The six options below cover page design, manual redirects, 404 monitoring, a global fallback, and hosted automatic matching—not six interchangeable tools.
What a WordPress 404 plugin can—and cannot—fix
A 404 Not Found error means the requested URL did not resolve to a page. A deleted page, changed slug or permalink, site migration, stale internal link, or rewrite-configuration problem can cause one. The plugin is only part of the fix: first identify whether the URL should point to an existing page, a replacement, or remain unavailable.
These plugins serve three distinct purposes:
- Custom 404 page: replaces the default error screen with navigation, search, or other helpful content. It changes what visitors see but does not repair a broken URL.
- Redirect management: sends a known old URL to its closest relevant live replacement. This is useful after a slug change, content removal, permalink change, or migration.
- 404 logging or matching: records missing requests for review, or attempts to find a destination automatically. A log helps you decide whether to fix an internal link or add a redirect; it does not by itself correct the underlying link.
WPBeginner’s January 8, 2026 comparison is titled “5 Best Free 404 Page Plugins for WordPress (2026),” while its quick-pick table lists seven products and includes paid pricing for some. 1. Redirection: best all-round free redirect and 404-log plugin
Redirection’s WordPress.org listing describes a free redirect manager that also records 404 errors. It is a good starting point if you need to handle known URL changes and review unexpected missing URLs in one plugin.

Documented features include regular-expression and conditional redirects, query-parameter handling, automatic redirects when post or page permalinks change, searchable and filterable logs, bulk handling of logged errors, and import/export in CSV, JSON, Apache .htaccess, and Nginx formats. The directory says the plugin has no premium version and lists PHP compatibility from 7.4 to 8.5.
Before an installation or update, check the current support and development information and test on a staging site where possible. The listing included user reports from August 2026 describing problems on WordPress 7.1; those are reports, not a confirmed compatibility finding.

2. 404 to 301: best for a focused redirect-and-monitor workflow
404 to 301’s WordPress.org listing documents 301, 302, and 307 redirects; exact, prefix, and regex matching; configurable fallback redirects; and a 404 log with request and referrer data, filtering, and bulk actions. It can also create redirects automatically after permalink changes. Its logging controls include IP masking and path exclusions.
At the time of the 2026 research, the directory listed version 4.0.4, 100,000+ active installations, WordPress 6.4 or higher, and testing through WordPress 7.1.2. These are listing details at that time, not a promise that it will work with every hosting stack or plugin combination. The listing describes the redirect features above as free.

3. Safe Redirect Manager: best for restrained, extensible redirect rules
Safe Redirect Manager is a focused choice for site owners or developers who want manageable redirect rules rather than a full 404-investigation workflow. Its WordPress.org description says rules are stored as custom post types and can be extended with actions and filters. It supports wildcard and regular-expression replacements, and rules can return 403, 410, or 404 behavior.
The documented default maximum is 1,000 redirects, with a filter available to raise it. The plugin’s official guidance is: “Browsers heavily cache 301 (permanently moved) redirects. It’s recommended to test your permanent redirects using the 302 (temporarily moved) status code before changing them to 301 permanently moved.”

4. Auto Redirect 404 to Custom URL: best for a single fallback
Auto Redirect 404 to Custom URL does one narrow job: it sends every 404 to a configured URL or the homepage. Its FAQ says it cannot send different missing URLs to different destinations.
That limitation matters. A request for a removed product, an old article, and a mistyped address may need different outcomes. Sending all of them to the homepage can leave visitors without a relevant replacement. Choose this plugin only if one global fallback is genuinely what you want, not as a substitute for reviewing individual redirect mappings.

5. no404 – Auto 404 Redirect: best for hosted automatic matching
no404 – Auto 404 Redirect uses a hosted matching service rather than relying only on local redirect rules. The WordPress.org listing requires an account and API key and states that its free plan allows 1,000 lookups per month. It documents local one-hour result caching, a configurable 301 or 302 choice, and fallback to the theme’s normal 404 page if the service fails.
Review the listing’s current privacy disclosure and your site’s obligations before enabling the service. It says the service receives the missing path, optional referrer, truncated IP/network information, a pseudonymous visitor identifier, user agent, and some installation or account identifiers. It also says query strings, cookies, session data, and full visitor IP addresses are not sent. The hosted dependency and stated quota distinguish this option from plugins that manage redirect rules locally.
6. SeedProd: best for building a custom 404 page
SeedProd is a page-builder option for changing the experience visitors see when a page is missing. WPBeginner’s 2026 quick-pick table lists it for custom 404-page creation and reports a free tier alongside paid pricing, while noting that some features are not available free. That means “free plugin” does not establish that the specific 404-page feature you want is included at no charge.
Check SeedProd’s current plan and feature details before choosing it. If your main problem is broken links that need individual destinations or a log to investigate, a page builder alone is not a redirect manager or 404 logger.

How to pick the right plugin for your 404 errors
- Want to track 404 pages and manage redirects? Start with Redirection for broad controls or 404 to 301 for its combined redirect-and-log workflow.
- Need a small, controlled set of rules? Consider Safe Redirect Manager, especially if custom-post-type storage and extension hooks fit your workflow.
- Only need one fallback? Auto Redirect 404 to Custom URL can do that, but it cannot map different missing URLs to different pages.
- Want matching handled by an external service? Assess no404’s account requirement, free-plan quota, data disclosure, and service-failure behavior first.
- Want a better error-page layout? Consider SeedProd, checking that the relevant feature is included in the current free tier. A custom page is not a fix for a stale internal link.
For any option, confirm current WordPress and PHP compatibility, the features available without payment, and whether it logs visitor or request information. The desired level of visibility matters too: check whether a candidate records the missing URL, referrer, request metadata, status, or hits, and whether those records can be filtered or exported.

Fix a 404 without creating a worse redirect
- Identify the cause. Determine whether the page was deleted, moved, renamed, missed during migration, or is affected by a broken internal link or rewrite configuration.
- Choose the correct destination. If a URL moved, redirect it to the closest relevant live replacement. If the content has no suitable replacement, do not force unrelated URLs to the homepage just to make the error disappear.
- Test a permanent redirect safely. A 301 means permanently moved and can be cached by browsers. Safe Redirect Manager recommends testing a proposed permanent mapping with a 302 first, then changing it to 301 once the destination is confirmed.
- Review logged requests. Use a 404 log to find recurring missing paths and referrers. Fix your own broken internal links where possible; add a redirect when a useful replacement exists.
- Recheck the result and the plugin’s current compatibility information. A rule can behave differently alongside other plugins, host configuration, or WordPress updates, so test the actual URLs on your site.
