For most people, start with Dark Reader. It offers the best balance of website coverage, per-site controls, brightness and contrast adjustments, and maturity. Choose Night Eye instead if PDF support and visual fine-tuning matter most, Midnight Lizard for accessibility-focused customization, or Turn Off the Lights if video viewing is your priority.

Chrome’s own dark appearance setting changes much of the browser interface, but it does not reliably turn every website dark. These extensions fill that gap in different ways: some rewrite page styles, some invert luminance, some preserve media more carefully, and one is designed primarily to dim everything around a video.

How these rankings were made: This is a research-based editorial comparison of current Chrome Web Store listings and official project information, not a report of hands-on installation, measured performance testing, or laboratory eye-comfort testing. Ratings, user counts, versions, permissions, and update dates can change.

Quick recommendations

Extension Best for Main strength Main trade-off
Dark Reader Most people Mature, broad coverage with strong controls Page rewriting can create visual defects or affect performance on some sites
Night Eye Images, PDFs, and visual tuning Smart conversion, media preservation, PDF support, warmth controls The free Lite tier is limited to up to five selected websites
Midnight Lizard Accessibility and deep customization Per-site schemes, contrast, hue, grayscale, scheduling, and blue-light controls More complicated than a basic on/off switch
Turn Off the Lights YouTube and video sites Cinematic video dimming plus a broader night mode Its many video and page features require broader permissions
Deluminate Lightweight luminance inversion Inverts brightness while attempting to preserve colors and images The developer warns that some pages may slow down
Dark Mode for Chrome A simple toggle Straightforward page darkening and night-shift positioning Less established and less configurable than the leading options
Dark Theme for Google Google Search and Google services Focused Google-domain styling with custom colors and CSS It is not a universal dark-mode tool and has an older listed update

1. Dark Reader — best overall

Dark Reader is the safest default recommendation for a general Chrome user who wants websites to become dark without spending much time configuring them. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes dark themes generated for websites on the fly, with controls for brightness, contrast, sepia, and fonts. You can also enable or disable it per site, synchronize it with the system’s dark-mode preference, and let it detect websites that already provide a native dark theme.

The research snapshot showed approximately 6 million Chrome users, a 4.7 out of 5 rating, and version 4.9.129 updated July 15, 2026. Those figures are useful indicators of adoption and maintenance at the time of research, not a substitute for independent performance testing.

Why choose it: It has the broadest all-around feature set in this comparison and is the least risky starting point if you read many unrelated websites. The per-site controls are particularly useful because no automatic darkening method renders every page perfectly.

Important boundaries: Dark Reader’s official help documentation says it cannot modify Chrome’s own settings, the New Tab page, or the Chrome Web Store. Separate permission may also be needed for incognito windows or local files. If a page looks wrong, Dark Reader’s support guidance recommends trying another rendering mode or excluding that site.

Dark Reader also states that it does not insert advertisements or collect and transmit browsing data. That is the developer’s privacy statement; you should still install the exact listing you intend to use and review the permissions shown by Chrome.

Best for: Most people, especially readers who want a mature general-purpose extension with broad controls.

Watch-out: Because it rewrites page appearance, a complicated website can show incorrect colors, misplaced visual elements, or slower rendering. A site exclusion is often a better fix than trying to force one global setting to work everywhere.

2. Night Eye — best for PDFs and visual controls

Night Eye is a strong alternative when image handling, PDF reading, and visual fine-tuning matter more than having the simplest possible interface. Its listing describes analyzing web pages rather than merely applying a basic color inversion. It aims to preserve important images, videos, and other media while offering controls for brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth, and dimming.

Night Eye supports per-site settings, scheduling, synchronization with the system or browser color scheme, and dark mode for PDFs opened in Chrome. That combination makes it especially appealing to students, researchers, and anyone who spends long periods switching between ordinary web pages and documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing showed a 4.5 out of 5 rating, roughly 300,000 Chrome users, version 6.1.0, and an update dated July 19, 2026. Its free Night Eye Lite tier is described as supporting up to five chosen websites. The listing also identifies paid Pro, Pro Max, and Ultimate options, so Night Eye should not be described as universally free. Plan names, limits, and pricing can change, so check the current listing before choosing it for broad use.

Night Eye’s privacy disclosure says that the extension does not sell user data or use third-party analytics inside the extension. It also explains why the extension needs permission to read and change website content: it must analyze and restyle the pages you visit.

3. Midnight Lizard — best for accessibility and granular customization

Midnight Lizard is the most customization-heavy option on this list. It supports predefined and user-created color schemes, different schemes for different websites, and detailed controls for brightness, saturation, contrast, and hue. It also includes blue-light filtering, high-contrast and grayscale options, scheduling, keyboard shortcuts, PDF and local-file support, synchronization, URL-pattern rules, and blacklist or whitelist operation.

One particularly useful feature is the ability to preserve original image hues rather than indiscriminately inverting them. That can matter when color conveys information or when photographs and diagrams become unpleasant after a conventional inversion.

The Chrome Web Store snapshot showed version 11.0.0, updated January 2, 2026, with a 4.7 out of 5 rating and approximately 40,000 Chrome users. The smaller user count compared with Dark Reader does not by itself indicate poor quality; Midnight Lizard is aimed at users who value control over simplicity.

Best for: Readers with accessibility requirements, people who need stronger contrast or grayscale controls, and anyone who wants different visual rules for different websites.

Watch-out: Its large settings surface can be excessive if all you want is a dark toggle. Like other page-level extensions, it cannot style every Chrome-controlled surface. Its listing specifically notes limitations involving the New Tab page, tabs, toolbar, Chrome Web Store, and browser settings. A separate Chrome browser theme is needed for the browser chrome itself.

4. Turn Off the Lights — best for video-first browsing

Turn Off the Lights is primarily a video-focused dimming extension. Its signature feature fades the surrounding page so that a video remains the visual focus, which is useful on YouTube and other video sites. The listing identifies support for services including YouTube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, and Twitch.

It also includes a full Night Mode that can transform websites into personalized dark themes. Its page-level features include black-and-white themes, whitelists and blacklists, scheduled activation, image dimming, and custom background, text, hyperlink, and button colors. In other words, it is more than a cinema-style overlay, although readers interested only in article reading may find the extra video controls unnecessary.

The research snapshot showed approximately 1 million Chrome users and a 4.6 out of 5 rating from about 33,500 ratings. The project describes the extension as free and open source, using the GPLv2 license, with a public GitHub project.

Permissions deserve a deliberate review: Because the extension detects videos and can script pages, manage navigation timing, take screenshots, and operate across URLs, its permissions are broader than those of a narrowly scoped theme toggle. The Chrome Web Store listing explains the stated purpose of its major permissions. Broad permissions are a reason to understand what you are installing, not evidence by themselves that the extension is unsafe.

Best for: YouTube viewers and anyone who wants both cinematic dimming and a wider night-mode feature.

Watch-out: If your main activity is reading ordinary pages, Dark Reader or Night Eye may provide a more focused experience with fewer video-oriented controls.

5. Deluminate — best lightweight luminance-inversion option

Deluminate takes a deliberately different technical approach. Rather than fully restyling every page, it inverts the luminance of a website while attempting not to change its colors. The listing presents it as a way to make bright sites easier to view, with dark-mode autodetection and different inversion modes based on URL paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This approach can appeal to readers who prefer a small, focused tool and want to preserve much of a site’s existing color identity. It is not the same as a carefully designed dark theme, however, and its results will vary with the way a page is rendered.

The listing showed version 1.1.0, updated May 9, 2026, a 4.3 out of 5 rating from roughly 1,000 ratings, and approximately 30,000 users.

Best for: People who specifically want luminance inversion rather than a heavily customized page restyle.

Watch-out: Deluminate’s own listing warns that the way rendered-page luminance is inverted can cause noticeable slowdowns for some users. Do not assume that it will preserve every image perfectly or perform equally well on every page.

6. Dark Mode for Chrome by darkmodepro.com — best simple alternative

Dark Mode for Chrome by darkmodepro.com is aimed at users who want a conventional one-click dark-mode control without the extensive configuration surface of Dark Reader or Midnight Lizard. Its listing describes page-level darkening for websites such as Gmail, Google Docs, Office Online, and GitHub. It also offers a night-shift mode and can control sites that already have built-in dark themes.

The research snapshot showed a 4.5 out of 5 rating, approximately 50,000 Chrome users, and attribution to darkmodepro.com, whose publisher is identified as the owner of the listed website.

Includes 1-year manufacturer warranty for defects.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT COMFORT FOR ALL-DAY WEAR — At just 24g, the flexible TR90 frame and shatter-resistant polycarbonate lenses stay comfortable through long gaming sessions, work-from-home days, or travel, with a unisex Wayfarer silhouette that fits most face shapes.
  • ANTI-GLARE & UV PROTECTION, READY TO GO — Built for computer screens, gaming, and everyday glare, each pair ships with a protective case and anti-fog cloth so you're ready anywhere you need relief.

Best for: Someone who values a simple toggle and does not need advanced per-site schemes, accessibility rules, or extensive rendering controls.

Watch-out: The listing provides less detail about rendering modes and advanced controls than the leading alternatives. It is therefore better positioned as a simple option than as the most mature or configurable extension in the group. Check the exact publisher and current permissions because similarly named Chrome extensions may exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Dark Theme for Google — best for Google Search

Dark Theme for Google is a narrower choice for people whose main problem is the brightness of Google pages. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes support for Google Search, Google Images, Translate, Contacts, Calendar, and Messages. It includes custom colors, automatic activation periods, custom CSS, and the ability to follow the system’s preferred color scheme.

The listing showed version 0.6.3, updated March 2, 2023, with a 4.0 out of 5 rating from about 320 ratings and approximately 40,000 users. It explicitly states that the project is independent and is not related to Google.

Best for: Users who mainly want Google Search and related Google services darkened without applying a universal page-rewriting extension across the rest of the web.

Watch-out: The older listed update date makes it a weaker recommendation for anyone looking for an actively updated, all-purpose dark-mode tool. It belongs here as a focused Google-domain option, not as a replacement for Dark Reader or Night Eye everywhere.

How to choose the right extension

  • Choose Dark Reader if you want the best all-around starting point and broad controls.
  • Choose Night Eye if PDF reading, image preservation, warmth, dimming, or saturation controls are especially important.
  • Choose Midnight Lizard if accessibility-oriented controls, high contrast, grayscale, or detailed per-site rules are your priority.
  • Choose Turn Off the Lights if video viewing is central to your browsing.
  • Choose Deluminate if you prefer a compact luminance-inversion approach and accept the potential performance cost.
  • Choose Dark Mode for Chrome if a simple toggle matters more than deep configuration.
  • Choose Dark Theme for Google if you mainly need Google Search and related services darkened.

Chrome’s built-in dark mode versus an extension

Chrome’s appearance setting and a webpage-darkening extension solve different problems. On current desktop Chrome releases, the browser appearance controls are generally found under Settings > Appearance, where a light, dark, or system-following mode may be available; exact labels can vary by Chrome version and operating system.

That setting affects Chrome’s interface, but it does not reliably force every website to adopt dark colors. An extension can inspect page content and inject or apply styles, which is why it can affect ordinary websites. The limitation is that extensions do not control every Chrome-owned surface. Dark Reader and Midnight Lizard specifically document limitations involving Chrome settings, the New Tab page, the Chrome Web Store, and parts of the browser interface.

If you want the tabs, toolbar, and other browser chrome to look dark, use a Chrome browser theme as a separate layer. A webpage-darkening extension is not a substitute for that theme.

How to install and configure one safely

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the exact extension name and publisher. This matters particularly for generic names such as Dark Mode for Chrome.
  2. Read the listing and permissions. Confirm the publisher, privacy disclosure, recent update information, and the sites or features the extension says it supports.
  3. Select Add to Chrome, then confirm the installation when Chrome displays its permission prompt.
  4. Pin the extension by opening Chrome’s puzzle-piece Extensions menu and selecting the pin icon. This makes the extension’s controls easy to reach.
  5. Start with one extension only. Enable it on a few frequently used sites before changing global settings or granting optional access.
  6. Configure exceptions. Keep a site’s native dark mode when it works well, and exclude or whitelist pages that render incorrectly.
  7. Grant sensitive optional access only when needed. In chrome://extensions, open the extension’s Details page to review controls such as access in incognito mode or access to local file URLs. The labels can vary slightly by Chrome release.

Do not install several page-rewriting dark-mode extensions at the same time. Their injected styles can conflict, making it difficult to identify which extension caused a broken layout, incorrect colors, or slow rendering. Dark Reader’s own guidance recommends disabling similar extensions when troubleshooting.

Privacy and permissions: what to check

Most dark-mode extensions need some ability to read or change website content. That access is technically necessary if the extension is going to inspect page colors, inject styles, detect media, or apply per-site rules. It is still a meaningful permission, so compare the developer’s stated purpose with the features you actually need.

  • Dark Reader: The project says it does not insert ads or collect or transmit browsing data. It may request separate access for incognito windows or local files.
  • Night Eye: Its privacy disclosure says it does not sell user data or use third-party analytics inside the extension, while explaining that page access is needed for analysis and restyling.
  • Turn Off the Lights: Its video detection, page scripting, navigation, screenshot, and all-URL features explain why its permissions are broader than those of a basic theme switch. Review the purpose descriptions in the listing rather than treating the permission breadth as an automatic safety verdict.

For every extension, install the exact publisher-listed item, read Chrome’s permission prompt, and avoid granting incognito or local-file access unless you genuinely need the extension to work in those contexts. A privacy statement is useful evidence, but it does not remove the need for ordinary extension hygiene.

Common problems and practical fixes

A page looks worse in dark mode

Turn the extension off for that site first. If you are using Dark Reader, try a different rendering mode before excluding the page. Some websites already have a native dark theme that works better than an injected one, while others use unusual graphics, embedded widgets, or fixed colors that do not adapt cleanly.

Images, diagrams, or video colors look wrong

Try Night Eye if media preservation is a major concern, or Midnight Lizard if preserving original image hues and applying a custom scheme is important. No extension can guarantee perfect handling for every image format, canvas, embedded frame, or video player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The extension makes Chrome slower

Disable it on heavy sites and compare the result. Page rewriting can add work during rendering, and Deluminate’s listing specifically warns that luminance inversion may produce noticeable slowdowns for some users. Avoid stacking multiple extensions that all modify page colors.

A PDF stays bright

Use an extension whose listing explicitly includes PDF support. Night Eye and Midnight Lizard both describe PDF support, while the other choices are better treated as ordinary webpage tools unless their current listings say otherwise. Open the PDF, pin the extension, and check whether its site or file-access permission is enabled when Chrome’s built-in viewer is involved.

The New Tab page or Chrome Web Store stays light

That is an expected limitation for several page-level extensions, not necessarily an installation failure. Use a Chrome browser theme for browser chrome and accept that some Chrome-owned pages cannot be restyled by an extension.

Optional comfort accessories

Dark mode changes webpage colors, but it cannot remove glare from a glossy display or change the physical lighting around your desk. Readers who are experimenting with late-night browsing may independently compare blue light blocking glasses as an optional comfort accessory. They are not required for any extension, do not improve extension compatibility, and should not be treated as a guaranteed or clinically proven solution. Adjusting room lighting, display brightness, viewing distance, and breaks may matter just as much for personal comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Chrome’s built-in dark mode make every website dark?

No. Chrome’s appearance setting mainly changes the browser interface and depends on whether individual websites support dark styling. A page-level extension is needed when you want to restyle sites that do not provide a suitable native dark theme.

Which Chrome dark-mode extension is best for PDFs?

Night Eye and Midnight Lizard are the strongest choices from this comparison because their Chrome Web Store listings explicitly describe PDF support. You may also need to check the extension’s file-access permission when working with local documents.

Can I use two dark-mode extensions together?

It is better not to. Multiple extensions that rewrite page colors can conflict and cause incorrect colors, broken layouts, or slower rendering. Disable similar extensions while troubleshooting.

Why does a dark-mode extension need access to website content?

It needs to inspect pages and inject or apply styles, detect media, or enforce per-site rules. Review the exact publisher, privacy disclosure, and permission prompt, and grant optional incognito or local-file access only when you need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which extension is best for YouTube?

Turn Off the Lights is the specialist choice because it can dim the page around a video and also offers a broader Night Mode. Dark Reader and the other page-focused tools are better suited to general reading.

The Bottom Line

Start with Dark Reader if you want one dependable general-purpose choice. Pick Night Eye for PDFs and visual tuning, Midnight Lizard for accessibility and granular per-site control, and Turn Off the Lights for video-first browsing. Deluminate, Dark Mode for Chrome, and Dark Theme for Google remain useful narrower alternatives, but each involves a clearer trade-off in approach, maturity, or coverage.
