The best app for learning a new skill depends on what you want to learn and how you need to practice. Duolingo focuses on language lessons, Skillshare on creative classes, LinkedIn Learning on career skills, Coursera on courses and credentials, Yousician on music, and Mimo on coding. This is a category-based shortlist, not a tested ranking: choose the app that fits your goal, then check its current price, free access, and feature availability before signing up.

How to choose an app for learning a skill

Start with the skill, not the app’s overall reputation. Practicing a language, learning a design technique, and studying for a professional credential are different tasks; an app designed around one format may not suit another. Consider what practice the skill requires, whether you need a structured course or short sessions, and whether you need a credential or simply want to build ability.

The apps below cover distinct categories. Apple’s App Store editorial groups examples across languages, coding, career learning, creative work, and music, but it does not compare their teaching effectiveness. No comparative outcome or completion data is available here, so app use or course completion should not be treated as proof of mastery.

Six apps for different learning goals

Duolingo for language learning

Duolingo describes short, game-like lessons with points, levels, challenges, reminders, and feedback. That format makes it a candidate for learners who want a regular, structured language-learning habit. These features do not establish that using the app alone will lead to fluency.

Skillshare for creative skills

Skillshare offers on-demand classes in creative subjects including design, art, photography, filmmaking, cooking, marketing, crafts, and music. Its learning paths are intended to guide learners toward goals. It may suit someone who wants to explore a creative topic through classes rather than follow a career-focused course catalog.

Skillshare’s pricing page lists an annual plan billed at $167.88 USD, displayed as $13.99 per month when billed annually. That is an annual billing commitment, not a month-to-month price. Confirm the current offer, billing terms, and any free access on the Skillshare pricing page before subscribing, since prices and plan details can change.

LinkedIn Learning for career and professional skills

LinkedIn Learning groups courses into business, technology, and creative areas. Its learning paths combine courses around a broader topic; the platform also describes career goals, quizzes, exercise files, and virtual coding environments. These practice resources make it worth considering when you want a guided route through a professional subject rather than a collection of unrelated lessons.

Coursera for structured courses and credentials

Apple’s App Store editorial categorizes Coursera around courses, certificates, and degrees. That makes it a category to explore if you are looking for structured study or a credential. The information available here does not establish current prices, which credentials are available, or the precise features in its mobile app; check the specific course or program before enrolling.

Yousician for music practice

Apple’s App Store editorial identifies Yousician with lessons for guitar, bass, and singing. Consider it if one of those is your learning goal, but verify the current lesson offering, price, and relevant features before choosing. Mimo for coding

Apple’s App Store editorial lists Mimo for learning Python, HTML, and JavaScript. It is a starting point to investigate if you want an app in the coding category. What to verify before you subscribe

  • Price and free access: Check the app’s current subscription terms, trial or free options, and renewal conditions. The Skillshare price above is the only specific price verified here.
  • Fit for your goal: Look at the actual lesson or course outline to see whether it covers the skill and level you need.
  • Practice format: Decide whether you need short lessons, guided paths, exercises, or another kind of practice. Features differ by app and skill.
  • Credential relevance: If you need a certificate or degree for work or study, verify the exact credential and whether it meets the requirements of the organization that matters to you.
  • Device and regional availability: Confirm that the app, course, and any features you need are available for your device and region.

These checks matter because the six apps are not interchangeable course libraries, and the available information does not provide a complete current comparison of prices, credentials, or regional availability.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
