The best FTP client for WordPress depends on your computer, your host’s supported secure protocol, and what you need to do with site files. For routine desktop transfers, choose an app that supports the host’s SFTP or FTPS connection; avoid plain FTP when an encrypted option is available. WordPress.org notes that plain FTP sends files and passwords in clear text: WordPress.org’s file-transfer guidance.
How to choose a WordPress file-transfer client
WordPress files can be managed through a host’s browser-based file manager or a desktop FTP client. A file manager can be enough for a quick, one-off task such as uploading one file or checking a server directory. A desktop app is more useful for repeat transfers, whole folders, transfer queues, interrupted uploads, or synchronizing local and remote folders.
Choose based on these practical criteria:
- Operating system: Check that the app supports Windows, macOS, or Linux as needed.
- Host protocol: Ask your host whether it supports SFTP or FTPS and confirm the exact connection details. SFTP and FTPS are different protocols; selecting the wrong one can prevent a connection.
- Workflow: Consider whether you need synchronization, scheduled transfers, editor integration, or simply a way to upload files.
- Cost and edition: Free and paid editions may differ, and prices can change. Verify current terms with the vendor.
WordPress.org recommends using SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) or FTPS (FTP over TLS) instead of plain FTP whenever the host supports one. Do not assume an app marked “FTP” necessarily uses an encrypted connection; choose the specific protocol your host provides.

WPBeginner also makes subjective judgments about ease, speed, and reliability. The comparison is a shortlist, not a controlled, like-for-like performance benchmark, so those claims should not be treated as measured results. Read the full WPBeginner comparison for its descriptions, then check the chosen vendor for current product details.
WordPress.com SFTP: what FileZilla and Cyberduck users need to know
WordPress.com’s SFTP instructions, last reviewed August 11, 2026, say SFTP is available on Business and Commerce plans; Business-plan users may need to activate it. This eligibility detail applies to WordPress.com and should not be generalized to other WordPress hosts. For a self-hosted site, the hosting provider determines whether SFTP or FTPS is available and supplies the credentials.

Rank #3
- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.
- FTP Automation and Synchronization
- Back up the site files and database before a core-file replacement, bulk upload, or deletion.
- Confirm the remote directory is the intended WordPress installation before changing files.
- If you need a hidden file such as
.htaccess, configure the client to show hidden files. - Avoid changing file permissions unless you have a specific reason. Incorrect permissions can stop WordPress, a theme, a plugin, or the web server from reading or writing files.
For a one-off upload or small emergency change, a host’s file manager may be sufficient. For repeat or bulk work, a desktop client’s queue, folder handling, or synchronization tools can make the task easier to manage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
- Windows: Consider WinSCP or Free FTP; WS_FTP Professional is a paid option if its scheduled-transfer workflow suits your needs.
- Mac: Consider Cyberduck for a free cross-platform choice or Transmit for the syncing and Finder integration described in the comparison.
- Linux, or a mixed-device setup: FileZilla is the only option in this six-client list whose reported platform coverage includes Linux.
- WordPress.com SFTP: The official setup guide covers FileZilla and Cyberduck.
Whichever app you choose, compatibility with your host’s encrypted protocol matters more than a universal “best” label. Check protocol, credentials, and current product details before connecting.
