A broken laptop may still have useful life, but the right next step depends on what failed. A machine with a dead screen may still run; one with a failed motherboard cannot serve files or print. Diagnose it first, then choose among repair, single-purpose reuse, parts recovery, refurbishment, or recycling. These six ideas are options—not projects every laptop can handle.
First, identify what still works
Note whether the laptop powers on, boots, connects to a network, and has working components such as its display, storage, keyboard, and ports. Check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and support guidance for the exact model. For a Chromebook, Google provides model-specific troubleshooting and an Auto Update Expiration schedule; Chromebooks released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates, while schedules for older models vary. Check the individual device rather than assuming it is still supported: Google’s Chromebook update guidance, troubleshooting steps, and manufacturer support directory.
Repair cost, parts availability, software support, battery condition, and local reuse options all affect whether a project makes sense. If you are unsure about the fault—or see battery swelling—stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair service for help.
Six ways to give an old laptop another use
1. Repair it and keep using it
A failed component does not always mean the whole computer is finished. If a repair restores a safe, supported machine at a sensible cost, use it for your regular tasks or give it a narrower role. Compare the repair estimate and parts availability with the laptop’s age and software-support status before spending money. Repair instructions and replacement parts are model-specific; ASUS, for example, describes a self-replacement process using authentic parts, tools, and manuals, but that does not mean every model is suitable for do-it-yourself repair: ASUS Self Replacement Solution.

2. Set it up as a print server
If the laptop still boots and can connect to your home network and printer, it may be able to handle printing for other devices. The exact setup depends on the operating system, printer, and network. This is a single-task reuse option—not a workaround for a failed motherboard or a computer that cannot stay running. UNEP/Convention guidance identifies print-server use as one possible role for equipment no longer suited to general use: guidance on testing, refurbishment, and repair of used computing equipment.
3. Use it as a file server
A working laptop with network access and storage may be repurposed to hold files that other devices can reach. Choose this only if the machine can run reliably and you can manage access and updates for its operating system. A single old laptop is not a backup plan: keep another copy of important files on a separate device or service. UNEP/Convention guidance also lists file-server use as a possible single-task role for equipment no longer suited to general use.

4. Reuse working parts
If the computer itself is not worth repairing, working components may still be useful in another repair. This route suits people who can identify compatible parts or can hand the machine to a repair or refurbishment service. Compatibility varies by model, and a part that looks similar may not fit or work in another laptop. Microsoft includes refurbishment and parts harvesting among end-of-life management options: Microsoft’s end-of-life management guidance. Broken or unusable parts should go through an appropriate recycling route, not be treated as usable spares.
5. Explore a second-monitor conversion
If the laptop’s display panel still works but the rest of the machine does not, a conversion may be possible. It is not reliably a plug-and-play project: laptop panels and their connections vary, and a conversion may require a compatible controller and careful disassembly. An older Hillsboro High Schools handout hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Solution Center mentions the idea, but it is not a general compatibility guide: the handout. Research the exact panel model and do not buy an adapter unless compatibility is established.

6. Donate or send it to a refurbishment program
A working laptop—or one a program is equipped to repair—may be useful to another person. Ask the recipient or local reuse program what models and conditions it accepts; requirements differ. The UK government’s IT Reuse for Good Charter guidance, updated 2 October 2026, promotes reuse-first handling of IT assets and supports refurbishment and donation. It cites an estimate that around 1.7 million UK households do not have a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer; that figure is specific to the UK, not a global count: UK IT Reuse for Good Charter guidance. Microsoft also describes refurbishment and its Refurbished PC program in its end-of-life guidance.
Prepare the laptop before handing it off
- Back up files you still need. Copy accessible documents and other important data to a separate, trusted location.
- Sign out of accounts and erase the storage. Use the appropriate reset or secure-erasure process for the operating system and storage device. If the data is unusually sensitive, use an appropriate professional destruction service rather than improvised drive destruction.
- Check the battery before moving or storing the laptop. Do not use or charge a swollen battery. HP advises that lithium-ion batteries should not go in household trash or curbside recycling; take a swollen battery to a recycler and check local handling instructions. Recycling and take-back availability varies by location: HP’s computer recycling guidance.
- Confirm the destination accepts it. Ask a donation, repair, or recycling program about its condition, model, and battery requirements before dropping it off.
When none of the reuse ideas fits
If the laptop cannot be repaired economically, cannot run a suitable single task, or has no usable parts, use a responsible electronics-recycling route. Do not put the computer or its lithium-ion battery in household trash or curbside recycling. The best option depends on what still works, whether the data can be safely removed, and which local take-back services accept the device.
