A useful privacy setup is a handful of tools matched to the risks you actually face—not a magic app or a universal ranking. This guide covers seven practical choices: a password manager, two-factor authentication, Firefox privacy controls, a VPN, encrypted messaging, privacy-focused browser extensions, and DNS privacy. The available sources do not document one named security expert’s personal seven-tool setup, so these are evidence-based categories and examples, not claims about a particular expert’s habits.
1. A password manager for unique credentials
A password manager helps you create and keep distinct passwords for your accounts, rather than reusing a password that could expose multiple services if one account is compromised. Choose by examining its encryption design, supported platforms, autofill behavior, recovery options, and independent security assessments—not by relying on a blanket “best” label.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) notes that a security audit reflects a point in time; it is useful evidence, not a permanent guarantee. EFF also discusses browser extensions and selection considerations in its password-manager guide. Bitwarden and Proton Pass are examples with public security information: Bitwarden describes TLS-protected communications in its security FAQ, while Proton says Pass end-to-end encrypts password fields, usernames, web addresses, and encrypted notes in its security documentation. These are the providers’ descriptions of their products; compare the details and recovery arrangements that matter to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Two-factor authentication for important accounts
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second sign-in check beyond a password. Enable it for your email, password-manager account, financial accounts, and other services that support it. Bitwarden specifically advises users to enable 2FA on Bitwarden accounts; that is the provider’s recommendation for its own service, not a claim that every service offers identical options.

Before turning on 2FA, understand how you will regain access if your phone is lost or replaced. Check the service’s recovery process and store any backup codes somewhere separate from the device used to authenticate.
3. Firefox privacy controls for browser-level protections
Browser settings can reduce some exposure, but they are not a substitute for account security or careful browsing. Mozilla documents Firefox features including HTTPS-Only Mode and cookie containers. HTTPS-Only Mode can help avoid connecting to sites over an unencrypted HTTP connection; containers let users separate browsing contexts, such as personal and work activity. Strict settings or separation can affect site behavior, so adjust them if a site you rely on stops working.

A virtual private network (VPN) can be relevant when you want to address what a local network operator or internet service provider can see about some of your connections. It shifts trust to the VPN provider; it does not make you anonymous, prevent all tracking, or protect you from every threat. Websites, logged-in accounts, cookies, and browser fingerprinting can still identify or track activity.

Choose a VPN based on the concern you are trying to address, and weigh provider trust, logging claims, jurisdiction, performance, and cost. EFF explains the limits and selection questions in its VPN guide. Privacy Guides also treats VPNs as one category among several rather than a complete privacy solution: VPN recommendations and context.
5. Encrypted messaging for conversations
For sensitive conversations, use an encrypted messaging service that the people you need to reach will also use. The choice should account for group features, backup behavior, and metadata—not only message encryption. EFF’s Surveillance Self-Defense collection includes guidance on Signal groups, alongside other practical security topics: EFF Surveillance Self-Defense. Check the messaging app’s own current documentation for details about its encryption, backups, and account recovery.

6. Browser extensions for narrowly defined privacy needs
Extensions can add functions such as limiting cross-site tracking, but an extension also receives access within the browser that may expose browsing data. Install only extensions that solve a specific problem, verify the publisher and permissions, and remove tools you no longer use. Check that each extension is maintained and works with your browser; unnecessary or overlapping extensions can add complexity without a clear benefit.
Privacy Guides lists browser extensions among distinct privacy-tool categories. Its broader tools directory is useful for understanding that extensions are one part of a wider set of choices, not a substitute for a secure browser configuration.

7. DNS privacy for domain lookups
DNS (Domain Name System) translates a domain name into the address a device uses to connect. A DNS privacy service or setting may protect or limit exposure of those lookups in some circumstances, but it does not conceal everything you do online: the sites you visit, your accounts, and other network signals may still reveal activity. The right option depends on your device, network, and provider trust.
Privacy Guides lists DNS separately from VPNs, password managers, email, and browser extensions in its privacy tools directory. Treat it as a focused setting to evaluate, not an all-purpose privacy layer.
How to choose what belongs in your setup
- Start with account access. Use a password manager you can operate and recover, then enable 2FA on important accounts.
- Set browser protections you can live with. HTTPS-only behavior and separate cookie contexts can help, but test the sites you depend on.
- Match network tools to a real concern. Consider a VPN or DNS privacy setting only after deciding what observer or exposure you mean to address.
- Choose communication tools with your contacts in mind. Encryption is useful only if the people involved can use the same service and understand its backup and recovery behavior.
- Keep the setup manageable. Review permissions, recovery paths, and tools periodically; more apps do not automatically mean more privacy.
Tor Browser is a more specialized option for anonymity and censorship-circumvention use cases, as Privacy Guides explains; it should not be treated as a generic replacement for ordinary browser privacy settings. See Privacy Guides’ browser guidance.
