The practical starting point is to choose one of three routes: download your own information, use an authorized app and permitted API fields for a Page or business workflow, or qualify for Meta’s research tools. From there, you can summarize activity, compare posts, track engagement, or study public-interest themes without pretending that a limited dataset represents all of Facebook.
Choose an authorized source before writing Python
These routes provide different data and are not interchangeable. Access, available fields, and workflow can change, so check current official documentation before building around a particular API or research platform.

Meta’s 2023 announcement said the Content Library and API provide “near real-time public content” from specified Facebook Pages, Posts, Groups, and Events, alongside certain Instagram content. That statement describes Meta’s research tools, not what an ordinary developer or Page administrator can retrieve. Public visibility alone does not establish API permission.
For API work, Meta’s repository identifies its Business SDK as a Python SDK for Marketing APIs; it is not a universal client for personal Facebook data. The repository describes registering an app, obtaining a token, installing the package with pip install facebook_business, and initializing the SDK. It also recommends App Secret Proof for server API calls and notes that batch calls still count individually toward rate limits. Keep credentials out of source code and logs, and follow current Meta security guidance. See the SDK repository.

Older third-party Python SDK documentation illustrates the general Graph API model of objects, fields, and paginated connections, but its dated examples—including API version 2.12—should not be treated as current endpoint or permission instructions: Facebook SDK for Python API reference.
1. Summarize your own exported activity
Route: your own information export. After downloading the files available through Meta’s account tools, use Python to inspect what is actually present, then count categories, sort timestamps, or chart activity. Meta’s 2020 description establishes that self-service access tools exist; it does not establish today’s interface steps or export schema.

Begin by listing the downloaded files and examining a small sample. If a file is JSON, for example, inspect its top-level structure before assuming particular keys exist. Then choose an analysis that matches the fields in your copy, such as counting records by date or grouping an available activity category. Export contents can vary, so do not build a script around a fixed schema until you have checked your files.
2. Find patterns in Page post timing
Route: authorized API access to relevant Page data. If the permitted response includes post timestamps and engagement measures, convert timestamps to the Page’s relevant timezone and compare activity across posting times—such as hour or day of week.

Use only the fields returned to your authorized account. A timing chart can show when posts in your dataset appeared to receive more engagement, but it cannot establish that the posting time caused the difference. Audience, topic, distribution, and other factors may also vary.
3. Compare post formats or content themes
Route: a permitted dataset containing the necessary post and engagement fields, obtained through an authorized API or eligible research access. Group records using a simple, transparent label: format, campaign, or a hand-coded theme. Compare the resulting engagement distributions rather than relying on a single example or average.

Record which fields were available and how labels were assigned. A category such as “video” is useful only if the dataset supports that distinction; a theme label should be defined consistently. The Business SDK is an access client, not a guarantee that a particular app can retrieve every field.

Route: an authorized API or research dataset that actually returns the measures you want to chart. Normalize dates, aggregate the returned values by day or week, and visualize the series. Possible measures include reactions, shares, comments, or views only where those fields are available to your route.

Meta’s announcement describes reactions, shares, comments, and post view counts in the context of its Content Library and API for research. Do not assume that this list is available through an ordinary Page API connection. Note the dataset, period, field definitions, and any gaps beside the chart; a change in observed counts is not by itself evidence of why engagement changed.
5. Explore public-interest conversation themes
Route: eligible researcher access to Meta Content Library or API. In supported research contexts, Meta has described access to public content and public comments. Researchers can use Python to organize text into aggregate themes, track how those themes appear over time, or compare broad patterns without identifying individual commenters.
Meta’s November 2023 announcement, updated in 2024, describes access for eligible academic or nonprofit researchers through ICPSR. It is not a general developer entitlement, and supported content or eligibility may change. The same announcement says CrowdTangle would no longer be available after August 14, 2024; do not treat older CrowdTangle workflows as a current access route. 6. Compare public sources or campaigns carefully
Route: eligible research data or other legitimately collected public data. Normalize dates and category labels across the sources you are allowed to use, then compare how content or available engagement measures vary by source or campaign. Keep provenance visible: identify where the records came from, which fields were compared, and the time period covered.

For context, Meta said a collaboration with Raj Chetty and Harvard’s Opportunity Insights Program used information from 21 billion friendships to study drivers of economic mobility in the United States. That is a description of that named research project, not a measure of Facebook’s current total friendship graph or data ordinary users can obtain.
