Choose the skill you need next, then verify the provider’s current access and certificate terms before enrolling.

Abid Ali Awan’s KDnuggets roundup groups 50 learning resources into ten areas. Its breadth makes it useful for finding a starting point or filling a specific gap; it is not a syllabus that every learner needs to complete from beginning to end.

How to choose a course that fits your next step
Start with the task you want to be able to do, rather than the largest or most advanced-sounding topic. A sensible progression for a new learner is programming and data handling, followed by analysis, then a specialization such as machine learning or data engineering. If you already have a foundation, skip ahead to the skill gap you have identified.

- Ready to model data: take a machine-learning course after you are comfortable with Python and basic analysis; choose deep learning or generative AI only when those are the specific skills you need.
- Already building models: MLOps resources address the operational side of putting machine-learning systems into use.
Before committing, compare the course’s stated learning outcome, prerequisites, hands-on work, provider and last-updated information, what remains accessible without payment, and whether a certificate costs extra. The roundup’s topic labels help narrow the search, but those course-level details must be checked on the provider’s own page.
What “free” can mean on course platforms
Check access separately from certificates
A course can offer free previews or audit access while reserving later lessons, assignments, or a completion certificate for paid learners. Coursera’s current course listing describes previews of the first module for many courses, seven-day trials for eligible programs, and paid upgrades or financial aid for continued access and certificates. These terms are not universal: check the individual course’s enrollment page for what is available to you before starting.

Use official free options as a cross-check
Harvard’s CS50x 2026 course page says people who are not Harvard students may take its OpenCourseWare course for free by working through eleven weeks of material. Its topic list includes Python and SQL. The page states: “Even if you are not a student at Harvard, you are welcome to ‘take’ this course for free via this OpenCourseWare by working your way through the course’s eleven weeks of material.”
Harvard Online’s data science listings identify examples such as Data Science: R Basics and Data Science: Productivity Tools as offering free audit learning, with certificates as a separate option. Read each course listing for the exact audit and certificate terms; free learning access should not be taken to mean a free certificate.

A practical way to use the list
- Pick one target skill. Choose Python, SQL, analytics, BI, data engineering, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, or MLOps based on what you need to learn next.
- Open the provider’s current course page. Confirm that the course still exists and that its content matches the roundup’s description.
- Read the access terms before enrolling. Identify which lessons and assignments are free, whether a trial is involved, and what happens when it ends.
- Decide whether the certificate matters to you. Check whether it is offered and its current price; do not assume it is included with free learning access.
- Choose one course and work through it. A completed course that builds the skill you need is more useful than collecting enrollment links across all 50 topics.
