Windows can show several different meanings of “total storage”: the free space on C:, the full capacity of a formatted volume, or the capacity of the physical SSD or hard drive. Those figures are not always identical.

For a quick check, use File Explorer. For the laptop’s actual installed disk capacity—including hidden partitions and unallocated space—use Disk Management or Get-Disk in PowerShell.

What the storage figures mean

Figure What it represents Best method
Free space Unused space currently available on a drive File Explorer or fsutil
Volume capacity The size of a formatted partition such as C: Drive Properties or Get-Volume
Physical disk capacity The size of the installed SSD or hard drive, including partitioned and unallocated areas Disk Management or Get-Disk

A laptop advertised with a 256 GB drive will not normally show exactly 256 GB in Windows. Manufacturers use decimal units, where 256 GB equals 256,000,000,000 bytes. Windows commonly displays the equivalent using binary-style units, so the figure is roughly 238 GB before partitions, formatting, recovery data, and other overhead are considered.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open File Explorer. You can press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC in the navigation pane.
  3. Under Devices and drives, locate OS (C:) or another drive.
  4. Right-click the drive and select Properties.
  5. On the General tab, read Used space, Free space, and Capacity.

The drive tiles in This PC primarily show available space. They do not, by themselves, provide the full capacity figure. Open Properties to see it.

This method reports the selected formatted volume. If Disk 0 contains a recovery partition, an EFI system partition, another data partition, or unallocated space, the capacity of C: will be smaller than the total physical disk.

2. Use Windows Settings

Settings provides a storage breakdown as well as a drive-level view in current Windows 11 versions.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Go to System → Storage.
  3. Review the categories, such as installed apps, temporary files, system files, and other content.

For disk and volume details, go to System → Storage → Advanced storage settings → Disks & volumes. Select a disk or volume, expand Properties, and review its size and related details.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select System → Storage.

The main Storage page is useful for seeing what is consuming space, but its category totals are not a definitive physical-disk capacity report. Windows may take time to calculate the categories, and the figures can change while the analysis completes.

OneDrive is another reason the numbers can appear confusing. With Files On-Demand enabled, a file can be visible in File Explorer while only a placeholder is stored locally. Its online size is not necessarily the amount of local disk space it uses.

3. Find the physical disk size with Disk Management

Use Disk Management when “total storage” means the capacity of the installed SSD or hard drive rather than just the C: volume.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Disk Management.
  3. Look at the lower pane. Windows lists physical drives as Disk 0, Disk 1, and so on.
  4. Read the size shown in the header for each disk.

The partitions and volumes belonging to a disk appear beside or within its disk entry. Disk Management can show:

  • The physical disk’s total capacity
  • The size of C: and other formatted volumes
  • Recovery and system partitions
  • Unallocated space
  • Additional physical disks

For example, Disk 0 might have a capacity of approximately 476 GB, while C: is smaller because some of the disk is assigned to system and recovery partitions. If unallocated space exists, it is part of the physical disk but not currently available through a normal drive letter.

You can also open the tool directly:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type diskmgmt.msc.
  3. Select OK.

4. List formatted volumes with PowerShell

Get-Volume reports the size and remaining space of formatted volumes. It is useful when you want a compact list rather than opening each drive’s Properties window.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open PowerShell. Standard PowerShell is sufficient for this command.
  2. Run:

Get-Volume | Select-Object DriveLetter, FileSystemLabel, FileSystem, Size, SizeRemaining

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The output includes:

  • DriveLetter: the assigned letter, such as C or D
  • FileSystemLabel: the volume’s name
  • FileSystem: such as NTFS or exFAT
  • Size: the volume’s total size in bytes
  • SizeRemaining: the currently free space in bytes

A blank DriveLetter does not necessarily mean the volume is missing. Some formatted volumes do not have a drive letter. Also, Get-Volume does not report unallocated space or the full physical-disk capacity, so it is not a complete hardware inventory.

5. List physical disks with PowerShell

Use Get-Disk when you need the actual capacity of installed physical disks, including disks that have no drive letter or mounted volume.

  1. Open PowerShell.
  2. Run:

Get-Disk | Select-Object Number, FriendlyName, BusType, PartitionStyle, OperationalStatus, Size

Important columns include:

Column Meaning
Number Windows’ disk number, such as Disk 0
FriendlyName The drive model reported to Windows
BusType The connection type, such as NVMe, SATA, or USB
PartitionStyle Usually GPT or MBR
OperationalStatus Whether Windows considers the disk online and operational
Size The physical disk capacity in bytes

This is the most useful command-line method for answering “How large is the installed SSD?” Its Size value still will not match the usable size of C: exactly because partitions, recovery space, file-system overhead, and unallocated space affect the volume figure.

6. Check a volume from Command Prompt with fsutil

fsutil is a convenient command-line check for the free-space information on a particular volume.

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run:

fsutil volume diskfree C:

Replace C: with another drive letter when necessary:

fsutil volume diskfree D:

The command queries the selected volume and reports its free-space values. It is useful for troubleshooting or checking a volume without opening File Explorer, but it is not a physical-disk inventory tool. It does not reveal hidden partitions, other volumes, or unallocated space. Run it separately for each drive letter you need to inspect.

Why the numbers do not always add up

Even after checking the correct screen, several figures may differ:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Manufacturer units: A drive maker’s decimal GB/TB figures are displayed differently from Windows’ binary-style calculation.
  • Separate partitions: The operating-system volume may not occupy the entire physical disk.
  • Recovery and EFI partitions: These may be hidden from normal File Explorer views but still consume disk capacity.
  • Unallocated space: It belongs to the disk but is not part of a usable formatted volume.
  • Protected data: Paging files, hibernation data, restore points, the Recycle Bin, reserved storage, and restricted system folders can make folder totals differ from the volume’s used-space figure.
  • Cloud placeholders: OneDrive Files On-Demand can show files that are not fully stored locally.

Adding the visible folder sizes is therefore not a reliable way to calculate used disk space.

Which method should you use?

Your goal Use this
See the capacity and free space of C: File Explorer → This PC → drive Properties
See what is consuming Windows storage Settings → System → Storage
Inspect partitions, recovery areas, and unallocated space Disk Management
List all formatted volumes in a script-friendly format Get-Volume
List all installed physical disks Get-Disk
Check free space on one volume from Command Prompt fsutil volume diskfree C:

Do not use Disk Cleanup as a capacity checker. In Windows 11, Microsoft’s cleanup categories are under Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations. These options can remove temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps, but they do not change what the physical disk’s capacity is.

Be cautious when deleting a previous Windows installation. Removing Windows.old through Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup removes the normal rollback option to the earlier Windows version.

FAQ

How do I see the total storage on my Windows laptop?

For the physical disk’s capacity, right-click Start, open Disk Management, and read the size beside Disk 0 or another disk. For the capacity of the Windows volume only, open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click OS (C:), and choose Properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does This PC show less storage than my laptop’s advertised capacity?

This PC’s drive tiles primarily show free space, not full capacity. In addition, manufacturers use decimal GB, while Windows commonly displays the equivalent in binary-style units. Partitions, recovery data, and formatting reduce the usable volume further.

Does Get-Volume show the whole SSD?

No. Get-Volume reports formatted volumes and their free space. Use Get-Disk to report physical disks, including capacity that is assigned to hidden partitions or left unallocated.

Why is C: smaller than Disk 0?

Disk 0 is the physical drive. C: is only one volume on that drive. EFI, recovery, additional partitions, file-system overhead, or unallocated space can account for the difference.

Is fsutil volume diskfree a storage-capacity command?

It checks free-space information for a specified volume, such as C:. It does not inventory physical disks or show hidden partitions and unallocated space.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use File Explorer drive Properties for the capacity of C:, Settings → System → Storage for a usage breakdown, and Disk Management or Get-Disk for the laptop’s actual physical disk capacity. The last two methods are the reliable choices when partitions and hidden storage areas matter.
