Short answer: For most U.S. small businesses, Square Online is the best free ecommerce website builder because its $0 monthly plan combines a hosted storefront, checkout, inventory, online ordering, and Square point-of-sale integration. Choose Shift4Shop if you want deeper ecommerce features and are willing to use Shift4 Payments; Payhip for digital products; Big Cartel for up to five products; Freewebstore for an unlimited catalog; and Odoo Online if ecommerce is part of a larger business-management system.

These recommendations mean no recurring platform subscription, not a completely cost-free business. Payment processing, platform transaction fees, domains, shipping, taxes, paid apps, refunds, chargebacks, and premium features can still cost money. The comparison below reflects provider information checked for August 10, 2026, with the United States as the default market. Availability, payment rates, taxes, domains, and plan features can differ by country.

Quick comparison

Platform Best for What is free Main cost or limitation Custom-domain result
Square Online Most small businesses and retailers using Square POS Hosted store, checkout, catalog, inventory, online ordering, and a Square subdomain Payment processing is required; advanced shipping and custom domains require an upgrade Free square.site address; custom domain requires Square Online Plus or Premium
Shift4Shop U.S. merchants wanting a full-featured store at $0 monthly Unlimited products, orders, bandwidth, staff, hosting, features, API access, and support Free plan is U.S.-only and requires Shift4 Payments Domain registration is listed with the plan; verify registration and renewal terms
Freewebstore Large catalogs without a monthly subscription Hosting, SSL, unlimited products, storage, and bandwidth 2.5% platform fee on every sale, branding, and reduced marketing and management tools Existing domains can be connected, but the domain itself may cost money
Payhip Downloads, courses, memberships, and creator businesses Store builder, unlimited products and revenue, and digital and physical product support 5% Payhip fee plus Stripe or PayPal processing fees Available if you purchase a domain separately
Big Cartel Artists and makers with very small catalogs Five product listings, checkout, variants, basic design, stats, and tax automation Five-listing limit, one displayed image per product, and no custom domain on Gold Custom domain is a paid-plan feature
Odoo Online Ecommerce connected to broader business software One App Free plan, unlimited users, and hosted Odoo Online Installing additional apps can move the database to a paid plan; setup is complex One-year domain offer may apply under Odoo’s eligibility rules

Platform fees and payment-processing fees are different. A $0 subscription never automatically means $0 per order.

What free ecommerce website builder actually means

There are several products marketed as free, but they are not interchangeable:

  1. Free hosted store: The provider supplies hosting, SSL, storefront software, and checkout without a recurring platform subscription. The six platforms in this article belong primarily in this category.
  2. Free ecommerce software: The software costs nothing, but you still pay for hosting, a domain, backups, security, maintenance, and possibly extensions. WooCommerce and PrestaShop fit here.
  3. Free trial: You can build or operate a store for a limited time, after which a paid plan is required. Shopify is an example, not a free-forever option.
  4. Free storefront or payment link: You can show products or accept payments, but may not receive a complete standalone ecommerce website with inventory, shipping, customer records, and order management.
  5. Free marketplace account: You list products on another company’s marketplace. That can produce sales, but it is not the same as owning a branded store and customer experience.

This article focuses on stores that can remain on a $0 monthly platform plan. Each still has trade-offs, and several charge a fee whenever you make a sale.

1. Square Online: best overall for most small businesses

Best for: Local retailers, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, boutiques, salons, pop-up sellers, and any business that sells both online and in person.

Square Online’s Free plan provides a hosted website builder, product listings, checkout, online ordering, inventory, SEO tools, and Square payment processing without a monthly subscription. Square says its online store supports unlimited products and variants. A free square.site subdomain is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest reason to choose Square is the connection between the online catalog and Square’s in-person POS system. A retailer can manage products, orders, and inventory in one ecosystem instead of maintaining a separate online catalog. Pickup and local delivery are available on the free plan, which makes Square practical for restaurants, florists, bakeries, and local shops.

Square’s real cost

Square charges payment-processing fees when you accept an online payment. Its current U.S. support fee table lists 3.3% + $0.30 for online or invoice payments on Square Free. However, Square’s online-store marketing page still displays 2.9% + $0.30 in some pricing copy. That is a material difference, so check the rate shown in your Square Dashboard or merchant agreement before calculating margins. See Square’s U.S. fee table and its online-store pricing page.

The free plan gives you a Square-branded subdomain. According to Square’s domain support documentation, connecting a custom domain requires Square Online Plus or Premium. Real-time carrier shipping rates are also listed for Premium rather than Free, although pickup and local delivery are available on Free.

Square setup path

  1. Create or sign in to a Square account.
  2. Open Dashboard → Channels → Square Online.
  3. Add or synchronize products.
  4. Configure pickup, shipping, or local delivery.
  5. Configure taxes, checkout, and the site design.
  6. Choose the free square.site address, or connect a custom domain if you upgrade.
  7. Publish the site and test an order.

Square documents this workflow in its Square Online setup guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Square if…

  • You already use Square at a physical store, market stall, or event.
  • You need an unlimited catalog without paying a monthly fee.
  • You want local pickup or delivery.
  • You can start with a platform subdomain.

Square is less suitable for a creator selling memberships, courses, or sophisticated digital downloads. It is also less attractive if processor flexibility or an immediately custom-branded domain is essential.

2. Shift4Shop: best full-featured $0 option for U.S. merchants

Best for: U.S. businesses that want more traditional ecommerce depth without a monthly software charge.

Shift4Shop’s End-to-End Ecommerce plan is listed at $0 per month. The plan includes unlimited products, orders, bandwidth, and staff users, along with all features, secure hosting, API access, a built-in blog, shopping cart, domain registration, and 24/7 technical support.

That makes Shift4Shop the strongest choice in this list for a merchant who needs a serious catalog, product variants, promotions, SEO, shipping, order management, and integrations. It is closer to a conventional full ecommerce platform than to a simple creator storefront.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important condition: Shift4 Payments

The free plan is available to U.S. merchants only and requires Shift4 Payments. This is not a processor-neutral free plan. If you decline Shift4 Payments or need to use another payment provider, you should not assume that the $0 plan applies.

Shift4Shop lists pre-approved card processing at 2.9% + $0.30. The plan page says there is no additional transaction fee, but payment processing still costs money. Review the U.S. plan terms and Shift4’s payment information before moving an established store.

Payment approval, reserves, payout timing, refunds, prohibited-business rules, and account verification can affect your cash flow. Apply for or activate the payment account and test payouts before importing a large catalog or migrating from another platform.

Choose Shift4Shop if…

  • Your business is based in the United States.
  • You accept Shift4 Payments and have reviewed its merchant terms.
  • You need more ecommerce features than a lightweight builder provides.
  • You want unlimited staff, products, orders, and bandwidth at no monthly platform cost.

Shift4Shop may be more complicated than a beginner needs. Its value depends on accepting the payment-provider arrangement; it should not be described simply as free ecommerce for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Freewebstore: best for an unlimited catalog on a free plan

Best for: Sellers with many products who would rather pay a fee per sale than a recurring monthly subscription.

Freewebstore advertises its Community plan as free forever. It includes hosting, SSL, unlimited products, storage, and bandwidth. This makes it one of the better options when the number of listings matters more than advanced retail operations.

The trade-off is a 2.5% platform fee on every sale, in addition to the fee charged by your payment provider. On a $50 order, Freewebstore’s platform charge alone is $1.25. At $1,000 in monthly sales, that is $25 before Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay, shipping, taxes, refunds, or chargebacks.

The Community plan retains Freewebstore branding and excludes several higher-level features, including customer accounts and wishlists, discount codes and promotions, newsletters, marketplace selling, and unlimited product variations. Thus, unlimited products does not mean unlimited free functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freewebstore says it supports Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay, and other payment methods, but the actual gateway choices depend on location and eligibility. Its FAQ says an existing domain can be connected on every plan, although you may need to purchase that domain separately. The paid Pro plan advertises a free professional domain forever; do not confuse that offer with a free domain on Community.

Freewebstore setup path

  1. Create a free account and choose a theme.
  2. Add products and store information.
  3. Use Manage → Pages for policies, contact information, and other content.
  4. Use Orders → Payment Gateways to connect an available payment provider.
  5. Use Manage → Shipping to configure regions and rates.
  6. Review the branding and 2.5% platform fee before publishing.

See the provider’s getting-started guide, plan details, and FAQ.

Choose Freewebstore if…

  • You need more than five or ten listings but have modest sales volume.
  • Hosting and SSL included at no monthly cost are important.
  • You can tolerate platform branding.
  • A 2.5% platform fee is cheaper than a paid subscription for your expected sales.

At higher sales volumes, calculate whether a paid plan with a lower effective fee would cost less. Also verify variations, customer accounts, export, marketing, and marketplace requirements before committing.

4. Payhip: best for digital products and creators

Best for: Ebooks, templates, music, video, software downloads, courses, memberships, bundles, coaching, and other creator-led businesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payhip’s Free Forever plan costs $0 per month and includes all features, unlimited products, and unlimited revenue. It supports digital and physical products, courses, memberships, and coaching through a store builder with customizable colors, fonts, sections, navigation, and custom pages.

For a digital creator, Payhip is usually a better fit than a general retail builder because the product and storefront model is designed around downloadable and creator content. For physical products, you can configure shipping settings, but a warehouse-heavy or multi-location retailer may outgrow Payhip sooner than Square or Shift4Shop.

Payhip’s 5% fee

The Free Forever plan charges a 5% Payhip transaction fee on each sale. Stripe or PayPal processing fees are added separately. For example, on a $50 order, the Payhip fee is $2.50. If Stripe also charged an illustrative 2.9% + $0.30, the combined platform-and-processing cost would be about $4.25 before taxes, refunds, currency conversion, or other adjustments.

Payhip allows a custom domain connection, but the domain must be purchased separately. Its current U.S. sales-tax policy says Payhip handles U.S. sales-tax collection and remittance as a marketplace facilitator beginning July 1, 2026. That does not necessarily eliminate registration, reporting, or filing duties—particularly in states where the seller has a physical presence. Read Payhip’s tax guidance rather than treating marketplace collection as a complete tax solution.

Payhip setup path

  1. Open the Product Dashboard and select Add new product.
  2. Choose a physical or digital product type.
  3. Set the price, product details, delivery settings, or shipping.
  4. Open Store → Launch Your Store Builder to customize the storefront.
  5. Connect Stripe or PayPal.
  6. Connect a separately purchased domain if needed.
  7. Test checkout with a test transaction or coupon before launch.

Payhip documents product setup in its guides for physical products, the store builder, shipping, and custom domains.

Choose Payhip if…

  • Your primary product is digital.
  • You need memberships, courses, bundles, or coaching.
  • You want unlimited products and revenue without a monthly plan.
  • You accept that 5% of each order goes to Payhip in addition to payment processing.

Payhip is not the first choice for a retailer that needs sophisticated inventory synchronization, multiple warehouses, advanced carrier shipping, or extensive marketplace integrations.

5. Big Cartel: best for artists with five or fewer products

Best for: Artists, makers, jewelry designers, print sellers, apparel creators, and small shops with a tightly curated catalog.

Big Cartel’s Gold plan costs $0 per month and does not require a credit card. It permits five product listings and includes online selling, card and PayPal checkout, size and color variants, sales-tax automation, real-time stats, and one customizable template.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Big Cartel does not charge its own transaction fee. Stripe or PayPal charge their processing fees directly. This can make Big Cartel cheaper per order than Payhip or Freewebstore, but only if five listings are enough and you do not need paid-plan tools.

Gold plan limitations

  • Only five product listings.
  • One displayed image per product.
  • One template.
  • No custom domain on the free plan.
  • Digital products, discounts, inventory tracking, shipping-label features, and broader customization require a paid plan.

The five-product limit concerns listings, not necessarily five individual units or five variants. However, hidden products can still count toward the limit, so do not assume that hiding a listing creates another free slot. Big Cartel explains its plan boundaries in its premium-feature guide and product-import documentation.

One image per listing is also more restrictive than it sounds. If shoppers need front, back, detail, size, or color photos, the free plan may make the store less persuasive. The first or only displayed image therefore matters.

Big Cartel setup path

  1. Sign up for Gold.
  2. Add no more than five listings.
  3. Open Shop Settings → Payments and connect Stripe, PayPal, or both.
  4. Open Shop Settings → Shipping and add shipping rates.
  5. Put the strongest product photo first.
  6. Publish and test checkout.

Use Big Cartel’s launch guide and FAQ for the current workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Big Cartel if…

  • You have five or fewer core products.
  • You want a simple, visually focused storefront.
  • You are an artist or maker selling limited releases.
  • You do not need a custom domain, discounts, advanced shipping, or detailed inventory tools yet.

Big Cartel Gold is not a sensible free plan for a large catalog, wholesale operation, complex product configuration, or business that needs multiple product images.

6. Odoo Online: best for ecommerce plus business management

Best for: Technically confident businesses that want ecommerce connected to sales, invoicing, inventory, CRM, accounting, or other business processes.

Odoo’s One App Free plan costs $0, includes unlimited users, and runs on hosted Odoo Online. Odoo says that when ecommerce requires dependent apps such as Website and Invoicing, those required dependencies are included for free. Customers placing orders are treated as external users rather than paid backend users.

The critical limitation is the one-app boundary. Installing additional applications can move the database to a paid plan. A merchant may begin with ecommerce at $0, then discover that inventory, CRM, accounting, email marketing, or another operational requirement changes the bill. Before adding an app, check whether it is included as a required dependency or counts as an additional application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Odoo provides hosting, maintenance, backups, and infrastructure through Odoo Online. Its documentation also describes a one-year custom-domain offer for eligible Odoo Online databases, including One App Free plans. The domain is not necessarily free forever; plan for renewal costs and check the current domain rules.

Choose Odoo if…

  • Ecommerce is only one part of a larger business system.
  • You are comfortable with a more involved administration interface.
  • You can keep the database within the one-app model.
  • You value unlimited users and future operational integration more than the easiest possible setup.

Odoo is substantially more complex than Big Cartel, Payhip, or Square. It is a poor default recommendation for a solo seller who simply needs a product page and checkout.

Best free builder by business type

If you are… Start with… Why
A local retailer, restaurant, or pop-up seller Square Online Online and in-person catalog, inventory, pickup, and local delivery work together.
A U.S. merchant needing advanced ecommerce tools Shift4Shop Deep hosted-store features with no monthly platform charge, provided you use Shift4 Payments.
Selling many products with low or uncertain sales volume Freewebstore Unlimited products, hosting, SSL, storage, and bandwidth; evaluate the 2.5% sale fee.
Selling downloads, courses, memberships, or coaching Payhip Unlimited products and revenue plus creator-oriented digital and recurring-product features.
An artist with five or fewer listings Big Cartel Simple free storefront with variants and no Big Cartel transaction fee.
Building toward CRM, accounting, inventory, or invoicing Odoo Online Ecommerce can be the starting application in a broader hosted business system.
A WordPress owner who wants maximum control WooCommerce Free open-source software, but hosting, domain, maintenance, and extensions are separate.

What does a free store really cost?

Use this formula when comparing plans:

Total monthly cost = platform subscription + platform transaction fees + payment-processing fees + domain and apps + shipping software + tax tools.

Also account for carrier charges, packaging, chargebacks, refunds, currency-conversion fees, premium themes, advertising, and the eventual cost of migrating to another platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Illustrative $50-order comparison

The following examples use the published rates in the dossier and are not universal quotes. Processor rates vary by country, card type, account, and payment method.

Platform Platform fee on a $50 order Illustrative processing treatment
Square Free None beyond processing About $1.95 at 3.3% + $0.30; about $1.75 at 2.9% + $0.30. Confirm your account rate.
Shift4Shop $0 About $1.75 at the listed 2.9% + $0.30 Shift4 Payments rate.
Freewebstore $1.25 2.5% platform fee, plus the payment provider’s fee.
Payhip $2.50 5% Payhip fee, plus processor fees; about $4.25 total with an illustrative 2.9% + $0.30 card rate.
Big Cartel $0 Processor fee applies; about $1.75 at an illustrative 2.9% + $0.30 rate.
Odoo One App Free $0 software fee Processor fees and any paid Odoo applications are separate.

For example, if you process twenty $50 orders per month, the illustrative platform and processing costs would be approximately $39 for Square at 3.3% + $0.30, $35 for Shift4Shop at 2.9% + $0.30, $25 in Freewebstore platform fees alone, and $85 for Payhip plus a 2.9% + $0.30 processor rate. These examples exclude tax, shipping, refunds, and other costs.

A percentage fee is particularly important as sales grow. A 5% Payhip fee equals $50 on $1,000 in monthly sales; Freewebstore’s 2.5% platform fee equals $25. At that point, compare the fee against the monthly price of an upgrade or another platform. Order size also matters because fixed per-order fees become a larger percentage of inexpensive orders.

Physical products versus digital products

For physical products

Examine more than the product-page limit. The important questions are:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the store handle local pickup and delivery?
  • Can it calculate parcel shipping based on weight, dimensions, and destination?
  • Does it provide carrier labels?
  • Can inventory synchronize with a physical POS?
  • Are variants, preorders, returns, exchanges, and multiple locations supported?
  • Can staff access orders without sharing one login?

Square Online is the strongest general starting point for a local or omnichannel seller because of its POS, inventory, pickup, and delivery connections. Shift4Shop is stronger when the business needs a broader ecommerce feature set. Freewebstore works well for a large catalog if the 2.5% fee and feature restrictions are acceptable.

Payhip supports physical products and shipping settings, but it is primarily creator-oriented. Big Cartel is appropriate for a small collection, not a growing retail catalog. Odoo can become powerful when connected to business operations, but that power comes with complexity and possible paid-app costs.

Be careful with flat-rate shipping. If weight, dimensions, destination, or package count varies, a rate that looks simple to customers can create a loss on fulfillment. Configure a real or low-value test order before publishing rates.

For digital products

Look for automatic delivery, manageable file handling, courses and memberships, recurring billing, license-key support where relevant, content protection, refund controls, mailing-list integrations, and appropriate sales-tax or VAT handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payhip is the clear first choice in this group because its free plan is designed for digital products, courses, memberships, bundles, and coaching. Big Cartel puts digital products behind paid-plan features, while Square is less focused on downloads and memberships. Odoo may support a broader workflow, but it is usually excessive for a solo digital creator.

Do not assume that tax automation means every digital-sales obligation disappears. VAT, sales-tax nexus, registrations, returns, exemptions, and sales made outside the platform may require separate action.

Custom domains, branding, and ownership

A platform can offer a free subdomain, allow you to connect a domain you already own, sell you a domain, or include a domain for only an introductory period. These are different promises:

  • Square Online: Free provides a square.site subdomain. A custom domain requires Plus or Premium.
  • Shift4Shop: The U.S. End-to-End plan lists domain registration, but confirm current registration, ownership, and renewal terms.
  • Freewebstore: Its FAQ says an existing domain can be connected on every plan. You may still have to buy the domain separately, and the free plan retains platform branding.
  • Payhip: You can connect a custom domain, but you purchase the domain separately.
  • Big Cartel: Custom domains are paid-plan functionality.
  • Odoo: Eligible Odoo Online databases may receive a one-year custom-domain offer; renewal planning is still necessary.

A platform-branded address or footer may be acceptable while testing demand. It can be less appropriate once customers need to trust a business, remember its address, or recognize consistent branding across email, social media, and packaging.

Taxes and payment processing need separate attention

Tax calculation, tax collection, tax remittance, and your own registration or filing obligations are not the same thing.

Payhip says it handles U.S. sales-tax collection and payment as a marketplace facilitator beginning July 1, 2026, but sellers with a physical presence in a state may still have filing obligations. Big Cartel advertises sales-tax automation, but automation does not automatically solve every registration, local filing, exemption, or non-platform-sales issue. Square, Freewebstore, Shift4Shop, and Odoo provide tax configuration or related tools, but the merchant remains responsible for understanding applicable rules and verifying the setup.

Likewise, a platform’s claim of no transaction fee does not mean payment processing is free:

  • Big Cartel charges no Big Cartel transaction fee, but Stripe or PayPal charges processing fees.
  • Payhip charges 5% and then Stripe or PayPal charges its fee.
  • Freewebstore charges 2.5% and then the payment provider charges its fee.
  • Shift4Shop’s $0 plan has no additional platform transaction fee but requires paid Shift4 Payments processing.
  • Square Free charges Square processing fees.
  • Odoo’s software may be $0 under One App Free, but payment providers and paid Odoo apps remain separate.

Processor approval is also a prerequisite, not a detail to handle after launch. Stripe, PayPal, Square, and Shift4 may reject an application, request additional verification, delay a payout, or impose reserves. New, unusual, international, or high-risk sales patterns can affect access to funds even when the storefront itself is live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the free plan stops being a good deal

Plan an upgrade or migration when you encounter one of these triggers:

  • You need more than five products or more product images.
  • You want a custom domain and removal of platform branding.
  • Shipping requires real-time carrier rates, labels, calculated package costs, or multiple fulfillment rules.
  • You need abandoned-cart emails, customer accounts, wishlists, discounts, or advanced marketing.
  • Inventory must synchronize across stores, warehouses, marketplaces, or multiple sales channels.
  • You need more staff accounts, multiple currencies, subscriptions, or wholesale pricing.
  • Sales volume makes platform transaction fees more expensive than a paid subscription.
  • You need stronger analytics, customer segmentation, tax tools, or integrations.
  • The platform cannot export the data you need to move later.

Before choosing a free hosted builder, check whether you can export products, SKUs, variants, images, customers, orders, discounts, blog content, SEO metadata, and redirects. Hosted platforms are easier to operate, but they do not all provide the same portability.

How to launch without an expensive mistake

  1. Approve payments first. Confirm that Stripe, PayPal, Square, or Shift4 accepts your business and product category.
  2. Choose the catalog model. Count listings, variants, images, digital files, memberships, and hidden products—not just the number of physical items.
  3. Price shipping with real package information. Test the destinations you actually serve instead of guessing from a single flat rate.
  4. Configure tax settings deliberately. Determine who calculates, collects, remits, and files before taking orders.
  5. Decide whether a platform URL is acceptable. If not, include the domain price or paid-plan cost in your budget.
  6. Run a complete test order. Test payment authorization, confirmation email, inventory reduction, tax, shipping, pickup, digital delivery, refunds, and mobile checkout.
  7. Record the exit plan. Save product images and data and confirm how orders and customer records can be exported.
  8. Review fees at your expected sales volume. A free monthly plan can be more expensive than a subscription once per-order fees accumulate.

Free alternatives that are not in the six

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is free, open-source ecommerce software for a self-hosted WordPress site. It is a strong choice for technically capable users who value ownership and customization, but it is not a zero-cost hosted website builder. You normally pay for hosting, a domain, backups, security, maintenance, and possibly paid extensions. Read WooCommerce’s FAQ with that distinction in mind.

PrestaShop

PrestaShop can also be free open-source software. Hosting, domain registration, maintenance, themes, modules, and payment services remain separate costs, so it belongs in the free-software category rather than beside hosted $0 plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopify

Shopify offers a free trial and introductory pricing options, but its current pricing page does not present a permanent free hosted ecommerce plan. A trial is not a free-forever store.

Wix and Squarespace

Free website plans from general website builders do not necessarily include ecommerce checkout. Verify the target country and current plan before assuming that a free website can accept orders.

Ecwid

Do not rely on older articles that describe a free Ecwid plan. Ecwid’s current plan documentation identifies four paid plans, and its pricing page lists Starter as paid. A current secondary review from Fit Small Business reports that new free sign-ups ended in March 2025 and legacy free storefronts were retired in November 2025. Treat older claims about ten free products as outdated unless Ecwid publishes contrary current information.

Common failure modes

The provider changes the free plan

Free plans can be discontinued, restricted by country, limited to new accounts, or changed into paid plans. Check the provider’s live pricing and terms before investing heavily in a store. Export critical data regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A payment account is rejected or funds are held

A functioning storefront does not guarantee payment approval or immediate payouts. Complete verification early, read reserve and payout terms, and keep enough cash to cover a delay.

A custom-domain promise is misunderstood

Connecting a domain you already own is not the same as receiving a free domain. A platform subdomain is not a custom domain, and a first-year domain offer does not guarantee free renewal.

Shipping is underpriced

Manual flat-rate shipping can lose money when package dimensions, weight, destination, or order quantity changes. Test several realistic carts before advertising nationwide shipping.

A product limit is counted differently than expected

Limits may count listings, variants, hidden products, or imported products differently. Big Cartel, for example, states that hidden products still count toward the plan limit. Check the provider’s exact definition before designing a catalog around the maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax automation is treated as tax compliance

Automated calculation or marketplace collection does not necessarily handle business registration, local returns, zero-dollar filings, exemptions, non-marketplace sales, or sales outside the platform. Consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.

The store cannot be migrated easily

Before launch, verify export support for products, SKUs, variants, images, customers, orders, discounts, blog content, SEO metadata, and redirects. A low-cost start is less useful if moving later requires rebuilding every page and order record.

Final recommendation

Start with Square Online if you want the simplest broad-purpose store, especially alongside a physical business. Start with Shift4Shop if you are a U.S. merchant willing to use Shift4 Payments and need more complete ecommerce functionality. Choose Payhip for a digital-first business, Big Cartel only when five listings are enough, and Freewebstore when catalog size matters more than branding and its 2.5% platform fee is acceptable. Choose Odoo Online when the store is the beginning of a broader business-management system—not merely because it has a $0 entry plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these ecommerce builders really free forever?

They offer a $0 monthly plan or advertise a free-forever plan as of August 10, 2026, but the conditions differ. Shift4Shop’s free plan is limited to eligible U.S. merchants using Shift4 Payments. Payhip and Freewebstore charge fees on sales, Big Cartel limits the free plan to five listings, and Odoo’s free plan is limited to one application. Check live pricing before committing because free plans can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which free ecommerce builder is best for digital products?

Payhip is the best fit for most creators selling downloads, courses, memberships, bundles, or coaching. Its Free Forever plan has unlimited products and revenue, but Payhip charges 5% per transaction in addition to Stripe or PayPal fees.

Can I use my own domain on a free ecommerce store?

It depends on the platform. Square Free provides a square.site subdomain and requires a paid plan for a custom domain. Big Cartel requires a paid plan. Payhip can connect a separately purchased domain, Freewebstore says existing domains can be connected on every plan, Shift4Shop lists domain registration on its U.S. free plan, and Odoo may provide an eligible one-year domain offer.

Do free ecommerce platforms handle sales tax for me?

Not completely. Payhip says it handles U.S. sales-tax collection and remittance as a marketplace facilitator beginning July 1, 2026, while Big Cartel offers sales-tax automation. Sellers may still need registrations, filings, returns, exemption handling, or reporting for sales outside the platform. Is WooCommerce a free ecommerce website builder?

WooCommerce is free, open-source ecommerce software, but it normally runs on self-hosted WordPress. You still need hosting, a domain, backups, security, maintenance, and possibly paid extensions. That makes it a free-software alternative rather than a completely free hosted store.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Square Online. Best feature depth at $0 monthly: Shift4Shop for eligible U.S. merchants using Shift4 Payments. Best for digital creators: Payhip. Best for five or fewer products: Big Cartel. Best for an unlimited catalog: Freewebstore. Best for a broader business system: Odoo Online. Compare the per-sale fees, domain rules, payment requirements, catalog limits, and upgrade triggers—not just the $0 headline.
