1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a compact yard, choose a tree only after you know where it will grow and how much room it can occupy at maturity. Redbud, serviceberry, and dogwood recur in several small-tree and native-tree guides; Japanese maple, flowering crabapple, pagoda dogwood, and American smoketree round out this region-dependent shortlist. None is a universal best choice: climate, soil, light, drainage, cultivar, and available space all matter.
How to choose a small tree for a compact yard
Start with the planting site, not the tree. Oregon State University Extension’s advice is direct: “You can’t just go buy a tree and then find a spot for it.” Map the space and consider nearby buildings, paths, utilities, and other plants before comparing options. Oregon State University Extension: Choose small trees that fit city yards
Check the expected mature height and spread of the particular species and cultivar you are considering, then compare those dimensions with the usable footprint. A small tree in a nursery container may grow too large for a narrow site. Pruning is not a reliable way to make a naturally unsuitable tree fit. Illinois Extension’s guidance on trees for confined spaces also emphasizes selecting for the location. Illinois Extension: Small trees for confined spaces
Finally, check local growing advice for your region and the exact site: sunlight, soil, drainage, and moisture can change whether a tree is a good choice. The candidates below are drawn from regional extension and botanic-garden lists, not ranked for nationwide performance. Confirm local suitability with an extension service or a reputable nursery before buying.

Seven small-tree candidates to compare
1. Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis)
Eastern redbud appears in both Illinois Extension’s confined-space recommendations and the U.S. Botanic Garden’s selection of small native trees. It is a candidate to investigate where local conditions suit it, rather than a size guarantee for every yard. Check mature dimensions for the specific form you plan to plant and confirm regional suitability. U.S. Botanic Garden: Small native trees
2. Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.)
Serviceberries appear in small-tree selections from Illinois Extension, Iowa State University Extension, and the U.S. Botanic Garden. The Botanic Garden describes spring flowers and edible fruit, giving the tree interest beyond its size. “Serviceberry” covers multiple species, so verify the mature dimensions and growing requirements of the particular one offered locally. Maryland Extension describes its native status in Maryland, spring bracts, fall color, and fruit that supports wildlife. Those details are specific to the regional guidance; check whether the species and site are appropriate where you live. Maryland Extension: Dogwoods in the landscape
4. Pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia)
Illinois Extension and Iowa State Extension include pagoda dogwood among small or native ornamental-tree candidates in their regional selections. Use those listings as a reason to investigate it locally, not as a nationwide recommendation. Before choosing it, confirm the mature size and conditions for the stock available in your area.

5. Japanese maple (Acer palmatum)
Oregon State Extension discusses Japanese maple as an option for city yards. Oregon State University Extension: Choose small trees that fit city yards
6. Flowering crabapple (Malus spp.)
Flowering crabapple is another city-yard option discussed by Oregon State Extension. Because the recommendation is at genus level, select a cultivar only after checking its expected mature dimensions and regional performance with a local horticultural source or nursery.

7. American smoketree (Cotinus obovatus)
Iowa State Extension includes American smoketree among native small ornamental trees for its regional context. - Available footprint: Compare the named cultivar’s expected mature height and spread with the space, including room near buildings, paths, utilities, and other plantings.
- Local growing conditions: Ask about regional suitability, sunlight, soil, drainage, and moisture rather than assuming a tree from another state’s list will suit your yard.
- What you want from the tree: Decide whether flowers, fruit, fall foliage, bark, or wildlife value matter most. The U.S. Botanic Garden and Maryland Extension describe multiple seasonal features for trees in their selections.
- Native status: A tree listed as native in one source’s region is not necessarily native where you live. Consult local native-plant or extension guidance if that matters to you.
Regional lists are useful starting points, but they serve different places and purposes. Iowa State Extension’s native-tree candidates and Maryland Extension’s dogwood guidance should not be read as interchangeable nationwide planting advice. Before you buy
- Choose the spot. Note the space available and nearby buildings, paths, utilities, and plantings.
- Identify the tree precisely. Get the botanical name and, where applicable, the cultivar—not just a broad common name such as serviceberry or crabapple.
- Verify mature dimensions. Ask a local extension service or reputable nursery for expected mature height and spread for that exact selection.
- Confirm site fit. Check regional suitability along with the planting site’s light, soil, drainage, and moisture conditions.
- Choose for the features you value. Compare flowers, fruit, fall foliage, bark, or wildlife value once the tree fits the site.
