepts alongside the official tutorial: it is written for programmers who are new to Python, not people who are new to programming.
1. Learn core Python before focusing on libraries
Data-science libraries are easier to use when you can already read and write basic Python. Practice variables, numbers, strings, lists, dictionaries, conditionals, loops, functions, modules, exceptions, and reading and writing files. Learn to read tracebacks and consult documentation when code fails.
The Python 3.14.7 Tutorial describes Python as “an easy to learn, powerful programming language,” but also says it is designed for programmers new to Python—not beginners new to programming—and does not cover every feature. Treat it as a foundation, not a complete curriculum. If programming itself is new to you, study those fundamentals before or alongside the tutorial, then deepen them as projects require.

2. Set up an interactive, reproducible workspace
Use a notebook to explore data and keep the notebook, data files, and package requirements organized in a project folder. Your goal is to run cells in order, save your work, and be able to recreate the environment later. A common source of confusion is installing a package into one Python environment while the notebook is running another; check that both use the same environment.
Jupyter’s installation guide describes installation through PyPI and pip, and points to environment-management options that include conda and mamba. Choose the setup that fits your needs rather than assuming one package manager is best for everyone.

3. Build numerical intuition with NumPy
NumPy’s central structure, the ndarray, is a homogeneous multidimensional array. Learn to inspect an array’s shape and dimensions, understand axes, index and slice values, use broadcasting, and perform vectorized operations and basic summaries. These ideas help explain how Python tools represent and operate on numerical data.
Work through the NumPy beginner guide with small examples. It connects arrays with CSV input and output, pandas DataFrames, and Matplotlib plots, so you can see how numerical computation fits into a larger analysis.

4. Load and inspect data with pandas
Start with a small CSV or another familiar tabular dataset. Before transforming it, write down a concrete question the data might answer. Then practice reading the file, inspecting rows and data types, selecting and filtering columns, sorting, handling missing values, grouping records, and calculating descriptive summaries.
The pandas 3.0.6 User Guide covers these tasks and recommends “10 minutes to pandas” for new users. Inspection matters: a column that looks numeric may have been read as text, and a summary is only meaningful if you understand what rows and values it includes.

5. Clean, transform, and combine datasets
Real data often needs work before analysis. Practice identifying missing or malformed values, normalizing inconsistent formats, removing or investigating duplicates, joining and concatenating tables, and reshaping data. Learn time-series handling when your project involves dates or measurements over time.
Record consequential decisions as you work: for example, why certain rows were excluded or how a missing value was treated. Those choices can change the result, so cleaning is part of the reasoning—not cosmetic preparation. 6. Visualize and communicate what the data shows
Use charts both to explore a dataset and to explain findings. Choose a chart to suit the question: inspect distributions when you want to understand spread, or relationships when you want to see how values vary together. Label axes and units so a reader can interpret the display without guessing. An association in a plot does not, by itself, show that one variable caused another.
Matplotlib’s getting-started guide shows how to make a first plot from NumPy values. The NumPy beginner guide connects arrays to plotting, while the pandas documentation includes plotting as part of its toolkit. NumPy’s guide notes that “With Matplotlib, you have access to an enormous number of visualization options”; begin with a chart that answers your question rather than choosing a chart for novelty.
7. Add statistics and machine learning when the question needs them
Build descriptive statistics and basic statistical reasoning on top of clean data and clear plots. If the task is to predict an outcome or find groups in data, learn the relevant machine-learning workflow: estimators, training and prediction, model selection, supervised and unsupervised learning, evaluation, and pipelines.
Machine learning is an extension, not a required first step for every data-science task. The cited scikit-learn tutorials are for version 1.1.3, so use the current official scikit-learn documentation for implementation instructions and version-specific details.

Choose a dataset small enough to understand and follow the process from question to explanation. You should be able to say what the data contains, how you prepared it, what analysis and plots you used, and what conclusion the evidence supports. Keep the work reproducible by saving the notebook and noting important cleaning choices and environment requirements. Free official documentation and open-source tools can support this practice; a physical book is optional.
